MATERIALSYardages and cutting instructions are based on 42" of usable fabric width.

o 15—18×21" pieces (fat quarters) assorted dark prints (blocks)

o 15—18×21" pieces (fat quarters) assorted medium and light prints (blocks)

o 5⁄8 yard blue floral (binding)

o 31⁄2 yards backing fabric

o 63×81" batting

CUT FABRICSCut pieces in the following order.

From assorted dark prints, cut:n 216—11⁄4×18" strips (108 sets of

2 matching strips)From assorted medium and light prints, cut:n 216—11⁄4×18" strips (108 sets of

2 matching strips)From blue floral, cut:n 7—21⁄2×42" binding strips

ASSEMBLE BLOCKSMeasurements include 1⁄4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.

Press seams in directions indicated by arrows on diagrams. If no direction is specified, press seam toward darker fabric.

1) Sew together a dark print 11⁄4×18" strip and a medium or light print 11⁄4×18" strip to make a strip set (Diagram 1). The strip set should be 2×18" including seam allowances. Repeat to make a matching strip set.

2) Referring to Diagram 1, cut each strip set into eight 2"-wide segments (16 segments total).

3) Referring to Diagram 2 for placement, sew together four segments in pairs. Join pairs to make a Rail Fence unit. The unit should be 31⁄2" square including seam allowances.

4) Repeat Step 3 to make four matching Rail Fence units total.

5) Referring to Diagram 3, join Rail Fence units in pairs to make two rows. Join rows to make a Rail Fence block. The block should be 61⁄2" square including seam allowances.

6) Repeat steps 1–5 to make 108 Rail Fence blocks total.

ASSEMBLE QUILT TOP1) Referring to Quilt Assembly

Diagram, lay out blocks in 12 horizontal rows.

2) Sew together blocks in each row. Press seams in one direction, alternating direction with each row. Join rows to complete quilt top. Press seams in one direction.

FINISH QUILT1) Layer quilt top, batting, and

backing; baste.

2) Quilt as desired. Freda Smith machine-quilted a five-petal flower and loop design across the quilt top.

3) Bind with blue floral binding strips.
