DESCRIPTION

The business rules layer contains not only rules that determine what to do with data, but also how and when to do it. For an application to become scalable, it is often necessary to split the business rules layer into two separate layers: the client-side business logic, which we call workflow, and the server-side business logic. Although we describe these layers as client and server-side, the actual physical implementations can vary. Generally, workflow rules govern user input and other processes on the client, while business logic controls the manipulation and flow of data on the server.Phase 3 of the Duwamish Books sample breaks out the business logic into a COM component to create a logical three-tier application. Our second step in creating a three-tier application is to provide a physical implementation of the architecture. To distribute the application across a number of computers, we implement Microsoft Transaction Server in Phase 3.5. The application becomes easier to maintain and distribute, as a change to the business rules affects a smaller component, not the entire application. This involves some fairly lengthy analysis because the business rules in Phase 1 were deliberately not encapsulated.

MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM

The Management Information System (MIS) is a concept of the last decade or two. It has been understood and

described in a number ways. It is also known as the Information System, the Information and Decision System,

the Computer- based information System.

The MIS has more than one definition, some of which are given below:

1. The MIS is defined as a system which provides information support for decision making in the organization.

2. The MIS is defined as an integrated system of man and machine for providing the information to support

the operations, the management and the decision making function in the organization.

3. The MIS is defined as a system based on the database of the organization evolved for the purpose of

providing information to the people in the organization.

4. The MIS is defined as a Computer based Information System.

The initial concept of MIS was to process data from the organization and present it in the form of reports at

regular intervals. The system was largely capable of handling the data from collection to processing. It was

more impersonal, requiring each individual to pick and choose the processed data and use it for his

requirements. This concept was further modified when a distinction was made between data and information.

The information is a product of an analysis of data.

A project is a systematic study of a real issue to resolve the problem with application of management concepts

& skills. It involve collection, analysis & interpretation of data scientifically leading to valid conclusion.

A project is typically defined as a collaborative enterprise, frequently involving research or design, which is

carefully planned to achieve a particular aim. Projects can be further defined as temporary rather than

permanent social systems that are constituted by teams within or across organizations to accomplish

particular tasks under time constraints.

Page | 6

PURPOSE OF PROJECT

The purpose of the project work are –

Provide opportunity to apply the theoretical concept to actual situations.

To explore the skills for gaining practical knowledge about real life situations.

To generate approach and confidence in problem solving.

To equip with tools & techniques of gathering, selecting, sorting & analyzing the information for

relevant use in practice.

PROFILE OF THE ORGANIZATION

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is one of the largest state-owned steel-making company based in

New Delhi, India and one of the top steel makers in World. With a turnover of INR48,681 crore (US$9.2

billion), the company is among the top five highest profit earning corporates of the country. It is a public

sector undertaking which trades publicly in the market is largely owned by Government of India and acts

like an operating company. Incorporated on January 24, 1973, SAIL has more than 1 lakh employees.

During 2010-11, the manpower of SAIL reached a level of 110794 (as on 31.3.2011) from 116950 (as on

1.4.2010) The company's current chairman is C.S Verma. With an annual production of 13.5 million metric

tons, SAIL is the 14th largest steel producer in the world.

Major plants owned by SAIL are located at Bhilai, Bokaro, Durgapur, Rourkela, Burnpur (near Asansol) and

Salem.SAIL is investing Rs 21000 crore in West Bengal, to set up a wagon factory. SAIL is a public sector

company, owned and operated by the Government of India. According to a recent survey, SAIL is one of

India's fastest growing Public Sector Units.Besides, it has R&D centre for Iron & Steel (RDCIS), Centre for

Engineering and Technology (CET), Management Training Institute (MTI) and SAIL Safety Organization

(SSO) located at Ranchi capital of Jharkhand.

SAIL manufactures and sells a broad range of steel products, including hot and cold rolled sheets and coils,

galvanised sheets, electrical sheets, structurals, railway products, plates, bars and rods, stainless steel and

other alloy steels. SAIL produces iron and steel at five integrated plants and three special steel plants,

located principally in the eastern and central regions of India and situated close to domestic sources of raw

materials, including the Company's iron ore, limestone and dolomite mines. The company has the

distinction of being India’s second largest producer of iron ore and of having the country’s second largest

mines network. This gives SAIL a competitive edge in terms of captive availability of iron ore, limestone,

and dolomite which are inputs for steel making.

SAIL's wide range of long and flat steel products are much in demand in the domestic as well as the

international market. This vital responsibility is carried out by SAIL's own Central Marketing Organisation

(CMO) that transacts business through its network of 37 Branch Sales Offices spread across the four

regions, 25 Departmental Warehouses, 42 Consignment Agents and 27 Customer Contact Offices. CMO’s

domestic marketing effort is supplemented by its ever widening network of rural dealers who meet the

demands of the smallest customers in the remotest corners of the country. With the total number of dealers

over 2000 , SAIL's wide marketing spread ensures availability of quality steel in virtually all the districts of

the country.

SAIL's International Trade Division ( ITD), in New Delhi- an ISO 9001:2000 accredited unit of CMO,

undertakes exports of Mild Steel products and Pig Iron from SAIL’s five integrated steel plants.

With technical and managerial expertise and know-how in steel making gained over four decades, SAIL's

Consultancy Division (SAILCON) at New Delhi offers services and consultancy to clients world-wide.

SAIL has a well-equipped Research and Development Centre for Iron and Steel (RDCIS) at Ranchi which

helps to produce quality steel and develop new technologies for the steel industry. Besides, SAIL has its

own in-house Centre for Engineering and Technology (CET), Management Training Institute (MTI) and

Safety Organisation at Ranchi. Our captive mines are under the control of the Raw Materials Division in

Kolkata. The Environment Management Division and Growth Division of SAIL operate from their

headquarters in Kolkata. Almost all our plants and major units are ISO Certified.

700 million Indians live in rural India.
India can truly move forward only when all Indians get every

opportunity to make their lives better – including building better homes.
It has been SAIL’s endeavor to make quality steel available to

every consumer in his vicinity. This is more than an effort, it is a mission born out of a firm conviction that

none in India shall be resigned to live in tacky dwellings for want of quality steel.
Even as SAIL triumphantly declares its contribution to projects of national importance, it

works towards empowering the smallest steel consumer in the remotest corner of the country to enable him

to build long-lasting, cost-effective and safe structures – homes, schools, hospitals, bridges, buildings etc.
Page | 29

SAIL has a country wide network of dealers; over 2000…and

still growing!. This band of dealers ensures availability of quality steel in virtually all the districts of the

country. There is a SAIL Dealer not far from where you are.
So take the first step towards your dream house. Step in to

Apna SAIL Shop and walk out with your requirement of SAIL TMT (quality steel rebars for construction),

SAIL JYOTI (India’s best galvanized plain – GP - and corrugated – GC- sheets and Light Structural.
Go ahead. Buy the best steel at the best price.
Come to Apna SAIL Shop. Do not hesitate even if your

requirement of steel is small – may be just a couple of SAIL TMT rebars to surround you with security, or a

sheet or two of SAIL JYOTI to cover your dwelling. No requirement is small…..because we understand

your need. And, fulfill it.
