Preamble Like in many other developing countries, education in Uganda is a critical piece in addressing socio-economic
challenges that affect millions of people in our country. The currently used school buildings at New Styles
Secondary School have been in existence for the last t w e n t y two years, too old a n d its apparent that we
need to build and grow into a quality modern secondary school. This will enable us to specifically address
the education needs of the community.
Project Background Kawaala is a Kampala city suburb, inhabited by low income people. The slum continues to attract and
accommodate a number of socio-economically marginalized persons mainly as a survival strategy. With the
large numbers of families staying in the area, it became evident that there is need to have a modern school
with attractive services and buildings so as to keep children from these marginalized families in school.
The school is sited on approximately 3 acres of land therefore, it has the capacity to take up the increasing
numbers of youngsters in need to start or continue with secondary school education.
Whereas there is one government aided Universal Secondary Education (USE) school which offers an
opportunity for children from especially the low income earning households of the area, the school has
unacceptably large classes (100-200 students), and teaching and learning standards do not come close to them
which has contributed to the increased public ridicule of such schools.
Subsequently, over 70% of the families have already resorted to taking their children to private schools due to
the poor quality education which is available in such USE schools. Whereas wel l off parents take
their chi ldren to private schools where o n average every school term they have to pay US $ 70 for a
school bus, US $ 80 for school fees and US $ 70 for school requirements, the socio-economically
disadvantaged households in Kawaala cannot afford those charges. Critical to note is that in private
schools almost every year, the amount of school fees increases.
This confirms that the proposed classroom and administration blocks will indeed solve the worries of the
socio-economically disadvantaged parents in Kawaala as it will ensure excellent educational facilities and
offer quality creative education services to their youngsters.
Although basic education is better than none, it has become clear that the majority of children especially those
in slums are getting a raw deal when it comes to quality education. Many of the government secondary
schools are poorly managed and over crowed. They not only lack academic substance but also spiritual as well
as moral guidance which is just as important for the students’ future success. Furthermore, too many of these
schools are one-dimensional and do not offer opportunities for students to grow holistically. They only
address academics because they lack adequate facilities to help develop students in their natural gifts and
talents. Little or no attention is given to arts, culture, music or athletic development.
Consequently, it is on this background that the management of New styles Secondary School has embarked
on a goal; to build and develop the school which could cater satisfactorily in terms of standards and
resources for youngsters in and around Kawaala slum area, as well increasing on the number of professional
Ugandans living or transferring to Kawaala area.
Why Invest In Secondary Education
Uganda’s population is estimated to be 37million people and close to 52% of these are children according to
UNICEF. This means that majority of the population is mainly children. Statistics indicate that 65% the
parents can afford to take their children for kindergarten and primary but many of them fail to continue with
secondary education due financial inadequacies. However, if these parents had cheap and a high quality
education within their locality; with additional creative learning facilities that enable them to discover all
their God given talents and potentials they would pursue secondary education for their children.
About New Styles secondary School New Styles Secondary School officially opened for operation in 1995 with about 35 students from the local
Kawaala slum community.
The school is still located in the same area.
The school is registered with the ministry of
education and sports as a mixed day secondary school.
The school has a Uganda National Examinations
Board Centre Number therefore it seats its UCE
and UACE national Exams at school
The school handles student classes from S1-S6;
currently we have a population of 461 students and
with a staff of 28 comprising of both teaching and
nonteaching.

The Vision To build a legacy of Excellency by imparting all round education to the child.
The Mission To promote equitable education by modeling children into virtuous and God loving citizens- children of integrity and development oriented future fathers and mothers of our nation. T h e Mo t to E d u c a t i o n f o r d e v e l o p m e n t 1.) CHARACTER: We want to inculcate a firm foundation which leads to ethical beliefs, values and practices
among New Styles Secondary school students. We believe that a firm foundation is a key for the future
success of the person and their vocation in life as they seek to impact the nation.
2.) COMPETENCE: We want our graduates to be the best qualified individuals in their academic, vocational
and professional areas of their lives. This will be accomplished through a strong academic program delivered
by high-quality, competent and caring faculty who are skilled and passionate in their subject matter.
3.) CONFIDENCE: We want to create and foster a sense of self-assurance among our students. It is important
to address some of the cultural issues that prevent youngsters from becoming the best they can be relative to
their spiritual gifts and natural talents.
Current Status of New Styles Secondary School
Current classroom structures of
New Styles Secondary School
Twenty two years after its establishment, the school has aged. The school is run by competent persons,
whereby the management is overseen by a Board of Directors and a management team that comprises of the
Director, Headteacher, School Bursar and Director of Studies. Students have a body of leadership. The school
has an active Parents Teachers Association (PTA). New Styles Secondary School has strong links with other
private schools in the country and is a member of the Kampala Secondary Schools Association; this
association is comprised of both government and private secondary schools. The standard of education in the
school is exceptional and current results show that students are performing well up to the benchmark of
national schools. Parental support and involvement is good and there is a good mix of students from
surrounding communities.
Transformation of New Styles Secondary School New Styles Secondary school is seeking to
transform its structures and student population. The
current need in the ever overcrowding community
has affirmed that there is need for a school that can
provide adequate and quality education. However,
under the state of our current dilapidated school
buildings we cannot ably fulfill the big vision and
mission that we have for our students.
The transformation of the school will entail
construction of class rooms, dormitories, student
recreation facilities, administration block and a
multi-purpose hall. With this transformation,
there will be an expected increase in the s c h o o l
capacity, students’ enrollment and teachers.
The Ordinary and Advanced levels
After construction of the new facilities, the Ordinary level and Advanced level sections will have
capacity to accommodate 1000 students. The facility will be designed to provide creative learning and
enabling students to love school. Classrooms will be built and decorated in a student friendly way. In
these classes, the school mainly focuses on developing the student’s learning abilities and social
Skills. This is why the rooms
will be stocked with good furniture, color,
text books, games, and music among others.
As a school, we value the importance of a parent -
child relationship and bond especially in the early
years of a child’s life. It’s for this reason that we
encourage parents to bring their children into
boarding school in secondary. This is why we shall
encourage parents to visit their children at least
three times in a term besides encouraging parents
with a busy work schedule to pick them up from
school on weekends.
The Ordinary level
We want to improve the quality, capacity and facilities of our student classrooms
The Ordinary level section classrooms will be on the ground and first floors of the classroom blocks whereas
the Advanced level classrooms will take the upper blocks. Because we are mindful of students’ protection, the
Ordinary level section will be separated from Advanced level section.
a) Capacity: with the proposed class room construction, the Ordinary level section will have 16 classes while
advanced level will have 8 classes each with a capacity to accommodate 40 students. This will ensure that the
students can have quality attention given by the teachers. In total, the Ordinary level section and Advanced
level sections will have room for 1000 students per year.
b) Lessons and teaching methodology: Lessons offered to students in these classes will be inclusive of the
formal Ugandan Curriculum subjects taught using creative learning methods. This methodology will enable
teachers to have an individualized approach as they teach the students. Such teaching enables all learners to
understand, identify their weakness, improve and excel.
Students will have an opportunity to learn computer at an additional fee per term to ensure sustainability of the
project. Besides this, all the additional creative lessons aimed at talent and spiritual development of the children
will be offered at no additional cost.
Project Aims New Styles Secondary school is aiming at building excellent permanent school structures on the current
school plot within Kawaala comprising of 24 classrooms, library, computer laboratory, music facilities,
student dormitories, administration block, children’s play area, and a multi-purpose hall.
To continue offering good education opportunities for all students and teachers in the region and to develop
close ties with the local slum community of Kawaala, in areas such as; teacher training, family and health
awareness, play schemes, sports and environmental clubs, youth work etc.
Project Recipients The primary beneficiaries of this school will be children from Kawaala slum community and surrounding
areas in Kampala city. We want to offer all qualifying students the best possible education foundation.
We want New Styles Secondary school to be a model school to the rest of the country and will also be open
to receive students from other countries. The revenue raised from the students will be used for long-term
sustainability and expansion of the school.
Location The newly proposed school structure of New Styles Secondary School will be located in Kawaala, Kampala City in Uganda. The location i s easily accessible. We have taken into consideration av a i l ab i l i t y o f water and hydro- electricity.
The Project Execution Plan The construction and transformation of the school will be done in phases. This proposal is specifically
seeking funding for phase 1 of the project.
Phase 1: Construction of classroom blocks, dormitory blocks, administration block and IT suite/library.
Phase 2: Construction of multi-purpose school hall and brick fence perimeter.
Phase 3: Landscaping and sports ground facilities, playground areas and later teacher housing.
Timeline
We have an ambitious yet reachable timeline. Our goal is to find funding for the first phase by the end of 2017.
Upon receiving funding, construction will commence in January 2018 to be completed by December of the
same year.
Project Estimated Costs In order to complete phase 1 of the project, it will cost a total of $455,891 a detailed budget breakdown has
been attached to this proposal.

Project Returns On Investment Over the First Three Years We believe that investing in the transformation of New Styles Secondary school is a viable project. There are
several ways we shall use to raise revenue to ensure profitability and sustainability. With the new structures, the
school will be able to accommodate 1000 students every year. Our strategy is to encourage parents to bring
their children into boarding section. The school will provide transportation services to students that cannot
be in boarding section at an additional fee per term. Like mentioned earlier, the school computer class will be
open to provide computer lessons to people in the community at a fairly lower fee during school break. The
school will also realize income from sales of school uniforms, sports gears, and extra-curricular activities.
New Styles Secondary School Fees Structure
With this strategy, the school will be in position to break even in the fourth year upon completion of Phase 1
with a profit margin of 20%
Funding Requirements We are looking for investors and partners who love the mission of New Styles Secondary School. We are looking for people who are financially capable and have a calling to support education in Africa. In reality, this
is a call to invest in the lives of deserving children who have so much potential to become the change agents
that Uganda is dreaming of. By investing in New Styles Secondary School, you will be investing in the
transformation of slum communities and the nation at large.
Funding Options There are two primary funding options that I would like to present to those interested in helping New Styles Secondary School start on this vitally important educational institution:
Option #1 Social Equity Grant
This is a grant arrangement for friends of New Styles Secondary School with capital capacity to fund the
school in return for social returns, such as naming rights of facilities in proportion to gift. This would be a grant and not a loan.
Option #2 Become a Business Partner
There is a possible opportunity to become a partner. You
will not only share in the profits of the school, but also in
all other aspects of the school. There are several
partnership options that we can discuss for those that
consider this option
Level A term A year
Ordinary level $160 $ 480
Advanced level $170 $ 510
Hostel $30 $90
Conclusion Thank you for your consideration to help change the world through investing in education. The potential
impact for this project is beyond description. If touched to get involved in this noble cause, please use the
details on the cover page for contact and we shall be glad to further the discussion.
Their Future is
worth investing in!
