Promoting yourself is the biggest way of getting known in the photographic industry. So how do big organisations promote art and design? How can you promote individual work? This report will be covering those questions as well as successful promoters, trade fairs, individual promoting and unconventional promoting. First I am going to talk about The Saatchi Gallery. The Saatchi Gallery is a big organisation to promote your work, this is an online advertisement and using this online tool you are able to upload your work. Having the option to upload your own work gives you the opportunity to meet other artists who can give you critical opinions and may have the opportunity to gain work experience with other artists. There are many ways to promote your work individually. There are five main points to successfully promote your work, advertising, social networking, physical advertisement, and merchandise and celebrity endorsement. Advertising can consist of TV, radio, magazines and billboards; whilst these techniques can be pricey you can also produce your own logo, business cards, post cards and leaflets which are not. social networking can be a website, Tumblr, Facebook, Instagram, blogger, word press and online forums. The internet is important for advertising and the suggestions are all free and can benefit you a lot as most promoting is done through the internet. physical advertising can be very time consuming but worth it, public demos, workshops, pop up studios, word of mouth and exhibitions. By using this type of promoting tool you can physically show your ‘customers’ or audience to show how you work and what you can produce. Merchandise is a way of promote ‘goods’ like pens, t- shirts, key rings and stickers are good and subtle ways to promote yourself. Celebrity endorsement is one of the biggest ways to raise your profile and can lead you to many different opportunities. Rankin is a very successful self-promoter. Rankin promotes himself using various different techniques. Rankin made his name by published magazines such as ‘dazed’, ‘ranked’ and ‘hunger’. Rankin has published over thirty books and is regularly exhibited in galleries around the world as well as his own London gallery. His museum-scale exhibition ‘show off’ at NRW Dusseldorf in September 2013 pulled in over 30,000 visitors in three months.

Advertising can consist of TV, radio, magazines and billboards; whilst these techniques can be pricey you can also produce your own logo, business cards, post cards and leaflets which are not.social networking can be a website, Tumblr, Facebook, Instagram, blogger, word press and online forums.

His museum-scale exhibition ‘show off’ at NRW Dusseldorf in September 2013 pulled in over 30,000 visitors in three months.Terry Richardson is also a successful self-promoter. Richardson uses most of his self-promotion through internet based promoting such as terryrichardson.com and terrysdiary.com, these websites also promote his other web based promotions like twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram and YouTube. However Richardson is also known in the celebrity world as he has taken photographs for Lady Gaga’s book cover and recently directed Miley Cyrus’ new music video ‘Wrecking Ball’.

A trade fair is an exhibition that is organised so that photographers can showcase they’re work and examine recent trends and opportunities. The biggest website for photography trade fairs is British Journal of Photograph where you can find previous and upcoming trade fair events.

Individual and corporate promoting are very different ways of promoting. Individual promoting is when you are promoting yourself alone. Corporate promoting is when you may work with a big company. For example David Bailey has worked closely with Kodak and Olympus. By working with these big companies, David Bailey was being promoted by them and they were using him as an inspiration for more sales.

Face2Face project was the largest illegal photographic exhibition ever. For this project J.R. took portraits of Palestinians and Israelis which were then pasted face to face in monumental formats on both sides of the wall that separate each other. This is the a quote from the actual face 2 face website. “when we met in 2005, we decided to go together to the Middle-East to figure out why Palestinians and Israelis couldn’t find a way to get along together.after a week, wehad the exact same conclusion these people look the same, they soeaj almost the same language, like twin brothers raised in different families. A religious covered woman has her twin sister on the other side. A farmer, a taxi driver, a teacher, has his twin brother in front of him. And he is endlessly fighting with him. It’s obvious, but they don’t see that. We must put them face to face. They will realise.”This a example of unconventional promoting. J.R. put large prints on the wall that separated the Palestinians and Israelis. This type of promotion can also cause controversy.

Overall all these promoting tools are and can be linked together. Whether you start off with little promoting tools and work your way up, either way is crucial.
