Empowering Our Seniors to Volunteer

The primary goal of diversional therapy is to facilitate the process of empowerment, enabling the patients to make choices and decisions to help maximise their participation in leisure experiences. Spearheaded by the Nursing Division since July 2014, these programmes engage them in leisure activities to enhance their psychological, intellectual, spiritual, social, emotional and physical well-being.

Senior Nurse Clinician Lo Yuk Hing (Chairperson) and the Divisional Therapy Committee (Than Than Soe, Peggy Lee, Mary Ann, Cing San Lun, Theint Theint Thu, Myint Myint Naing, Thazin, Vung Go Ciin, Naw Si Si Aung, Seet May Kay and May Phaw) were tasked with planning and organising progammes for their patients.

A total of 2,713 patients have attended the divisional therapy sessions and the number of patients participating in the activities

continues to rise. The monthly sessions have increased from 30 to 50, a big leap from less than 20 patients in 2013.

In a typical session, the patients participate in physical activities such as music therapy, art & craft and games. During special occasions like national day and community festivals, the team planned creative programmes that were out of the box, giving the patients a move away from the usual activities.

One of the highlights for this year is Singapore’s Golden Jubilee SG50. The team organised a SG50 photo book album using old pictures of Singapore from 1965 to 2015. The patients worked on their hand-made personal “SG50”album. Through this activity, it enabled the patients to interact and express their thoughts and hopes for Singapore.

The team is constantly reviewing to improve the programme through the feedback received from patients and ward staff to keep the activities fresh and exciting.

Wound care is one of the key reasons why patients are admitted to St Luke’s Hospital. Over the years, the wound care nurses have developed extensive experience and expertise in dealing with a variety of complex wounds and shared their knowledge at the annual wound conference.

As healthcare professionals are constantly facing challenges relating to effective wound management, the nurses at St Luke’s organised the basic wound care course to help prepare healthcare workers involved in direct patient. The objective of the course is to maintain skin health as well as basic wound care through evidence based interventions.

The 1st lesson saw participants attend a mixture of lectures and hands on sessions. Throughout the day, participants learnt to identify and prevent potential detrimental skin conditions, such as pressure ulcers as well as other minor skin disorders.

If you are keen to find out more about our future courses, please email us at [email protected].

Basic Wound Course @ St Luke’s Hospital

The rousing vocals of our elderly clients were a good reminder that seniors are more than frail dependents who require assistance. They are also a talented resource with the ability to give back to the community.

A group of clients from St Luke’s ElderCare Whampoa centre had recently performed onstage for the residents of All Saints Home (Hougang). Comprising 80 and 90-year-old clients, they sang classic songs from yesteryears. The hour-long session brought back many memories for the nursing home’s

residents, who enjoyed the peer-to-peer interaction. They were able to relate to the songs, and many were inspired to sing along or tap their feet to the tempo. Our elderly also enjoyed the opportunity to express their creativity in planning and practising for the performance.

The interaction was a first for both the residents of All Saints Home (Hougang) and our elderly clients, and an encouraging step towards meaningful and active ageing in the community.

The second Inter-generational Games for the year held at Chestnut Drive Secondary School certainly brought about buckets of fun, joy, laughter and love! Involving more than 150 clients, caregivers, staff and volunteers, the activities arranged were undoubtedly enjoyable.

With an entire line-up of games and activities that involved singing, ball games and interactive applications on iPads, our clients were truly entertained and engaged.

St Luke’s ElderCare would like to say a huge thank you to the staff and volunteers at Chestnut Drive Secondary School and everyone who was involved in putting the programme together. We appreciate all the time and effort spent to ensure the event went off without a hitch!

We are proud of our partnership since 2012 and we look forward to the future as we continue to work closely to organise events for our clients with the community.
