Growing Perfect Produce is Our Passion! Is there any other food that inspires passion like a tomato? For some people it is pride in a special tomato recipe that has been passed down through the family for generations. For others, it is the vivid memories of the backyard garden fresh tomato that looks, feels, and tastes just the way a tomato should. At Houweling’s, we know what this means and it is that very same passion that drives us to grow the very best array of hydroponically grown tomatoes and cucumbers available. Producing the freshest, best tasting products is our number one objective.

Houweling’s high quality, premium brand is attributed to a number of factors. First, our California facility is in a unique microclimate that offers +300 days of sunshine a year, coupled with a temperate climate. This helps provide optimal regulated growing conditions for the plants to thrive in without the interference of the outside elements. Our experienced grower team is focused on applying craftsman care to our plants through the most advanced growing practices and technologies in the industry. Everything we grow is hand-picked and processed through our own grading and packaging plant or directly at the greenhouse. Our grading standards exceed those of the industry, so we are always distributing the highest quality products. Post harvest chemicals or waxes are never used and our food safety standards have been set high, and audited continually. Our California location gives us a logistical advantage being close to many key North American markets. This enables us to grow, pick, pack and ship quality consistent products year round.

Our broad range of products comes in an array of colors, shapes and sizes fitting the needs of all trade customers. Our tomatoes are

plump and firm to the touch, rich in color and flavor with just the right mix of sugars and acids. Our cucumbers are seedless,

with a light edible skin, and a crisp subtlety sweet flavor that is never bitter. Our product mix is supported by a swift infrastructure and strategic focus on working with our trade partners to find unique packaging solutions to increase

category profitability.

Houweling’s ‘Future of Sustainable Agriculture’ started with a vision – a vision based upon market reality and made real with advanced technology and hard work. This vision has led to the creation of a year-round vegetable growing environment that is establishing a new standard in sustainability for quality produce production.

True sustainability is centered about three core principles – Environmental Soundness, Economic Feasibility and Social Equity. Houweling’s ‘Future of Sustainable Agriculture’ successfully fulfills all three principles by reducing water draw, minimizing pest and disease risks, decreasing nutrient and energy costs and providing year-round employment for over 450 workers.

Driving this vision was the reality that as an established Canadian grower, Houweling’s growing sea-son was geographically limited to 8 months a year, with the result that the company had to fight its way back into the market every spring.

To address seasonal production issues, Houweling’s acquired land in Camarillo, California and built its first 20 acre greenhouse there in 1996. While an ideal location for allowing the company to grow through the year, southern California presented its own unique challenges, including the dry Santa Ana winds and high pest pressure. The dryness drove high water use, and the pest pressure predi-cated the installation of sun and ventilation-diminishing screens in the greenhouses.

Screening kept pests out but reduced light and ventilation significantly. In fact, light levels were reduced by 15 percent overall. With every one percent of light correlating with one percent of plant productivity a better solution for light transmission and atmosphere control was needed.

This led to the development of the Ultra-Clima greenhouse. Working with partners KUBO Green-house Projects on the greenhouse design, Enerdes BV on climate circulation systems and Argus Controls on climate control technology, Houweling’s was able to create an entirely closed and con-trolled growing environment.

The sum of these individual steps has provided significantly increased glass area for more light transmission and ground-breaking atmospheric humidity, oxygen, CO2, circulation and temperature control. This new technology was enhanced by a CO2 injection system that utilizes CO2 reclaimed from oil refinery smoke stacks, as well as EC fan motors to decrease atmosphere circulation energy draw.

Plant and biosafety were addressed through the use of overpressure – the positive pressure environ-ment of the active ventilation system keeps bugs out.

To address the energy needs of the facility, Houweling’s partnered with American Capital Energy to develop a unique solar photovoltaic-thermal hybrid energy system that provides 1 megawatt of elec-trical energy to run the circulation systems and heat energy for heating the greenhouses at night.

Solar electricity generation is expected to provide over 50 percent of the facility’s energy needs, avoiding CO2 emissions of over 1.5 million pounds annually. –This is equivalent to removing over 300 cars from the roads or the absorption of CO2 from over 400 acres of trees.

Closing the greenhouse environment also reduced evaporation of irrigation water. Excess irriga-tion water runoff is collected and transported to the water treatment system by FormFlex gutters. Treatment and recycling of condensation, rain, runoff water, and fertilizing nutrients is accomplished through Pure-O-Tech’s advanced water treatment and ozonation technology. This has resulted in a 66 percent decrease in water used and 50 percent decrease in nutrients needed – a significant production efficiency increase and cost reduction.

Water is also being used to heat and control the temperature of the greenhouses, with heat collected from the solar thermal array and warehouse refrigeration exhaust stored in million-gallon hot water storage tanks and circulated though the facility. Automated screens in the greenhouse close over the plants every evening to hold in accumulated heat through the night.

All these systems combine to give Hou-weling’s growers unprecedented control over the growth parameters and the op-portunity to fine-tune the ideal environ-ment for each plant. Proprietary com-puter control systems were developed to give growers real-time control capabili-ties of all growth variables. Through the control of humidity, temperature, circula-tion, light and CO2, Houweling’s is able to maximize crops by minimizing plant stress and creating a growth environ-ment as perfect as can be created – ‘The Future of Sustainable Agriculture.’

From KUBO Greenhouse Projects KUBO, the Netherlands’ leading greenhouse manufacturer, has maintained that the future of cultiva-tion under glass has depended on the development of a new kind of greenhouse providing more yield, reduced energy use, eradication of disease and perfect climate control. In fact, the green house of the future is available today. Our partner in development, Houweling Nurseries in Camarillo, California, is the first grower to test the new Ultra-Clima greenhouse.

KUBO is a 63-year old family business from Monster, at the heart of the Westland, Netherlands horti-culture region. KUBO has launched a number of important innovations in its history. Now, with the third generation of the Kuiper family at the helm, KUBO’s rate of innovation – backed by more then 10,000 acres of experience – is only increasing. This renewal is exactly what is needed, because greenhouse growers over the world are being confronted with the same challenge of how to the make the switch to ‘sustainable agriculture’. The KUBO greenhouse has a significant role to play in this trend towards a more sustainable cultivation under glass. Whereas improvements in greenhouse farming have previ-ously concentrated on details, the Ultra-Clima greenhouse is nothing short of a revolution on all fronts.

The Ultra-Clima system has been developed with an eye to the warm and dry external climate found in California. It is under these conditions that the innovative principle behind this KUBO greenhouse technology works best. The climate control system allows optimal regulation of air humidity and tem-perature. Using this greenhouse also leads to higher production yields driving lower cost of production. Higher production yields are achieved through increased light levels and enhanced carbon dioxide lev-els. Through the elimination of 90% of roof vents, light levels into the greenhouse are increased by 16%. Additionally, the reduction of roof vents reduces the loss of carbon dioxide injected through the air circulation system. Both light and carbon dioxide are es-sential inputs into photosynthesis, the process by which a plant grows and produces fruit.

The Ultra-Clima greenhouse underlines KUBO’s status as the world’s most innovative greenhouse manufacturer. The expecta-tions for the Ultra-Clima greenhouse are extremely high. It is no accident that the most progressive growers in the greenhouse horticulture industry, such as Houweling Nurseries, are especially interested in this concept. The 44-acre Houweling’s Ultra-Clima facility is proving KUBO’s conviction about the greenhouse of the future – today!

A Passion for GreenAmerican Capital Energy worked closely with Houweling’s to create an integrat-ed Solar Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal energy solution to meet the unique needs of Houweling’s ‘Future of Sustainable Agriculture’ vision. The system is designed to provide electric power and stored heat to power and warm Houwel-ing’s Camarillo greenhouse operations. The American Capital Energy hybrid solution is comprised of two distinct and proven solar technologies. The first is a 1.1 Megawatt solar photovoltaic system mounted on a tilting rack situated over a four acre water-retention pond. The tracking system assures maximum solar electric generation due to its ability to position the panels to face the sun from sunup to sundown. Secondly, the 1 Megawatt roof-mounted solar thermal heat system helps reduce greenhouse heating costs overnight.

We are presently living in a unique and challenging time, which has made it an economic imperative to explore and use alternative energy technologies to stay competitive. In seeking to reduce the company’s reli-ance on grid power and fossil fuels, Houweling’s will not only reduce their energy costs but will also enjoy provide great return on their capital investment. Hybrid Solar SystemsArgus Provides Automated Control Integration for the Future of Sustainable Agriculture

Argus is proud to be a technology partner in developing the future of sustainable agriculture with Houweling’s Nurseries in Camarillo. When Casey Houweling approached us to provide automated controls for this innovative, high-tech facility, we worked closely with him and his design and production teams to engineer an integrated solution that would address the control challenges that are unique to this new class of greenhouse vegetable production system.

Semi-closed, positive pressure greenhouses offer a number of potential production advantages over conventional green-house designs, including improved insect exclusion, disease reduction, reduced water and fertilizer use, and enhanced carbon dioxide enrichment. This project also includes additional heat collection, recovery, and storage systems to further improve production efficiency. In theory, these benefits should result in a near perfect combination of increased crop yields and reduced production costs. However, before this could happen, we needed to develop control strategies capable of co-ordinating the highly complex interactions between the many equipment systems.

Argus R&D worked closely with the Houweling team to develop monitoring and control strategies for each new system com-ponent. We then developed computer models to integrate these control strategies into a single, coordinated system. Argus continues to enhance and fine-tune this system as new equipment is brought on line and the facility moves through its first full production year.

Argus systems are installed in many of the leading greenhouse production, research, and botanical facilities throughout the world. We routinely provide control solutions for a diverse array of unique and challenging applications ranging from experi-mental chambers that simulate the growing conditions on future space travel missions to hydroponic plant production at the South Pole. Our work with institutions as diverse as the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia, Guelph University in Canada, and OARDC in Ohio keep us at the leading edge of Horticultural research. Customers like the United States Botanic Garden in Washington DC and The Huntington Botanical Gardens in San Marino CA depend on Argus to produce the wide range of climates required for their botanical collections.

We specialize in making complex equipment systems work together to perform to their maximum potential. This includes the integration of technologies such as biomass, combined heat and power, geo-thermal, and solar sources into new production systems designed to improve efficiency and reduce energy dependency. The Houweling Ultra-Clima Greenhouse project is paving the way for a new era of efficiency and sustainability in greenhouse vegeta-ble production. Argus equipment automation technology makes it possible to control the many separate components of this complex facility intelligently and seamlessly, so that unprecedented crop yields and energy efficiency can be achieved.

Water Purification The Oppenheimer GroupThe Oppenheimer GroupIn 1985, Casey Houweling forever changed the North American greenhouse industry by opening his first hydro-ponic greenhouse vegetable operation in Delta, British Columbia. A decade later, he began expanding into Cali-fornia with a vision of year-round hot house tomato production. And as the demand for products grown in this state-of-the-art facility grew, Casey chose The Oppenheimer Group to drive his marketing efforts. Oppenheimer has been in the greenhouse industry since the 1950s, and was one of the first North American marketers to bring greenhouse produce into a continent-wide distribution system that remains second to none. Oppenheimer is the right fit to add value to the Houweling’s Hot House ‘Indoor Advantage.’ Founded on shared beliefs in quality and innovation, the partnership combines both companies’ strengths to make a powerful union. Our mutual heritage in British Columbia, and high standards for safety and sustainability, built a solid foundation for a flourishing partnership. Currently, Houweling’s Hot House grows on 225 acres under glass in the U.S. and Canada. With Oppenheimer’s international logistics and marketing capabilities behind them — and Houweling’s sustainability front and center — Casey Houweling is poised to transform the greenhouse industry yet again. With the addition of 40 new acres under glass to the company’s California facility, the Houweling’s Hot House ‘Indoor Advantage’ brand promise has never been more powerful. Always known for impeccable product quality, Houweling’s new addition takes the company’s tradition of innovative growing methods and combines it with revolutionary ‘green’ technology. The result is a tightly-controlled environment capable of producing high yields of premium vegetables — but with a level of environ-mental sustainability the likes of which the industry has never seen. In fact, the new facility is the world’s first high-volume greenhouse to bring together hybrid energy sources, nutri-ent and soil recycling, and water conservation. Water consumption has been reduced by more than 60 percent. Fully enclosed and pressurized, the patented greenhouse design also protects the growing plants and young vegetables from exposure to the elements, improving quality, flavor and consistency. So what does the Houweling’s ‘Indoor Advantage’ mean to you? In a day and age where your shoppers are more concerned than ever about where their food comes from and how it is produced, the ‘Indoor Advantage’ offers

new levels of quality, safety, and sustainability they won’t find anywhere else. And the fact that Houweling’s vegetables taste even better than they look will bring people

back, again and again.
