Samyang makes essential materials for a broad range of industrial
sectors, including electric and electronic material, automobiles,
textiles, environmental engineering, foods and agriculture.
Samyang’s chemical operations are developing special purpose
products and alternative materials to ensure that life in the future to
be convenient and plentiful. Areas of endeavor include engineering
plastics, industrial fibers, PET bottles, PET bottle recycling, ion
exchange resins, TPA, and electronic materials.
Engineering Plastics Do you know that plastics are used
to make parts for automobiles, high-tech electronic
products and precision machinery? The main product
line of the Samyang Corporation’s Chemical Division is
engineering plastics, which outperform ordinary plastics
and which are being used in an increasing range of ap-
plications.
Engineering Plastics can be stronger than metal and
as clear as glass; the possibilities for the engineering
plastics produced by Samyang Corporation are endless.
Their superior transparency, durability and mechanical
properties are being put to use in an ever-expanding
range of applications, from electric and electronic
products, automotive parts and machinery parts to
advanced optics.
Samyang Corporation is applying proprietary polymer
and chemical technologies to produce polycarbonate
(PC), polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), polyethylene
terephthalate (PET) compounds as well as the more
recently developed thermoplastic elastomer (TPE).
Ongoing research is conducted to develop a wide var-
iety of grades and optimal product designs to suit in-
dividual customer requirements. The company is also
committed to constantly upgrading the quality of prod-
ucts and services.
Polycarbonate, with its excellent transparency, heat
resistance and mechanical properties, can be used in a
wide range of applications that include electric and
electronic product parts as well as supplies for the
medical industry. Samyang Corporation sells about
60,000 tons of PC each year, produced by Samyang Kasei.
It is recognized world wide for its excellent quality and
technological sophistication.
Polybutylene terephthalate boasts outstanding heat
resistance, chemical resistance, and mechanical
properties. PBT crystallizes rapidly and offers superb
moldability, making it well suited for use in parts for
electric and electronic products and automobiles.
Samyang Corporation produces 5,000 tons of PBT a year
in diverse grades, depending on added properties such
as impact reinforcement, flame retardance and strength
reinforcement. This diverse product lineup has been cer-
tified by UL, AMECA, TUV and other leading agencies,
which proves our world-class technology.
In addition to researching, developing and producing
engineering plastics, Samyang provides technology
training on the subject. The in-house Plastics Academy is
designed to enhance understanding of the related tech-
nologies and develop proficiencies to accommodate
customer requirements. Customers may also attend this
training to obtain all the product information that they
need.
From the long-term perspective, engineering plastics
will remain a core material for automobiles, electric and
electronic products and information devices. With an eye
on the Chinese compound market, the company will
provide solutions through partnerships. The business
structure is being enhanced for greater added value and
profitability; the product line continues to be upgraded
and the production capacity of China operations is stead-
ily expanding. The goal is to grow as a maker of world-
class specialty materials.
Samyang Engineering Plastics (Shanghai) was estab-
lished in 2004 and has an annual capacity to produce
14,000 tons of PC and PBT compound for sale locally.
The engineering plastics produced here offer the
necessary heat resistance, wear resistance, and flame
retardance to make electric and electronic, automotive
and office machine parts. Samyang Engineering Plastics
(Shanghai) is helping to take Korean technologies into the
global marketplace, and the output capacity will be
expanded as Chinese demand grows. At the same time,
Samyang Corporation Foundation for Industrial
Expansion, Power for Industrial Development
12
strategic relationships with domestic Korean operations
are helping to turn Samyang into a global corporation
that maintains close affiliations with local customers.
Samyang Industrial Fiber The term [fiber] is normally
associated with garments, but industrial fiber has
more broadened end applications than just fiber for
garments. Samyang Corporation has been pioneering
the industrial fiber business from its earlier stage and
kept leading new application development by de-
livering broad and customized product portfolio and
expertise in world market.
High tenacity yarn, Triron, is one of the most im-
portant products in Samyang’s industrial fiber portfolio.
It is used where greater strength is needed than apparel
fiber can provide; major applications include coated fab-
rics and yarns, narrow fabrics, rope, seatbelts, convey-
orbelts, off shore mooring and civil engineering fabrics.
The main grade for Samyang Corporation is low
shrinkage yarns against heat setting, while the portfolio
includes twisted and untwisted yarns in sizes ranging
from 100 to 80,000 denier. The company boasts the
highest quality high tenacity yarn made in Korea.
The growth potential for Spunbond (nonwoven fabric
made from Polyproplyene Resin) is enormous as new
uses continue to be developed. Spunbond has out-
standing touch and hydrophilic, making the fabric
well suited for disposable diapers and anti-static
gowns. The excellent thermal insulation and elasticity
are why spunbond is now a popular material for mattress
and cushion covers.
In agriculture and landscaping, spunbond can be used
to eliminate weeds or prepare rice seedbeds, as the
fabric expels dampness and retains heat.
Using high tenacity yarn as the base material,
Samyang Corporation has developed new reinforce-
ment material for civil engineering applications. Sold
under the brand Trigrid , this geotextile boasts excel-
lent utility, stability, economy, and creep strength,
making it well suited for diverse construction site
applications. Trigrid was the first product in the In-
dustrial Fiber category to receive the R-Mark for
reliability from the Korean Ministry of Commerce,
Industry & Energy. It has also passed the Geosynthetic
Institutes Product Certification Program (GCI-PCP) in
the US. Trigrid is used in reinforced earth retaining
walls, slope reinforcement, paved road reinforcement,
and soft ground reinforcement. The product is now found
at numerous construction sites inside and outside
Korea.
Monofilament is one of the many industrial fibers
that are used in applications found in everyday life.
This filament yarn features individual strands 0.1mm or
larger in diameter, and it is used in zippers, dryer canvas,
and industrial-use filters. Samyang Corporation supplies
monofilament in diameters ranging from 0.2mm to
1.2mm to accommodate diverse customer requirements.
The monofilament grade for dryer canvas requires a
particularly high technology and quality, and Samyang
has developed its own version of this value added
product.

PET Bottles Another mainstay product line of the
Samyang Corporation Chemical Division is PET bottles,
which are increasingly used to replace glass bottles,
aluminum cans and various other types of plastic
containers. As such, demand for PET bottles continues to
grow with each passing year. The company entered the
PET bottle business in 1986 and now produces various
types on 12 automated production lines, located in
Daejeon and Pyeongchang. The PET containers made by
the company are very stable, gas tight, transparent and
lightweight, making them popular in the domestic and
Japanese markets.
Samyang Corporation continues to develop new
designs, technologies and materials to satisfy diverse
customer needs. The various PET bottles now available
include a heat resistant type for fruit juice and fruit
drinks, a specially constructed pressure-resistant type
for carbonated beverages, and a normal pressure type
for water and distilled liquor. The company is also ex-
panding into the non-beverage container segment and
employing a differentiation strategy to increase the
product portfolio. These efforts are generating new
revenue and keeping Samyang Corporation at the top
of Korea’s PET container business.
PET Bottle Recycling As a PET bottle producer, Samyang
Corporation has been well aware of the environmental
problems associated with waste PET bottles. There-
fore, the company established Korea’s first PET bottle
recycling center at the Shiwha Plant, capable of pro-
cessing 12,000 tons (250 million PET bottles) of material
a year. State-of-the-art recycling technology is also being
applied to lower the impurity content and produce
recycled PET with excellent physical properties. The high
quality of this material is recognized globally.
Samyang Corporation remains Korea’s only company
to not only produce and distribute PET bottles but also to
complete the lifecycle by recycling the waste products.
Moreover, students, housewives and members of local
government organizations are invited to tour the
PET bottle recycling facility and come to realize the
importance of environmental preservation. Samyang
Corporation’s efforts to solve the environmental problem
posed by waste PET bottles and to take the lead in
Korea’s PET bottle recycling area have earned the com-
pany the Choson Ilbo Environmental Grand Prize and
the Seoul Municipal Government Environmental Award.
Ion Exchange Resins Samyang Corporation began
producing Korea's first ion exchange resins in 1977. The
company is applying its extensive production technology
base to develop specialty resins and functional materials.
It has also acquired design technology for ion exchange
facilities and is now designing production equipment, as
well as providing process engineering support and
technical consulting services.
Ion exchange resin was limited to desalination in
primary water treatment processes. More recently, how-
ever, their functions have been expanded to separation,
purification, bleaching and catalysts in such diverse
industries as foods, pharmaceuticals, specialty chem-
icals, semiconductors, and nuclear power.
Samyang Ion Exchange Resin newly launched its own
brand, TRILITE in 2006 due to the growing demands for
overseas sales and is gaining grounds by being exported
to many countries. Also, it is making every effort to satisfy
customer needs through ongoing research and a full
range of customer support services. In March of 2000, it
obtained ISO9001 and ISO14001 certifications, and has
continued to enhance the quality of its products and
services.

Samnam Petrochemical produces Terephthalic Acid
(TPA) from the feedstock paraxylene and received an
award from the government for exporting US$1 billion
worth of product in 2005. The company’s plant at Yeosu
has an annual output capacity of 1.7 million tons, making
it the world’s largest single TPA production facility. There
are two kinds of the products which are Purified Ter-
ephthalic Acid (PTA) and Qualified Terephthalic Acid
(QTA). Importantly, QTA is high quality and highly price
competitive. Customers can improve there own price
competitiveness as a result, thereby raising corporate
value.
TPA is used as the main base material for polyester
fiber, resin, film, paints and engineering plastics.
Boasting excellent heat resistance, wear resistance,
and insulation properties, applications are also
expanding into various types of bottles,electric/electron-
ic product parts, industrial materials, construction ma-
terials, and machinery parts. Strict and thorough quality
control ensures that Samnam Petrochemical consist-
ently delivers high quality TPA. An automated system first
analyzes the product as it is being made at the plant.
Then, the product is subjected to a rigorous quality
assurance before it can be shipped to customers. A Total
Productive Maintenance program is in place that makes
product quality, environmental protection and worker
safety the top priority.
Samnam Petrochemical has received the Company
Award for TPM Excellence and the Facility Maintenance
Best Practice Award and has been certified for ISO9000,
ISO14001, OHSAS18001 and PSM/SMS. All employees
participate in TPM activities to improve overall oper-
ational efficiency, lower production costs, and protect
workers and the environment, thereby raising competi-
tiveness and satisfying the demands of customers and
the local community. An independently managed en-
vironmental protection system has been adopted to
confirm that Samnam Petrochemical is living up to re-
sponsibilities, and the company strictly adheres to en-
vironment-friendly operational guidelines.
In 1999, Samnam Petrochemical joined the Korea Re-
sponsible Care Council (KRCC) as part of a commitment
to fulfill social obligations. The company is also active in
the local community. Employees are mobilized to clean
up local rivers, mountains and coastlines regularly, and
they donate money to a scholarship fund for middle and
high school students. The company and its employees
also contributed funds to build a children’s environmen-
tal library in the Yeosu area. Samnam Petrochemical is
expanding outside Korea and now exports half of its total
output to China. Tech-nology exchanges are also being
carried out with plants operating in Japan, Indonesia and
India to bolster technical competencies.

A Leader in the Field of Electronic Materials
Samyang Kasei was the first company in Korea to pro-
duce polycarbonate. The plant at Jeonju, Korea is capable
of turning out 120,000 tons of PC a year in over 150
different grades to meet diverse customer needs.
Polycarbonate, which is transparent, resists heat and
has excellent mechanical properties, is one of the five
most used engineering plastics. This new material is now
important in the medical, electronics and automotive
industries. A light transmittance of over 90% makes PC
a popular choice for protective covers over lights. PC
withstands impacts ten times better than regular PET
and is fifteen times stronger than nylon.
Polycarbonate is frequently used to make the
casings, wiring boards and illumination devices found in
computers, flat-screen TVs, VCRs and other electric /
electronic products as well as panels, bumpers, head-
lamp lenses and heater fans for automobiles. PC
applications are also expanding into precision parts for
cameras and watches, windows, baby bottles, helmets,
goggles, stationery items and other daily life items. The
CD and DVD discs that people enjoy when relaxing at
home are also made of polycarbonate.
The Samyang Kasei plant is equipped to produce
multiple grades of PC in small lots in order to respond to
specific customer requirements. Stability is very impor-
tant during manufacture, and production processes are
monitored constantly, enabling the company to respond
immediately to any emergency. After production, the
PC must pass strict quality control before packing and
shipment.
Increasing global demand for automobiles is steadily
driving demand for polycarbonate as well. Samyang
Kasei is emerging as a top player in the PC segment by
investing heavily to develop new grades and maintain
thorough quality assurance.
Samyang Innochem, established by a joint venture be-
tween Samyang holdings and Mitsubishi Corporation in
2009, has been producing 150,000 tons of BPA(Bisphenol
A) annually since 2012.
Samyang Innochem’s key product, BPA, has been
used as the main component for PC (polycarbonate) and
epoxy resin. PC, which uses BPA as the main material, is
normally used for the electronic gadgets, OA products,
automobiles, machine parts and light fixtures and for
the food equipment, it is used in the air-tight containers.
Also, epoxy resin is used for the internal coating to pre-
vent the corrosion of metals, the parts for electronics, the
construction materials and adhesives.
BPA has been used for PC and epoxy resin, which are
closely related to the industry and living and, it has been
advancing with a steep growth curve in the world market.
In line with this, Samyang Innochem offers the
competitiveness in the pricing for the customers and
also for the improved quality of BPA, it is producing the
quality products through 24-hour monitoring for the
processing, from the input stage of raw materials to the
consignment. Samyang is also providing only the
products tested by the strict quality control and de-
tailed analysis to the customers.
By producing BPA of world-class quality, Samyang
Innochem is not only providing greater satisfaction and
service to the customers but also growing as the world’s
first-rate global company which gets the recognition in
the domestic market as well as the overseas market
such as China, U.S and Europe.

Samyang Genex, was established in 1964 and has stead-
ily expanded its portfolio of essential materials and
ingredients for the food, paper, pharmaceuticals, fiber,
and cosmetics industries. The company was the first
Korea starch maker to operate Food & Bio Research
Center, which is dedicated to the development of vari-
ous new products and high quality. Facility certifications
include BGMP, ISO9001, ISO14001 and ISO22000.
Samyang Genex starches are made with the most
advanced technologies and know-how in Korea and
boast outstanding quality. The product portfolio includes
modified starches for pastries, bread and processed
foods as well as modified starches for industrial ap-
plications such as paper, fiber, construction and
cosmetics. The company also makes the corn starch
byproducts gluten meal, gluten feed and corn germ.
Corn sweeteners are essential, special-purpose
ingredients for the processed food industry. Samyang
Genex is leading this market segment with top quality
crystalline dextrose anhydrous, liquid dextrose,
maltodextrin and poly-dextrose.
Samyang Genex also makes sorbitol, maltitol, and
polyglycitol syrup, which are low-calorie polyol sub-
stitutes that do not cause tooth decay. Sorbitol is used in
toothpaste and other oral hygiene products as well as
gum and pre-made foods, while maltitol is an ingredient
found in sugarless candy and low-calorie processed
foods. Both sweeteners are popular with people looking
for healthier choices in the foods they consume.
Fructo-oligosaccharides are made from sugar and
can then be further processed into such variations as
galacto-oligosaccharides, isomalto-oligosaccharides,
and malto-oligosaccharides. These substances are
gaining popularity in the industry because when they
are consumed, the undigested portion serves as food
for propagating Bifidobacteria and other bacteria
species that promote intestinal health.
Samyang Genex’ food ingredients and additives
are widely recognized for quality. The company is
importing its products from Roquette(France); ADM(US);
Hayasibara, Meiji Confectionery and Toyo Sugar Refining

seven goods: dedication, sharing, abundance, health-
fulness, happiness, life and love. In this spirit, the
restaurant emphasizes freshness and healthy lifestyles
for today's family.
The“open kitchen” allows customers to directly
observe the chefs at work, and the services are second

Samyang has been using its proprietary know how in drug delivery
and novel biopolymers to establish itself as a world class supplier of
innovative pharmaceutical products. To support own research and
developments activities and to remain in the forefront of drug
delivery research Samyang has established a wordwide network of
partnerships, collaborative researchers and joint ventures with
parties who are on cutting edge of science of drug development.
22
Samyang Corporation split off its pharmaceuticals and
medical devices business into a separate entity on
November 1, 2011 and newly established Samyang Bio-
pharmaceuticals Corporation ("Samyang Biopharm").
Samyang Biopharm is dedicated to the development and
commercialization of novel formulation of drugs that are
therapeutically more effective, have low side effects and
promote improved compliance by patients. The novel
drug delivery system based products and biopolymers
devices developed and commercialized by Samyang
Biopharm cover broad range of indications such as
cancer, arthritis pain relief, nicotine addiction treatment
and wound closure. To maintain its leadership in drug
delivery related research Samyang Biopharm has taken-
up to build an ultra-modern fully integrated new R&D
center in close vicinity to Seoul When completed in 2014,
the new R&D center will further reinforce Samyang
Biopharm’s ability to provide effective, safe and con-
venient new drugs to patients.
Patches The advent of transdermal drug delivery
patches is dispelling the notion that treating ailments
necessarily involves the taking of oral drugs. Skin
patches offer many benefits as well. For example, the
rate of drug release and skin permeation can be
controlled to maintain prolonged efficacy. Samyang
Biopharm is now breaking new ground in the Korean
pharmaceutical market by developing various trans-
dermal patch products for helping people to quit smok-
ing, relieving arthritis pain, treating menopause syn-
drome, and preventing angina attack and controlling
cancer related pain.
Nicostop , the first nicotine patch introduced in
Korea, is designed to curb the symptoms of nicotine with-
drawal such as anxiety, poor concentration, nervous-
ness, and headaches. It helps smokers to phase them-
selves out of the nicotine habit naturally. Nicostop
represents some of Samyang Biopharm’s most advanced
technologies. The patch is very thin, feels comfortable on
the skin and is highly effective. This product is recom-
mended by the Korea Association of Smoking & Health,
and its effectiveness is endorsed by the many users who
have successfully quit smoking.
Rheumastop is a special patch for alleviating pain
and inflammation caused by arthritis,
sprains and other joint ailments.
The Rheumastop patch is applied
directly on the affected joint, allowing
the active ingredient diclofenac diethyl
ammonium to penetrate deeply and
be delivered to the snynovial fluid.
The swelling and pain are thus greatly
reduced. Diclofenac is the most fre-
quently prescribed medicine for arth-
ritic pain world-wide, and now patients do not have to
endure the inconvenience and side effects associated
with oral preparations. The patch is also effective for
relieving tendon sheath inflammation, muscle aches, and
many other maladies. Rheumastop patches wear very
well even on body parts that bend and do not interfere
with skin respiration. Therefore, Rheumastop is suitable
for extended application to inflamed joints.
Angiderm is a patch that is worn to help prevent
angina pectoris, chest pain that occurs when the heart
muscle does not receive sufficient blood. A matrix struc-
ture is used to make the patch transparent as well as both
thinner and smaller than other transdermal products.
Adhesion to the skin is excellent, so the patch will stay on
even while the patient is showering or swimming. There
are virtually no side effects such as skin rash. All these
advantages are making Angiderm an attractive new
alternative for treating angina pectoris.

Genexol Injection Paclitaxel is an antimicrotubule agent
that promotes the assembly of microtubules from tubulin
dimers and stabilizes microtubules by preventing
depolymerization. This stability results in the inhibition of
the normal dynamic reorganization of the microtubule
network that is essential for vital interphase and mi-
totic cellular functions. In addition, paclitaxel induces
abnormal arrays or bundles of microtubules throughout
the cell cycle and multiple asters of microtubules during
mitosis. These properties make paclitaxel a promising
anti-cancer compound. Genexol Injection is efficacious
against many cancers and has worked particularly well in
fighting ovarian cancer, breast cancer, Kaposi’s sarcoma,
non-small lung cell cancer (NSCLC) and gastric cancer.
Genexol is steadily gaining global recognition, and its
market size and export volume continue to grow.
Genexol PM Injection is the second generation
paclitaxel formulation adopting Samyang Biopharm's
patented drug delivery technology. Samyang has
substituted solubilizing agent used in conventional
paclitaxel formulation with bio-compatible polymer to
maximize the anti-cancer efficacy of the drug. Genexol
PM was successfully commercialized in Korea and is
being developed for the global market.
Medical Devices Pharmaceutical Division of Samyang
Biopharm has constantly applied proprietary technol-
ogies to expand into medical devices for the long-term
strategic purposes. Noteworthy items include bio-
absorbable surgical sutures, partially absorbable meshes
for repairing hernia, and barrier membranes for regen-
erating periodontal tissue after dental surgery. These
materials are fully or partially absorbed into the human
body within a preset period following the surgical pro-
cedure, eliminating the need for physical removal by
the doctor or dentist. The multifilaments suture bulk
materials, Trisorb and Neosorb , as well as the finished
suture product, Surgisorb , have been specially formu-
lated to minimize the risk of infection during their ab-
sorption by the human body. As such they satisfy both
USP and EP requirements. Surgisorb , which is produced
and sold according to ISO9001 / ISO13485 Certified
Quality System, received US FDA 510K approval in 1999,
followed by European CE Mark for quality in 2002.
Samyang Biopharm has also developed the monofila-
ments suture bulk materials, Monosorb and Monofast ,
which represent the next-generation in bioabsorbable
sutures. Samyang Biopharm success in the medical device
area does not stop with surgical sutures. Proflex , a
partially absorbable mesh for hernia repairs, has been
recently developed by Samyang Biopharm's state-of-the-
art technology. It can be more lightweight, flexible than
other existing products after absorption, and furthermore
reduce patient discomfort more effectively. The company
has also developed BioMesh , a bioabsorbable dental
implant for periodental procedures. The BioMesh is free
from plasticizers and therefore poses little risk of in-
flammation in the patient. The product has proven to be
very effective in periodontal tissue regeneration.
Samyang Genexbio is the first company in the world to
commercialize ‘Plant Cell Culture’ technology to mass
produce paclitaxel; the leading anti-cancer drug in the
world. Plant Cell Culture technology assure stable and
high quality supply of paclitaxel which has thus far been
exclusively produced by harvesting huge number of yew
trees. Paclitaxel occupies 30% of the world market for
cancer-fighting drugs. The substance is already widely
used in the US and Europe and demand continues to rise.
Samyang Genexbio is investing aggressively in its
Genexol business to grow as a biotech specialist that
promotes human health and wellbeing world-wide.

Scholarship Programs
Education
37
Korea’s first private-sector scholarship foundation was established by Samyang Founder Kim Yeon-su(pen name
Sudang). In 1939, he set up the Yang Young Hoe (subsequently renamed the Yang Young Foundation) to help cultivate
human talent in line with his stated philosophy of “earn money honestly and use it properly for the intellectual
advancement of all Koreans.” Thus, from very early on, Samyang has supported education, one of the very finest ways
to return part of corporate profits to society.
In 1968, Samyang executives decided to also establish the Sudang Foundation, expanding the scholarship pro-
grams provided by Samyang. Through changing times, Samyang has consistently provided scholarship programs,
recognizing that the best ways to advance the nation were to support research needed by society and support the
education of talented people. Besides student scholarships, the Yang Young and Sudang Foundations provide
financial support for research conducted by to 20-30 university professors and other professionals each year. They
also support the operation of educational institutions and academic organizations. Such broad support is helping
to keep scholarship alive and well in Korea.
Yang Young Foundation Yang Young foundation provides scholarships to 70-80 students each year. Originally, the
goal of the foundation was to cultivate talent in the national sciences, which would play a pivotal role in national
industrial development. The nation’s best scientific minds were given funds to conduct research, helping to put Korea
on the scientific map.
In 1962, the eligibility for student aid was expanded beyond the natural sciences to include the humanities. At the
same time, funding was provided to professors to assist in their research and the publishing of their research papers.
Finally, the financial assistance recipients were expanded to include organizations that promote social projects and
academic research.
Sudang Foundation The top management at Samyang Group established Sudang foundation. Initially, the goal was
to support the education of Samyang employees’children, but over time the scope of the scholarship program was
expanded nationwide. Unlike the Yang Young Foundation, the scholarships offered by the Sudang Foundation are mainly
for middle and high school children as well as university students. The Foundation also provides research grants to
professors in the natural sciences and helps educational institutions.
Moreover, the Sudang Prize was instituted to carry on the spirit of national service and human resources
development that characterizes the philosophy of Samyang Founder / Chairman Kim Yeon-su. The Prizes are
presented to individuals who have made exemplary contributions in basic sciences, applied sciences and humanties &
social sciences categories.
Samyang believes that the development of national culture and the arts is highly depended on the degree of
corporate interest. For this reason, Samyang has long been generous in supporting the preservation of traditional
Korean culture and offering financial assistance to artists. These efforts have contributed to a more beautiful world.
Samyang has been a leader in promoting balanced development of sports, medicine, academics and culture.
The Group established a women’s cycling team in 1986, when cycling was not well known in Korea. Over the next
two decades, Samyang has continued stimulate interest in the sport, and the team has produced many of Korea’s
best women cyclists, who continue to set new national records.
Samyang’s interest in society extends to the cultivation of human talent. The Group provides various kinds of
support to universities such as cancer research funds, academic infor-
mation center, and university development funds, ultimately contributing
to national economic progress and public health promotion.
Academic and Cultural Projects
Public Activities
38
Corporate involvement in environmental issues in the 21st century has long been the subject of debate. Samyang
understands the urgency for restoring damaged environmental areas and protecting the environment that all peo-
ple are entitled to enjoy. With this conviction, the Group has organized annual essay and painting events with an
environmental theme since 1996. The scale of and public interest in these events has grown over time, and now they
have become models for others to emulate. Moreover, the employees at every worksite across Korea periodically
volunteer to clean up a local mountain and river.
Samyang is also educating the public on the value of farming communities and is cooperating with them to pro-
mote a balanced development between the companies and the farmers. Each worksite forms ‘sisterhood’ with one
farming community in the vicinity and helps to protect the environment there. Employees lend a hand during the
planting and harvesting seasons and various exchanges (community service, cultural programs) are conducted.
Samyang has opened the Dongdaemun branch of the ‘Beautiful Store’ in Seoul. This establishment sells second-
hand donated by the corporate community and the public, to include clothes, shoes, handbags, books, CDs,
kitchenware, accessories, baby items and leisure goods. The proceeds to into a fund used to support various char-
ity programs. In addition, Samyang is conducting a Groupwide collection drive for goods and funds, while employees
and their family members volunteer to help out at the store. Such efforts are helping to provide hope to the socially
disadvantaged.
Social Contributions
Samyang’s philosophy dictates that “cultivating professional talent is just as
important as recruiting good talent.” All companies need excellent human
resources, yet some do not exert much effort in human resources development.
However samyang has a state-of-the-art HRD system that is preparing young
executives to become future leaders. The Group offers unsparing support in various employee self-development
programs to create a rewarding workplace and an ideal environment for the company and it’s individual employees.
At Samyang, they believe that employees should offer more than intelligence and job skills. With team spirit and high
work ethics, they believe that true “human talent” is to be socio-conscious and community wise.
With these kinds of ethics, Samyang has placed importance on cultivating human talent. From the moment new
recruits join the company, they are provided with systematic training, such as Basic Training Courses, On-The-Job
training, and mentoring from their superiors. These kinds of special programs help hone the professional skills
required by each individual and help them quickly learn how to work within the organization.
Early on, exceptionally talented employees are selected for the Future Leader program. With educational
opportunities such as enrollment in MBA courses inside and outside Korea, attendance in various job positions and
challenging assignments, Samyang will be able to cultivate future senior executive.
Meanwhile, the Job Specialist track is available for selected individuals who need specialized long-term career
development. They have opportunities to attend graduate school courses in Korea as well as specialist training
programs inside and outside of the company. Moreover, participants receive the support they need to obtain various
license certifications.
Samyang also has a program that trains global specialists. Those who are usually involved in overseas business
will be trained in foreign languages and dispatched overseas to gain experience on site. New recruits are also able
to participate in an overseas training programs, such as visits to local companies, seminars, and cross-cultural
experiences. Such training will able Samyang to gain global competitiveness.
In step with the times, Samyang is continuously developing employees online training courses. This able
participants to listen to lectures whenever and wherever they want by their choice of audio or video media.
Samyang employees are able to decide a career path that best fits their individual talent and vision. With sys-
tematic training programs, each and every employee will be able to maximize their potential and elevate their
competitiveness. Especially those who perform their best and show their greatest abilities will be enrolled in a
special program for future executives.
