CR73371 608917337129 CD CHALLENGE RECORDS £7.99 JAZZ

On ‘Interview’ the Dutch saxophonist Bart Wirtz teams up with leading American trumpeter Sean Jones (the orchestra of Wynton Marsalis, the Marcus Miller band). One of the finest young saxophonists in Europe today, Bart Wirtz has a flexible and versatile style that ranges from hard bop to freer explorations. A logical extension of such giants as Jackie McLean, Frank Morgan and Art Pepper among others, Wirtz has his own sound and open-minded approach to playing jazz. Wirtz has won several awards, including the Erasmus Jazz Prize, the Leiden Jazz Award and the Breda Jazz Prize. In November 2012 he won the Edison Jazzism Audiance Award for his previous album ‘iDreamer’. Batik Headland

CR73383 608917338324 CD CHALLENGE RECORDS £7.99 JAZZ

Batik is a group that originated from the duo which drummer Joost Lijbaart and pianist (and ECM recording artist) Wolfert Brederode started in 2005. Significant to the group sound is the blending of music into one sound, the instruments itself are subordinate to the whole. The music is inspired by the work of the artist Claudy Jongstra, who creates art pieces and architectural installations from hand felted material. Batik fuses an emphasis on joint improvisation together with these other contemporary influences to create unique jazz soundscapes. Personnel: Joost Lijbaart (drums, percussion), Wolfert Brederode (piano), Ed Verhoeff (electric & acoustic guitars), Mark Haanstra (bass guitar)

Tracks: Neon / Intertwined / Headlands / Arch / Dharma / Glow / Lady Y / Cirrus / If you hear me talking to myself... / Menado / Headland

Matt Wilson Quartet & John Medeski

Gathering Call

PM2169 753957216696 CD PALMETTO RECORDS £7.99 JAZZ For ‘Gathering Call’ the Matt Wilson Quartet is joined by a special guest - keyboard star of Medeski Martin & Wood, John Medeski. They have created an irresistibly tune-rich, hard-grooving album steeped in the vintage virtues even as it sounds utterly fresh. Matt Wilson is renowned for his virtuosic flair as a drummer and his good-vibes positivity as a bandleader, not to mention his facility for collaborating with top musicians across the spectrum of jazz - from the mainstream to the avant-garde and virtually everything in between. ‘Gathering Call’ features a brace of Wilson originals that range from the raucous, drum-driven title track and Ornette-accented “How Ya Goin?” to the atmospheric “Dancing Waters” and elliptically lyrical “Hope (for the Cause)”. The interpretive numbers include versions of two Duke Ellington compositions (including the rarely covered “You Dirty Dog”) and uncommon tunes by Charlie Rouse, Butch Warren and Hugh Lawson, plus the Beyonce song “If I Were A Boy.” Personnel: Matt Wilson (drums), John Medeski (piano), Jeff Lederer (tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, clarinet), Kirk Knuffke (cornet), Chris Lightcap (bass)

John Hammond Timeless

PM2170 753957217020 CD PALMETTO RECORDS £7.99 BLUES

With a career that spans over three decades, John Hammond is one of a handful of blues musicians who was on the scene at the beginning of the first blues renaissance of the mid-60s. Some critics have described Hammond as a white Robert Johnson, and Hammond does justice to classic blues by combining powerful guitar and harmonica playing with expressive vocals and a dignified stage presence. ‘Timeless’ is a live record of blues tunes hand picked by John himself. Although he’s a multi-dimensional artist, one thing Hammond has never professed to be is a songwriter. In the early years of his career, it was more important to him that he bring the art form to a wider audience by performing classic - in some cases forgotten - songs. Now, more than 30 years later, Hammond continues to do this, touring all over the US, Canada and Europe from his base in northern New Jersey.

Tracks: No One Can Forgive Me But My Baby (tom Waits) / Heartache Blues / Going Away Baby (james Lane) / Further On Up The Road (joe Medwick) / Looking For Trouble (eddie Taylor) / Tell Me Mama (walter Jacobs) / Last Night (walter Jacobs) / That Nasty Swing (cliff Carlisle) / Drop Down Mama (sleepy John Estes) / Hard Times (skip James) / Jockey Full Of Bourbon (tom Waits) / Tell Me (chester Burnett) / Junco Partner (trad. Blues Song) / The Sky Is Crying (elmore James) / No Money Down (chuck Berry)

ROCK/JAZZ NEW RELEASE - 21/7/2014

Silence Blossoms Silence Blossoms

FP016 5052442005704 CD EFPI RECORDS £7.99 ROCK/JAZZ

Debut album from Anglo-Swedish group Silence Blossoms combining contemporary and original poetry with folk-inspired melodies and bringing both into an improvised music soundworld. They have been described as playing “haunted and corrupted modern folk laments, possessed of a gelid Baltic beauty” by MOJO (in a 4 star review) and “a perfect blend of sweet harmony and art noise” by The Ring Modulator blog. Silence Blossoms are Sam Andreae (composition, tenor saxophone, voice, guitar, electronics), Gus Loxbo (double bass, guitar, voice, saw) and Hanna Olivegren (voice, synthesizer). Using poetry as a starting point for their pieces, the group incorporates text and melody into an improvised music setting, keeping the sensibilities that make improvisation such an exciting format for expression while introducing structure and familiar shapes through the use of song, harmony and melody. Andreae’s folkish compositions anchor the music and give the group space to restlessly explore contrasting themes of darkness, light, aggression, fragility, pain and joy. Inspired in equal parts by free improvisers and song poets such as Leonard Cohen, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Evan Parker, Derek Bailey, David Sylvian and Otomo Yoshihide, Silence Blossoms draw a line between these distinctly contrasting yet beautifully complementary styles. Strictly limited edition, the CDs are packaged in hand-crafted cardboard cases designed and printed by the artist and designer Angela Guyton.
