In remote locations (isolated areas) i.e. at hilly areas grid supply isnot accessible at the same time establishment of grid is also noteconomical

In those remote locations where there is some availability of

renewable energy sources we can generate the power, but we cantfeed such generated power to the utility grids.

So, we have to create a stand alone system to feed local consumersand a maintenance free system is desirable

i.e. an automatic controlling system should be there to regulate thevoltage and frequency

Generally small hydro sites are found in hillyareas power varying from 1KW to 1MW.

    1-10 KW Pico Hydro generation

    10-100 KW Micro Hydro Generation

    100-1000 KW Mini Hydro Generation

Such units must be simple ,rugged, economical

    and user friendly.

PRINCIPLE The basic principal of maintaining the constant

power at generating terminals is to employ an

ELC and operate it in such a way that the totalpower (absorbed by the load controller andconsumer load) is constant.

P gen= PELC + PLoad If there is a less demand by the consumer the

balance of the generated power is absorbed bythe ELC.

The energy absorbed by the ELC may be utilized foruseful work i.e. for auxiliary loads like water heatingcooking ,battery charging , baking etc.

PROPOSED SYSTEM:A simple ELC is proposed that regulate voltage and

frequency with less harmonic distortion at thegenerator terminals

The proposed ELC consists of a 24 pulse un

controlled rectifier with chopper and auxiliaryload.

To achieve 12 pulse rectification the necessary requirement isthe generation of the two sets of line voltages of equalmagnitude that are 30 degrees out of phase with respect toeach other(+15and -15or 0and 30)

From the generator terminal voltages , two sets of 3-phasevoltages ( phase shifted through (+15degrees and -15degrees ) are produced with the help of reduced ratingpolygon connected auto transformer

The proposed ELC has been realized using 24-pulse converter and a chopper.

Comparative study of both types of ELCs (6-pulse and 24-pulse ) is carried out in

MATLAB using SIMULINK and Power System Block set toolboxes.

The proposed 24-pulse ELC will inject less harmonics into the supply system and

gives improved performance of generated voltage and current of ISOLATED

    ASYNCHRONOUS GENERATION.
