The PMI Houston Chapter RTH Volunteer
Coordinator is Max Rodgers and can be
contacted at [email protected] or by
phone at (713) 855-867 by anyone
interested in participating in this program.
Max will work directly with crew leaders to
review the potential project homes,
evaluate crew skill levels and assist with
planning and organizing the work days.
Additional information about the VHRP can
be obtained by visiting the RTH website at
www.rebuildingtogetherhouston.org.
PMI Houston is once again partnering with
Rebuilding Together Houston (RTH) in their Volunteer
Home Repair Program (VHRP) this spring. Each year, in
April and October, hundreds of sponsored crews work for
two days (usually Saturdays) restoring the exteriors of
homes selected by RTH. Qualified homes receive critical
refurbishments as a result of this extraordinary
outpouring of compassion from the RTH volunteers. Each
sponsored VHRP crew (usually 20+ volunteers each) is
matched, according to skill level, with the degree of
difficulty of the home to be repaired. Repairs range from
scrape and paint to siding replacement, window repair,
energy efficiency upgrades, building handrails or
wheelchair ramps.
In order to qualify for the VHRP the homeowner must
be; the owner and occupant, age 62+, disabled or
veteran, income-qualified, resident of Houston or Harris
County, in a one story home and the home in need of
exterior painting. RTH has trained professionals that
screen and select qualified homes and directs volunteer
crews to the candidate homes. RTH provides a detailed
scope of work for the project including pictures, descriptions
and homeowner bio; access to a crew leader mentor; all
building-related materials such as paint, wood, siding and
doors; lists of recommended tools and supplies; Home
Repair Manual and training, as needed; access to city
facilities for waste disposal; all relevant permits; and RTH
staff available by phone during the project. The PMI
Houston volunteer crews will provide; a crew leader to
manage the on-site home repair project; 15 - 20 volunteers
(2-3 skilled volunteers usually needed) working 2 days;
paint brushes, ladders and all necessary tools; food, water,
trash bags, first aid kits, and other consumable items.
Back in December at the monthly chapter meetings we had
several members volunteer as crew leaders. These crew
leaders should be now soliciting volunteers for their crews,
evaluating their crew's skill sets and preparing for the crew
leader's meeting scheduled for Saturday, March 23, 2013.
Crew leaders will turn in their crew sign-up lists and be
provided their selected project home at the crew leader’s
meeting. The scheduled work days are April 6 and 13, 2013
with April 20, 2013 designated as a rainy day make-up day
if required. Crew volunteers are encouraged to bring in
members from their work project teams, church, or other
civic organization as this project is an excellent team
building experience. Additionally, PMI offers PDUs for
participating in this volunteer program
