Sunday 26th September 2021 - Pentecost 18

We disagree. Disagreement is part of human life. Mostly it causes us

little pain, especially if we have a relationship with those who disagree

with us. Brené Brown has said, “People are hard to hate close up.”

I say, “It depends.”

What do we do with our disagreements?

What do we do with our confusion or anger at those who promote views which we see as harmful and even dangerous?

What do we say about people who seem to us to be distorting

what is precious to us?

Jesus was willing to walk away. Luke says Jesus was happy to see others ‘doing good’, even when they weren’t ‘on his side.’

Jesus called us to love our enemies and to do good to those who

oppose us. It is a challenge.

The prayer attributed to St Francis offers us a way of understanding the approach of Jesus:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:

where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console,

to be understood as to understand,

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive,

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

Ian

Your Retiring Offering next week will go to

the UNHCR Appeal for Afghanistan

The situation in Afghanistan is rapidly deteriorating and we are witnessing

large scale displacement amid what is now a humanitarian emergency.

This latest wave of violence is another blow for Afghans, who have suffered

more than 40 years of conflict, natural disasters, food insecurity, and chronic

poverty. On top of this, the COVID-19 pandemic has overwhelmed the health

system and less than four percent of the entire population is fully vaccinated.

UNHCR 2 Billion Kilometres to Safety Challenge

Can you go the distance for Afghanistan?

And here’s another way in which you can help the crisis in Afghanistan.

Every year, thousands of refugees are forced to flee their homes and set out on

a difficult, dangerous trek to safety. 2,000,000,000 kilometres is the approximate

distance refugees cover worldwide each year. It is their journey to survival.

This November, UNHCR is asking you to walk in their shoes by taking part

in the UNHCR 2 Billion Kilometres to Safety challenge.

You can sign up yourself or take up the challenge with a friend, your family or

colleagues. Simply choose the distance you can cover in a month, register here

and ask as many people to sponsor you as possible.

And - you don’t have to walk - you can run or cycle, too!
