enerMENA Project
Overall ObjectiveSustainable implementation of solar power plant technology in MENA region
Coordination: DLRDuration: 09/2009-12/2011Financed by: German Federal

Background –
CSP implementation in MENA
Ambitious plans for CSP project but insufficient technical capacities:Existing plans to construct several large scale CSP power plants,Poor know-how level and limited technical capacities, Local participation is very limited,
Leads to unsustainable and slowing down of the development process as well as cause avoidable costs.
Creation of strong human capacity base will:Sustain the market and technology development,Support approaching the power generation targets, Cost reduction,Social dimensions.

Identified deficiencies
Public awareness to think greenInsufficient manpower to realize CSP projectsReliable and accurate solar resources data for project development purposesSkilled personnel to perform:
Project planningYield prognosisOperation and maintenance (O&M) of solar power plantsQuality Control of the power plant components
Optimization of optical efficiency of the collectorsOptimization of thermal efficiency of the power plant
13. Kölner Sonnenkolloquium Slide 5 www.dlr.de/enerMENA30. Juni 2010
Why is the quality control of a CSP power plant so important?
High investment costs of solar plants bear higher risks than conventional plants
Conventional Power Plant: Low Investment Costs, High Fuel Costs (Payments during the production phase)Solar Thermal Power Plant: High Investment Costs, No Fuel Costs (Investment at the beginning of the production phase)
A low-quality solar field affects project profitability strongly10-15% of solar field efficiency can be easily lost or gained
Solar fields are of big extentCorrection of assembly errors are expensive
Solar fields are a long-term investmentEach percent point contributes to profitability over more than 20 years
