supporting urban refugees in Kenya and Uganda. • Our objective is to ensure refugees have access to
quality education • We have education support programmes and
Tamuka computer hubs where refugee get ICT courses for free in both Kenya and Uganda
• In 2014 Xavier Project started the ENEZA learning programme for urban refugees in Nairobi
• 2016, Xavier project will extend the programme in Kenya to Dadaab and Kakuma refugees camps.
• We believe that everyone has the right to equal opportunities and protection wherever they live and whatever their background.
• Globally this right is denied to refugees and we use education to change this.

Kenya is home for multinational refugees • For over 2 decades refugee camps have been in existence in
Kenya with Somali, South-Sudanese, Congolese, Rwandese, Ugandan, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Burundian refugees.
• Education which was regarded as an “emergency” now is “permanent”
• The camps are faced with many challenges including insecurity which paralyses learning
• Urban refugees are also faced with challenges in getting admission in schools, poverty and police harassment.
• Poverty makes it difficult for parents to purchase important text books and revision books for students – this affects both camp and urban refugees
Over 1 Million Refugees are in Uganda and Kenya. Around 200,000 living in urban areas
80% urban refugee income
spent on food and rent
35% of primary age not accessing school
42% in Dadaab refugee camp
Learning continues anywhere anytime
How is this possible?
• The mobile programme is called ENEZA – a Swahili word meaning spread.
• ENEZA is a mobile learning tool accessible to students via SMS
• Any type of mobile phone can access the programme contents
• No internet required • Students can access content of all examinable
subjects taught in class

Teachers are not left behind…
Teachers are intensively trained on how to use their platform Teachers platform can access: • All students content • Teachers refresher training course on pedagogy,
classroom management etc. • Teachers guide content • Assign homework and receive feedback on
students performance and those who did not attempt
Administrator Online Platform
• All data on registered students are automatically uploaded on this platform
• Individualized student activity, time, date and performance can be accessed here
• Inactive and poor performing students can be detected
• Data analysis for all students can also be generated

Monitoring and Evaluation
• Manual data recording from students phones • Online platform • Students feedback questionnaire • Performance tracker from baseline exams at
the start of the programme and exams at the end of the year
Xavier Project-Eneza Education Partnership in 2016 targets: • 680 Urban refugee children in
Nairobi • 1000 in Dadaab Refugees Camp • 500 in Kakuma Refugees Camp • 200 in Turkana West
Advantages
• Cost effective ($1.6) per student per month • No internet required • Learning continues despite teachers strike, insecurity • Student can request academic content from any class
level • Serves as additional learning to what the teacher
taught in class • Boost students performance by 22.7% • Parents can access their children performance • Students gets certificate and transcript upon
completion of individual grade course.
Challenges
• Access to mobile phones despite any phone is acceptable
• Serious community sensitization required for parents to support
• Child will only use the programme at home and after completing school work
• Irrelevant use of parents phones by some students – naught ones never miss
• Pullout due to resettlement, lost mobile phones etc.
Future plans
• Work with phone manufacturers/ mobile network service providers to produce customized phones that can only be use for academic purpose
• Joint online and manual monitoring
