Access Panels & Hatches

General Information

2

Terminology

The term “Panel” or “Panels” describes wall or ceiling accesspanels that are used for periodic maintenance or repairs and aremechanically fixed into position. The term “Hatch” or “Hatches” isapplied to wall or ceiling access hatches that are in regular use andare either hinged or screw fixed.

System Introduction

Access panels and hatches are common and essential elementsused for carrying out daily maintenance in buildings and inspectionroutine to most E&M services within building compartments.Depending on the location, some of these will require smallopenings, typically 600mm x 600mm, while some areas may requirelarger openings, e.g. the size of a single or double leaf doorset.

Promat access panels and hatches are approved in a range of sizesand fire resistance, offering flexibility for any type of opening insubstrates such as walls, floors or ceilings. They are easy to installand can be finished or decorated to suit the surrounding buildingelements. The types of fixing for these panels and hatches largelydepends on the area of application, frequency of carrying outmaintenance, appearance and the weight of the panels/hatches.

Common in most applications, hinged hatches are usuallyprefabricated in a standard size of 600mm x 600mm. They can alsobe custom-made to specified dimensions, depending on size andquantity. Safety chains are fitted to all panels exceeding 450mm x450mm in size. Preformed holes in all four sides of the frame arepositioned to match wall and ceiling metal structures for securescrew fixing of the panel to the structures.

Screw-fixed panels can be fabricated in-situ and offer idealflexibility when used in conjunction with Promat fire resistantpartitions or ceiling systems.

Note: installed access panels or hatches should have a fireresistance at least equal to the surrounding structural elements. Thestructural elements can be of masonry or concrete, drywall partition, suspended ceiling etc. Care should also be taken to ensure any gapsbetween the panel/hatch and the aperture are thoroughly sealed toprevent the passage of hot or cold smoke or gases.

Fire Testing Methods

Fire resistance testing for Promat access panels or hatches isconducted to either Australian Standard AS1530: Part 4 or BritishStandard BS476: Part 20 & 22. However, DIN 4102 has beenconsidered in some instances. The test specimen is heated in themanner prescribed within the standard until the failure criteriahave been reached. The time to reach the failure criteria arerepresented by performance measurements, referred to as FireResistance Levels (FRL).

1. Structural Adequacy (Stability)

Failure is deemed to have occurred when either:

(a) collapse occurs, or

(b) the deflection or rate of deflection occurs which is in excess ofthat specified in the standard and is applicable to the elementunder test.

NOTE: These criteria are generally only applicable to load bearingelements although (a) can in some circumstances apply to panelsand hatches.

2. Integrity

The ability of a specimen of a separating element to contain a fireto specified criteria free from collapse, holes, cracks or fissures andsustained flaming on the unexposed face.

3. Insulation

Failure is deemed to have occurred when either:

(a) the average temperature on the unexposed face of thespecimen increases by more than 140°C above the initialtemperature, or

(b) the temperature at any point on the unexposed face increasesby more than 180°C above the initial temperature.

Finishing

Once installed, Promat access panels or hatches may be painted, subject to end user preference. It is recommended that the paintused should be a water-based paint, e.g. emulsion paint.

If necessary, the surface of access panels or hatches can bedecorated using wall paper or proprietary decorative tiling.

Fixing

In order to avoid cutting furring channels or installing metal studs at450mm or 600mm centres, the use of panel sizes somewherebetween these dimensions is recommended.

When a hinged access panel or hatch is installed on a wall, it isimportant to always place the hinge arrangement at bottom of thepenetration, not at the side. This will prevents the panel from fallingout of the wall because the locks at the top of the panel hold it inplace and hinges at the bottom are not exposed to frequent orprolonged pulling stress.
