Memories

We’re a full month into 2019, but this is my first

opportunity to wish you a Happy New Year!

Welcome (or welcome back) to The Bushnell.

I hope your holidays were full of joy and that lasting memories were created that you’ll cherish for years to come.

Memories are on top of mind right now—maybe because of the iconic song “Memory” from our current production, CATS—but also because The Bushnell is a place where so many memorable things happen. From first dates to weddings, bar mitzvahs to retirement parties, we’re often the location of life events that go beyond a simple night of entertainment.

And of course there are the shows! I can’t remember how many times CATS has been here in Hartford (the last time was over 20 years ago), but each visit gives a new generation a fresh chance to experience this groundbreaking musical. The show’s tagline was once “Now and Forever,” and it does seem that this show, the

first immersion musical that transformed the entire theatre into the world of the play, will keep enchanting audiences forever.

Classics like CATS that keep coming back are not just exercises in nostalgia. Each new production gives the creators a chance to freshen and refocus the material. This is not, as they say, your grandfather’s CATS. A new generation of theatre artists, led by the musical’s original director, Trevor Nunn, have reimagined Andrew Lloyd Webber’s stunning world of Jellicle cats to make this a captivating and all-new 21st century spectacle.

Thank you, as always, for supporting The Bushnell. Here’s to peaceful and productive 2019 filled with happy memories—I hope many of them will include time with us. Sincerely

David R. Fay

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER (Composer) is the composer of some of the world’s best known musicals including CATS, Evita, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Phantom of the Opera (which celebrated its 30th anniversary on Broadway this year) and Sunset Boulevard. When Sunset Boulevard joined School of Rock – The Musical, CATS and Phantom on Broadway in February 2017 he became the only person to equal the record set in 1953 by Rodgers and Hammerstein with four shows running concurrently. As well as The Phantom Of The Opera and CATS his productions include the groundbreaking Bombay Dreams which introduced the double Oscar winning Bollywood composer AR Rahman to the Western stage. As a composer and producer, Lloyd Webber is one of an elite group of artists to have achieved EGOT status by receiving an Emmy, four Grammys including Best Contemporary Classical Composition for Requiem, his setting of the Latin Requiem mass, an Oscar and eight Tony Awards including the 2018 Special Tony for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre. Additionally he has been honored with seven Oliviers, a Golden Globe, the Praemium Imperiale, the Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre, a BASCA Fellowship, and the Kennedy Center Honor. He owns seven London theatres including the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and the London Palladium. He is passionate about the importance of music in education and the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation has become one of Britain’s leading charities supporting the arts and music. In 2016 the Foundation funded a major new national initiative which endowed the American Theatre Wing with a $1.3 million, three-year grant to support theatre education opportunities for underserved young people and public schools across the U.S. He was knighted by Her Majesty The Queen in 1992 and created a life peer in 1997. To mark his 70th birthday, his bestselling autobiography Unmasked was published by HarperCollins in March 2018.

THOMAS STEARNS ELIOT (Poet & Lyricist) was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on September 26, 1888. He was educated at Harvard, the Sorbonne in Paris and Merton College, Oxford. He settled in England in 1915 and taught briefly at two schools before joining Lloyds Bank in the city of London. His first volume of poems, Prufrock and Other Observations, was published in 1917. The Waste Land, his most famous work, was first published in 1922. In 1925 he left the bank to become a director

of the publishing house of Faber. There have been several individual and collected editions of his poetry, as well as volumes of his literary and social criticism; he also wrote a number of verse plays, including Murder in the Cathedral, which was commissioned for the Canterbury Festival of 1935. T.S. Eliot had a great affection for cats, and “Possum” was his alias among his friends. Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats appeared in October 1939 and was the basis for CATS. He received many honors and distinctions, among them the Order of Merit and the Nobel Prize for Literature. Eliot died in January 1965 and was posthumously awarded the 1983 Tony Award for the book of CATS.

TREVOR NUNN (Director) From 1968 to 1986, he was the youngest-ever artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, directing more than 30 productions, from classics to new works including Nicholas Nickleby and Les Misérables. THE BUSHNELL

SERVICESThe Bushnell Box Office The Bushnell Box Office is open Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Sunday beginning at noon (on Bushnell-ticketed performance days only). The Box Office remains open 30 minutes after curtain for all performances. Telephone (860) 987-5900, Fax (860) 987-6080. A telecommunications device for the deaf (TDD/TTY) can be used to communicate with The Bushnell Box Office by calling (860) 987-6097. Tickets, news and information are also available online at www.bushnell.org 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Parking Secure and well-lighted parking is available in the State of Connecticut parking lots along Capitol Avenue. Please be aware that Accessible Parking adjustments have been made due to construction in the area. Please look for prominently displayed signage off of Capitol Avenue that will direct patrons displaying a valid accessible parking permit to spaces. Spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition, valet services are available for most evening and weekend performances (excluding weekday matinees) at a cost of $12 per vehicle. The valet parking service is located on Capitol Avenue. Pursuant to City of Hartford Municipal Code Sec. 10-29 and per order of the Hartford Parking Authority, valet services can no longer be provided from Trinity Street. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Accessibility The Bushnell is equipped with ramps, restrooms, elevators and seating areas that can accommodate patrons with disabilities. When ordering your tickets, be sure to tell the Box Office of any special requirements. Access guides are available at the Customer Relations Desk.

Patron Accessibility Services sponsored by:

Persons who are Hearing-Impaired Infrared (ILS) headsets and neck induction loops are available at the Customer Relations Desk to assist with sound amplification and clarity. A driver’s license or other form of photo ID must be presented.

Behind the Scenes at The Bushnell Bushnell tours are given by appointment. Please call (860) 987-6033 to schedule a tour.

Café Visit our café for a quick bite before the show. The café features soups, salads, sandwiches, pastries and more. The café is open one hour prior to most shows.

In Case of an Emergency Exits are indicated by signs located above the theater entrances. For your safety, please check the location of the exit nearest your seat. In the event of an evacuation, Bushnell staff and volunteers are available to assist you.

Disruptive Behavior Any patron who poses a health or sanitary risk; disturbs other patrons; causes damage to The Bushnell property; or does not cooperate with staff and security personnel will be asked to leave the venue.

Electronic Devices Cellular phones, pagers and other electronic devices should be silenced prior to entering the theater. Text messaging and the use of other devices that cause unnecessary light are prohibited in the theater.

Late Arrival Late seating will be at the discretion of the production company, and requires that late audience members wait to enter the theater until a designated break in the performance. For your convenience, closed circuit televisions are located in the lobbies.

End of Performance For your safety and the safety of your fellow patrons, please do not leave your seat until the house lights have been turned on. Not only is it dark, but it is inconsiderate to others, including the performers.

Children Everyone attending performances at The Bushnell must have a ticket, regardless of age. To ensure optimum enjoyment for all patrons, we recommend that children under 5 only attend shows in the Robinson & Cole Family Series and The Bushnell Children’s Theatre. The Bushnell staff reserves the right to ask any parents/guardians whose children cause disruptions during a performance to leave the theater.

If you have any additional questions or comments regarding Bushnell services, please contact Customer Relations and Patron Feedback at (860) 987-6059.
