The Oaksmere Hotel

Brome, Suffolk

The Oaksmere Hotel recently underwent an extensive rejuvenation for which they requested the assistance of Roofglaze in the design and installation of Bespoke glazing.

Due to the specified project parameters given by The Oaksmere, it became apparent that a Solis Skylight System would best fit their glazing needs. This decision can mainly be attributed to the flexibility that the Solis Skylight system affords over other availble Systems throughout a variety of different products.

The first of the three rooflights to be installed, was a Ridgelight which runs through the middle of the main entrance to the hotel.

Due to the building specifications, the first Ridgelight was designed to have; a span of 2,500mm, a length of 12,000mm and a glazing thickness of 32mm. The Ridgelight was set at a 25o angle with the intention of making the most out of the available natural light within the lobby.

Situated in the heart of Suffolk, The Oaksmere Hotel has gained a reputation with its guests, and locals alike, for offering an outstanding level of service combined with picturesque scenic views.

Guests of The Oaksmere are greeted with relaxing accommodation, chic bars, fine dining and a botanical garden for their enjoyment. All this culminating into creating the perfect experience for their guests.

For this project, Roofglaze and the Architects at Roberts Molloy Associates worked in collaboration to design and install three Solis rooflights in conjunction with The Oaksmere's recent rejuvenation.

Some of the associated benefits of a Solis Skylight System include:- U-values and G-values to suit individual project requirements- Extruded aluminium framework with an integrated water management system - A wide range of glazing options

- Self-supporting systems up to 8 metre spans (depending on specification)- Provides a cost-effective solution to your glazing needs

This too was set at a 25o angle to facilitate the maximum daylight ingress from the installation.

The Pyramid Rooflight installed into the remaining half of the restaurant was designed to be 4,200mm across each side, accumulating into a total glazed area of approximately 18,000mm.

All three glazing systems supplied by Roofglaze are designed to be able to

withstand a wind load of 640 n/m2 and a snow load of 750 n/m2, this ensures the longevity of our rooflights against the elements.

As all three of the glazing systems were installed into areas that are used regularly by customers, a key requirement was to ensure that a comfortable and safe environment is created for the rooms users.

To facilitate this for The Oaksmere, the following glazing specification were included into their designs:

- Non-fragile- Light Transmission: 64%- G-value: 0.36- Centre Pane U-value: 1.0 W/m2K- Overall System U-value: 1.8 W/m2K- Wind load 640 N/m2

- Snow load 750 N/m2

“We and our client were both impressed with the overall performance of Roofglaze throughout our collaboration at The Oaksmere Hotel.

Their installation team was professional and worked promptly to finish the job. The rooflights installed look great and we would definitely recommend Roofglaze for future projects”

Despite the complexity of this project due to the multiple glazing systems required, Roofglaze took only 8 days to finish the installation for The Oaksmere.

Upon completion of this project the feedback Roofglaze received was that the rooflights installed helped to make the rooms feel larger and more welcoming for guests.

The remaining two rooflights installed were incorporated into the newly-built restaurant, with a second Ridgelight and a Pyramid Rooflight chosen as the ideal daylighting systems here.

The second Ridgelight installed was smaller, measuring; 2,400mm across, with a length of 4,200mm and the same glazing thickness as the first Ridgelight.

The finished project leaves a lasting effect on all who stay at The Oaksmere.

The glass specification used on this project includes:

Outer: 6mm Pilkington's Suncool 66/33 (high performance solar controlled)Cavity: 16mm Argon filled Inner: 9.5mm Laminated
