Context lighting

• Exploit colored ambient lights (e.g., provided by the HUE system) to provide informational awareness for users: design and implement light and color patterns for providing unobtrusive notification of contextual information. For example for incoming mails, messages, tweets, people at the door, unconfortable or unsafe home states, etc. Must tackle multi-user settings and/or presence.

Smart Baby Monitor • Design a smart baby monitor

which allows to constantly check a baby for situations where a parent intervention is needed. It should be room-independent (exploiting the home sensors) and may permit different actions depending on the current context, e.g., open a video channel towards the parents (by selecting the most suitable device), open an audio channel for baby reassurance, re-direct the audio channel over the most suitable device, take autonomous actions such as playing relaxing music, shaking the baby cradle, use lighting for avoiding darkness fear, etc.

Smart Gardener: the self-learning watering system (4)

• Smart Gardener is a project that would allow you to enjoy plants while lifting you from the task of watering them. It would also optimize resources by avoiding watering if rainfall is forecast in the near future or if the day will not be particularly hot. Feedback from the plants allows to tailor irrigation cycles to their specific needs without manual input.

Smart raise your hand system (2) • Problem • In most of the laboratory exercises all students call the

professor (or his assistants) a lot of times to check their works or ask help. This is a waste of time because of the professor has to run around the lab often to explain the same things; the student has to hold his hand raised waiting for the professor.

• My Idea: • Every computer has a device to detect that the

student needs help as if he has raised his hand. The student can either ask a generic help or specify witch point he needs help. The student is placed in a queue. Every professor has a device(ex. smart watch) that signals the next student to help and if a lot of requests are on the same point it suggests that he could explain it to all students on the blackboard.

• Is it smart ? • Every time that a class ends the entire exercise the

system collects statistics on requests of help. In the next exercise that involved the same class, a display will suggest in which part of the laboratory the student should sit. The purpose is to place the students which need more helps near. So the system learns time by time how to is better place students. In this way the teacher have not to run from one side of the laboratory to the another.

• The statistics can also be used to know which arguments are more critic and the professor can explain them again in classroom.

Thermostat reimagined once again (3) • My idea starts from a great admiration of the Nest learning

thermostat and my personal interest of having a modified version of it in my apartment.Nest actually has all the electronics to serve the american low-voltage control systems but not a simple relet to interact with italian and european high-voltage driven system.Nest uses the 24V american control system to absorb power and recharge its internal battery which is used essentially to keep the wifi connectivity on. It it almost impossible (I think) to do the same thing (absorb power) from our high voltage control system without activating the heater.

• Nest is not integrable with the alarm system, which is the system who holds the best informations regarding the movements in all the house and so it could use these datas to better understand if the house must be heated or not.

• It uses too much memory and computational power for its very heavy proprietary statistical prediction algorithms which are essecially based on datas coming from just one particular point of the house, if you want you can buy more nests and make them work together to increase the quality of prediction but this means 250$ more for every nest. So, my idea/solution will be a distributed network of wall plugs (so them can absorb all the power they need to serve the wifi chip and have no battery) of which only one has smart wifi connectivity and the others are connected with other less expensive, slower protocols + a relet box to be attached in place of the old house thermostat. Every wall plug can sense: movements, temperature, humidity, light intensity and help the main one managing the house temperature together with other datas like calendar, smartphone allarm clock settings, weather conditions etc. This system actually build a dynamical house routine which might be integrable with other existing smart environment devices to share its prediction algorithms and manage other house facilities (coffee machine, lights, blinds, etc.). It can also be used as a very easy to install alarm system which might be intelligent enough to require no activation/deactivation by the user, this merging: MAC addresses of wifi connected devices, house routine and other parameters to decide whether its you or a criminal walking in your house. I would be really excited to design such probabilistic control system with support of team members and professors.

Smart management of computers in laib (1) • My idea is to create an application the aim of which is 1)to help students save precious

time and 2)optimize the gestion of the laibs management.

• To the question "Why?" I answer with an example: if a student is in Corso Duca degli Abruzzi and needs to finish an Architecture work using a program, like 3DS Studio Max or similar, it is likely that he/she will spend 5/10 minutes to reach one of the laboratories that host computers on which he could run the program needed, then he'll spend several minutes to find a vacant computer and he will wait several minutes untill the program runs properly and will start working. If he's not so fortunate the program will crash and he'll have to find another computer or he will be asked to go away because of a lesson. My solution is based on a program, a database and an application. The program should be installed on every computer hosted in politecnico. Everytime a student uses a computer, the program collects informations about what program the student is using and which problems/anomalies occur in the session. It also memorizes how much time the program needed to start working and if it crashed. The application should be able to send in background all these informations to a database, hosted somewhere in a single workstation or distributed, while the student is working. Every student could make use of the service by installing on his/her smartphone an app in which he can specify that he needs a computer, which programs he presumes to use, where he is (if he doesn't allow localization). The app will connect to the database and find the nearest laib in which the student could find a computer that presumably will work properly and will tell him exactly the computer that it has found, because the database knows which computer is being used and which not (it receives informations continuously from the program installed). The app should also be installed on the self-service boxes to be fruible by really each student. The app will also ask to the student if he wants to book the computer so on the screen of the computer will be visualized something like "booked". If the student doesn't arrive in a specific time he loses the priority. The student could also share his timetable with the app so it could remind him the laboratory lessons and ask him if he wants it to book a computer for the time he presumely will arrive. The informations in the database wil be very helpful to laibs technicians and will avoid situations as: the laboratory lesson has started half an hour ago and some students are still trying to run the program needed or the computerized exam could not start because some computers don't work. I for example had this problem in the LADISPE during the Python laboratory. I think this idea could be reduced and applied to just the LADISPE but obviously it won't be much useful because of the small number of students that go there. Hope to find a better idea.

Mood Control (3) • A mood control system that tries to understand the

mood of the user depending on weather forecast, sleeping habits, and outings, to name a few. The system will try to improve the mood of the user by controlling the amount and color of lighting in one’s living environment, the amount of fresh air and air quality, and suggestions of outings. For example, if the weather forecasts for the morning are cloudy or rainy, the light intensity after the user switches the lights on should be a bit higher than usual, the color of the lights should have more red, and the room temperature a bit warmer. Another example is if the system detects that the users has not left the environment for an extended time period (few days), the system should suggest to the user to go out by showing a message on the user’s TV, phone or personal computer. Another is if the system detects that the user’s calendar shows that the user has spent a long time at work (or university) then the system should make sure that the environment is well ventilated, the color of the lights slightly bluer, and depending on the season the room temperature adjusted. This will create a more relaxing environment for the user after a long day. In all of these scenarios, the system tries to predict and improve the mood of the user in a non-intrusive way that is almost transparent.

Smart Notifications (1) • In our daily routine we typically need to keep

track of several things to do (homework, work preparation), places to go to (outings), and events to attend (lessons, someone’s birthday, meetings). It can sometimes be difficult to remember all of these things at the right time and at the right place. Many of these notifications reside on different platforms that are not integrated with each other (our calendar is not usually linked to our social account or email). The system would use different methods to notify the user: on his TV screen (if they are using it alone), on his smartphone, tablet and computer, and a light notification (like a small LED flashing a certain color in the room the user is currently in), to name a few. The system would aggregate the user’s direct notification (like a mention on twitter or a tag on Facebook or an important email) from different social networks and presents them during an appropriate time. An appropriate time of notification is determined by the user’s calendar, the importance (or priority) of the notification, the user’s location, and finally the user’s preferences.

Intercom 2.0 - DoorOnPhone (6) • Hi guys, we are Marco and Gaetano, members of the

team PacMan. • We are planning to develop a system called

DoorOnPhone that transforms the concept of intercom in a powerful home-station that can be controlled by a smartphone.

• Users of DoorOnPhone would be able to leave their house and receive a notification on their smartphones if someone is calling on the intercom and the system can play a default audio-message.

• Most of modern intercoms have a camera, so you can watch people in front of the camera, open the door and speak with the person who's calling you. Notifications can provide a photo of who is currently calling.

• DoorOnPhone can be used as digital security system that recognizes faces or images. For example it can unlocks the door when you show a private encrypted image from your smartphone as a special key.

• These special keys can be used to authenticate some companies membership. Imagine that someone at the door pretends to be a maintenance man of some company. If the company provides him with a special key and intercom is connected to a trusted database, you can trust that man.

• DoorOnPhone would be also social, especially connected with Facebook. Users can see log information about people whose press the intercom's button. The system posts some information in a private facebook group giving statistics.

Never be locked outside your apartment again! (5)

• My idea consists in a system able to memorize some objects (such as wallets or keys) always carried by the users.

• A user is associated with a set of objects that the system is able to sense and memorize while someone is entering or exiting from a closed environment.

• It warns the user if he is not carrying all the objects he usually has.

Save Light & Work Happily (4) • My idea is very simply and can be applied anywhere,

but due to the course requirement I will set the environment as LADISPE.

• It happens quite often that the lab is not fully used (i.e. some computers are free), but this happen in a random manner and due to this the whole light system of the lab is always on. My idea is to create a system where for example a monitor in the lab tells the user where to sit, and when they go there only the light in that area is turned on. Then when the next person comes in the system tells that person to sit in the spot closest to the prior one in order to save light. If for example half of the lab is used we are using only half of the available light bulbs this way, and in case some people at some point in time decided to leave, the system would suggest the available users to go near each other to save light or will automatically shut down the lights of the empty stations.

• How the seating going to be planned will be according to the layout of the lab, and with respect to the sunlight available in parts of the lab. Sunlight can provide the lab with proper brightness, this way people can be working in the lab without using any electric light during the morning in the section covered by the sunlight. This way we can use the sunlight to save power. During night there will be a different plan to minimize the usage of power as well.

• Through different sensors we can also make sure that the environment is suitable for work. For example that it is not too bright/dark, cold/hot, gassy, etc.

• we can control such quantities by using curtains, windows, AC system, etc.

• This way we have a lab that is power efficient with a proper/healthy working environment.

Healty life control (3) • Based on people tastes controls diet

and sports habits. • It makes food menu based on people

needs (to lose weight, mantain weight, etc) and daily activities. Using a smartwatch it reminds people to eat at the right time, what amount of calories and kind of food can be eaten, to go to do sport (based on season) and to drink enough water daily. It also provides a list of food and items to buy for a selected number of days to be able to cook everything needed.

• It is connected to a scale and keeps tracks of people's progresses making stats avaiable to be consulted on computers.

• It can also be used as step counter/km runned counter/lenght counter for swimmers.

Smart comfortable lighting for the user (2) • My idea is to make the lighting in a home or

office setting help make the user more comfortable by controlling the "warmth" of the lighting depending on what time of day it is and the other ambient conditions (exterior lighting, type of work environment, etc.).

• This idea would involve not simply controlling regular light bulbs but, instead, having control of a lighting system that is capable of controlling multiple colors (e.g. an LED strip with red, green, and blue colors all on it). By controlling the lighting throughout the day, the system would be able to use the light to help the user be more productive by having a "colder" white light for in the mornings and having "warmer" lighting in the afternoons or for more casual settings.

• This system would most likely have to be programmed to be able to be overridden by the user for different scenarios and lighting preferences. But, for day to day use, the system should operate without any user intervention.

Smart Pet Feeder (1) • The Smart Pet Feeder is a system that

automatically gives food and water to a house pet. In the first weeks of use the user puts food and water for the pet into the Smart Pet Feeder manually as he or she would normally. From this the Smart Feeder system automatically learns the feeding and watering habits of the user. After a period of learning the habits of the user, the smart feeder system will automatically continue giving food and water to the pet accordingly.

• The system could also alert the user through a sms when a certain amount of food or water has been consumed, alerting the user that the pet might need to be taken outside to go to the bathroom.

Consumes monitor & optimizer (0)

• Having the economical concern started occupying a major role in most of the people everyday lives, this idea is mostly focused on developing a system able to help the user spare his money in the handling of the house consumes.

• The system should be able to store up-to-date information regarding the cost tables of electricity and gas; basing itself on those data, it will help the user in choosing when and how to perform certain common operations, as the laundry, in the most convenient way from the economical point of view; another example of application could be a smart way of managing the heating system, based on a learning algorithm which analyzes the habits of the user. Finally, the system might also be useful in continuously keeping into account the amount of electrical power being used, in order to detect when no more devices can be attached to the wall sockets.

Smart and Customizable Environment (4)

• My idea starts from one of the biggest trouble in Polito: find an empty study room or lab, especially in exam period. So i thought about creating a sort of automatic check-in in a room in order to provide information about people inside it to other students. The check-in could be implemented using smartphone(wifi?, bluetooth?, rfid?, nfc?) and/or other sensors.

• The same technology can be used to customize and setup an environment (home, lab, classroom) according to who's inside it (this point is more interesting i think), for example give access permissions to open a door, turn PCs or lights on, play music, adjust the temperature ecc...

• If the person is not present for programmed activity the system sends a message to the user advising him the activity will not be started (ex. if everyday my tv turns automatically on at the same hour but I have a little delay receiving the message I am aware that when I found the tv switched off it is not broken).

Remote smart hospital (1) • One of the greatest improvements that

could be reached through the development of AmI in everyday life is what concerns heathcare and 'smart hospitals', which can be pursued both in hospitals and at home. Maybe a patient could be allowed to leave hospitals in a few day if him or her is under direct control of the doctor through a system of smart enviroments (maybe developped in the badroom) that assure to observe some parameters as pressure, hartbeats etc. or to compile prescriptions and reminding the patient to take pills or something like this. This may improve expecially the life of terminal ill or chronic patients preventing them from frequently visit hospitals.

Smart groceries (1) • My idea is an application to be

helpful during your grocery shopping. At first, the application should be connected to your refrigerator in order to know what you already have at home. Then, the application will give you information and tips for the following :

• -Ideas of meals you can do with what you already have and what you need to complete it.

• -Find cheapest place to buy the food you need.

• -Nutritional information about the meal you're interested in.

Smart home: Energy Saving & Comfort (1) • Similarly to "smart house light temperature hot water and gas", my idea integrates

these concepts from an energy savings perspective, without compromising comfort. The system will detect each individual and act accordingly. Depending on the person's mood, the system will choose from different settings in light intensity/color, music type/volume etc. If the person is home alone, these settings can be extended to the rest of the house. If not, a compromise between all people's settings can be met, or no setting whatsoever. As the individual moves around the house, lights, music etc get switched off and on so to save energy. In the same way, motorised blinds are automatically controlled in two ways: - When no one is at home, they are completely open, to maximise solar gains during the day, and completely closed at night to minimise heat loss. - When the individual is at home, two settings can be chosen: Automatic Mood control and Automatic Energy control. Both settings can be manually overridden with a smart watch, where you can open or close the blinds directly from the watch. The music control system can play music straight from spotify's playlists or a personal library. Room temperature is automatic too, through HVAC system and openable windows, where the system takes into account time of year (summer - imposed room temperature 18-19ºC. winter - 21-22ºC) and individual's personal preferences. With an inside thermometer, live data is fed back into the system to adjust settings (much in the same way as the Nest thermostat works). With absence of people, the house moves into Savings Control Mode, where the main objective is to save energy (switching appliances off...). The smart watch's integrated GPS will give the house an estimated time of arrival so that when the person walks in, everything is ready. The person can always inform the house of last minute changes with the smart watch. TV is also automatically controlled to meet the user's preferences, where it learns which channels you watch most, average volume etc. It turns itself on when various conditions are met (for example, you sit on the couch and you look straight at the TV). All settings regarding TV, room temperature, lighting etc can be modified through gestures. i.e. looking at specific things and lowering/twisting your hand. The house can also order automatically broken light bulbs or other devices so all you have to worry about is simply replacing it. Another unrelated idea has got to do with security. The house can inform you of trespassing and send you live video footage of whats happening in your house while automatically informing the authorities.

The smart reminding (0) • As an intelligent laboratory, the very important part is that the

intelligent system in the laboratory must be convenient and useful to remind people something happened or something could happen and has a corresponding action to react those situations.

• Base on this point, my first idea is to decide a kind of system to remind people, like “Hey, don’t forget your stuff when you are leaving”. To keep the system simple and avoid adding too much elements in the laboratory, I decide designing a system encapsulated into a block with several interface in it, called “black box”, located on the back of the lab-table, one of those interface connected into a “Central Computer” to process the data, the other one interface connected into the lab-computer which used on the lab-table we are talking about. The “black box” be designed in ordering to transfer the “pressure data” to make the “Central Computer” sure is there any stuff on that lab-table belonging to the lab-computer user who are using the computer?

• The amazing thing is that after you open the computer, the “black box” will transfer the “user information” according the user name you’re signing in the lab-computer and the “pressure data” to the “Central Computer”. Then your name is recorded in the “central computer”, and furthermore the “pressure data” also be received in the “Central Computer” used to decide whether there is some stuff be set on the lab-table. Once, the “Central Computer” has decided there is some stuff on the lab-table, after this, when you sign out the lab-computer, the “Central Computer” send information to the lab-computer, and the lab-computer will say to you, “Hey, ‘there is your name’ , don’t forget your stuff”.

That's my spot! (0) • One of the problem of studying

Lab PC Reservation (1) • With your smartphone you can reserve

a PC in LADISPE and let him log in with your Polito account. It will automatically download and install your most used software and/or the software that you may select with your smartphone itself [hard part I guess]. The PC will ignore any input given physically to the PC itself. You have 5 minutes to go to the selected PC, and insert your password to have full control on it [or face recognition may be used], otherwise the PC will be fully available for another person. This removes the loss of time caused by manually installing software, and assures a working station to be used by you. Optimising the cooling (0) • Optimising energy use should be a priority to

build a society based on sustainable development. Cooling buildings and houses during summer requires a lot of energy. During the day, when people go to work or at school, the radiation of the sun and sky heats the house. A lot energy is use only to balance this phenomenon. Blocking those radiation during the day time can allow the cooling system to slow down and saves energy.

• The radiations can be blocked with automatic articulated awnings. Those awnings can be automaticaly deployed when the radiation of the sun reach a certain point. In other words, when the sun reach a certain point in the sky (a certain degree of radiation) the awnings will be activate and they will slide out to block.

• So, in the morning or late in the afternoon (weak radiations), usually when we are at home, the awnings will be retracted and the soft radiation of the sun will reach the inside of the house.

• The reduction of energy use is part of the whole revolution that the society is passing through. Optimising cooling is only one aspect among many others.

Smart and cheap using of vibration sensors for security (0)

• My second idea is to provide LADISPE a system able to integrate the functions of antitheft alarm system and an eartquake alarm system. My idea is to provide the ladispe a system of simple vibration sensors and let a computer or just an arduino make all the elaborations and activate alarm, call 113, send the informations to everyone that goes frequently to the ladispe, and, if possible, communicate with all computers sending a special message after that they start saving the session and shut down.
