IntroductionWe want to:

Arouse interest in Geography (of social studies) and National Education

(A) Supplement primary school sciences and going more in-depth for social studies to help them have an understanding of why Man study the environment and why is it so important to study about it (B) Supplement National Education teaching in primary school by fulfilling the purpose of National Education: Knowing the Singapore story -- how Singapore succeeded against the odds to become a nation; by understanding Singapore's unique challenges, constraints and vulnerabilities, which make us different from other countries

Raise awareness about going green through geography

What is geography? Study of Earth and its features, its

inhabitants, and its phenomena Comes from Greek words gê ("Earth")

and graphein ("to write"). It means "to write about the Earth“

2 Types: Physical and Human

Page 5: Project MFK Hwa Chong Institution

Physical Geography Plate tectonics: Theory of geology

(study of non living things that Earth is made of)

Explain motions of Earth’s surface

Page 6: Project MFK Hwa Chong Institution

Inside Earth Outermost part: Lithosphere and

Asthenosphere

Page 7: Project MFK Hwa Chong Institution

Lithosphere Broken up into many pieces called

plates

Convection Currents

Which is something like this…

D:Water is heated at bottom of container

A: This causes water to rise up

B: Upon reaching surface of container, it cools and spreads along the surface, eventually losing heat

C: Cooled water sinks down and the process continues

“Movement”

CONVECTION CURRENTS IN EARTH Heat from the Earth’s interior cause plates to

move The heat causes the rocks in the mantle to melt

and become magma When magma is heated, it expands, pushing the

plates away from each other. When it cools, it sinks and brings the plates towards each other

The constant rising and sinking of the magma results in the movement of plates over the Earth’s surface
