The SLAG-REC project in a nutshell
Market need:Nowadays in the EU 60% of EAF slag is addressed to dumps (about 12 million t/year!), with strong environmental effects. All this slag quantity could be re-used in road constructions saving up the same quantity of natural resources (sand and gravel) which nowadays is extracted.

Launching and managing the project
Very important: All partners must have a common understanding of the project goals and activities. Use the kick-off meeting not only to discuss the technical to-do’s but also to: - clear the last doubts of any kind- define the internal monitoring procedure
(schedule of short internal progress reports)
Eco-Innovation European Info Day - Brussels, 13 April 2010
Launching and managing the project (cont…)
Use the kick-off meeting also to: - define the internal communication rules and practices- ensure everyone has read and understood the project and their exact role- get everyone tuned on the common objectives

Daily coordination
Good project coordination includes:- keep regular internal monitoring to ensure everybody is working on their tasks and to discover eventual problems asap;- send out regular reminders on upcoming deadlines well in advance;- discuss and confirm well in advance dates and venues for all meetings;
Eco-Innovation European Info Day - Brussels, 13 April 2010
Daily coordination (cont…)
- confirm the expected contribution from partners (e.g. during the meetings);- communicate regularly about project develop-ments (e.g. partners have to inform the consortium members about their dissemination activities);- monitor regularly the performance indicators and check if the project is on the right track.

Delivering results and maximising the impact
Make sure the project results will really reach the target groups:- keep your marketing and disseminating strategy flexible and actualise them if necessary;- the project website is important but it is a passive tool, not enough;
Eco-Innovation European Info Day - Brussels, 13 April 2010
Delivering results (cont…)
- include active market approaching tools in your market uptake strategy (e.g. direct mails to target group representatives with tailor-made information, a business model to calculate payback in different circumstances, etc.);
Eco-Innovation European Info Day - Brussels, 13 April 2010
Delivering results (cont…)
- identify carefully the decision-making persons to ensure your information will be really evaluated;- the EACI gives your project additional visibility via its project databases, publications, etc.

- Difficulties in slag managements by steelwork;- Increasing the price of slag disposal;- More restrective legislation.
We are developing a marketing plan combining different scenarios with these assumptions

Experiences with the EACI
• Positive, both during the application and negotiation phases• Make good use of the pre-proposal service!• Clear definition of program priorities and supporting material on the program website are of good help
Eco-Innovation European Info Day - Brussels, 13 April 2010
Experiences with the EACI (cont…)
• Brochure of selected projects is also very useful to understand the expected kind of actions• The project evaluation report is very constructive and provides valuable suggestions for improvement
Eco-Innovation European Info Day - Brussels, 13 April 2010
Experiences with the EACI (cont…)
• The contract negotiation process helps to improve the quality of the project: the more coherent your project is, the less problems will occur during its implementation!
