Talia Gonzalez Block 3 June 17, 2011 The Absolutely True Story of a Part‐Time Indian This book is about Arnold Spirit Jr., an Indian who lives on a reserve with all of the other Indians. He went to a school on the rez, with his best friend Rowdy, who could beat up any other kid and keep Arnold safe. On the first day of school, he got suspended because he threw his textbook at his teacher. Later on in the week, his teacher came by and convinced him that he shouldn’t stay at that school, because he will never amount to anything from staying there. Arnold listened to him, and decided to go to a school that was off the rez and was an all white school. His friend Rowdy got mad at him for leaving the school, punched him in the nose, and started hating him. At his new school, he was the only Indian, and was picked on. He ended up having a crush on a girl named Penelope. One day, he got beaten up by one of the bigger kids there, and he hit him back. That guy never touched him again. As time goes by, Arnold and Penelope develop a closer relationship. He tried out for basketball, and got into the Varsity team. He becomes one of the best players, and is seen as someone you would want to hangout with. He eventually had to go against Rowdy, and his old school, and got dirty looks from all of the Indians. Later on in the book, he is struck by tragedies ‐ his sister Mary, who eloped and moved to Montana, died in a fire, his dad's friend Eugene was shot in the face, and his grandmother was ran over by a drunk driver. At his grandmother’s funeral, all of the Indians, including
