SHORT VOWELS: a, e, i, o, u

Y AS A VOWEL: Y is a vowel when it takes the place of -i. It often comes at the end of a word or syllable.long -y = by, my, why. short -y = baby, kitty, pretty.

LONG VOWELS: a - ai, ay, eigh e - ee, ea, ei, ie, ey i - y, igh, ie o - oa, oe, ow u - ue, ew

TWIN VOWELS: ee oo

BLENDS: bl, cr, dr, gr, fl, fr, pr, sl, sn, sp, st, sw, tr

COMBINATION SOUNDS: Two consecutive letters which make a single sound. Also called digraphs.ch, ph, sh, th, wh

FLASH CARDS Instructions

Begin with initial consonants.

Study each picture and then sound out the words on the back of the card.

Each day spend a short period of time reviewing a few cards and introducing a few new ones.

Work with short vowels after initial consonants, then introduce blends.

Blends can be sounded out once you know initial consonant sound well.

Combination sounds can be fun (ch-the chair sound, sh- the she sound, etc.).

Long vowel sounds are more difficult to learn, however, there are various letter combinations

which make those sounds easy to hear.
