Project Based LearningYear 1
Key Question for the week: How can we create a sturdy
raft that stays afloat?
What do the words sturdy and afloat
mean?
We call words that have the same or similar meanings synonyms.

Things to look out for when listening to the story:
-What materials make up the pirate ship?
-Does the pirate ship face any dangers?
Talk Time
Do you think it is a
sturdy pirate ship?
Why? How do you
know this?We will list some of our
ideas down.
Task 1
• Can you draw your very own
Pirate ship? What do you think
it should look like based on
what you already know and
have discussed.
Task 2
• Can you create your pirate
ship using Lego or other
construction materials?
Task 3
• Can you create your pirate
ship using junk modeling?
Think about what sorts of
materials you could use?

Day 2: Starter
Things to look out for when listening to the story:
-What materials did they use to try and make their boat?
- What happened to the some of the objects when they placed it in the water?

Let’s watch and find out...
The Gingerbread Man needs our help. We need to create a raft for the ginger bread man.
• Can we use our knowledge of materials and pirate ships to
help construct this raft?
Talk Time
What will you
consider when
making your raft?
You need to make sure your raft is waterproof. What does waterproofmean?
Task 1
• If you are at school you will observe your
teacher complete an experiment by placing
different objects in a bowl of water. What do
you think will happen to them?
• You can do the same experiment at home with
an adult. Remember to make a predictions
first.
• Consider how the shape of an object may
affect whether it sinks or not even if the
material is the same.
Task 2
• You are going to research other materials that float and sink.
• If you are at home- Use the internet safely and responsibly with an adult.
• Once you’ve done this, I want you to consider which materials would be useful for a raft and why. Think about why some of the materials that do float, may not be ideal for making a boat. I.e a feather.
• You will be recording your findings on a table. (See next slide)

Talk Time
• What did you learn about
the different kinds of boats?
• What was different and the
same about them?
Task 1
We are going to
design a raft.
Task 2
• Now, you will be creating your rafts!
What materials will you be using?
• Remember to draw and add your
Gingerbread Man to your raft.
•You will be testing your rafts at home.
•Once you have attached your gingerbread man to your raft, place
the raft in a tub of water and move the raft around.
•Please ask an adult at home to help you with this. When you
come into school tomorrow you can tell us if it stayed afloat or if it
sunk.
Test it
Talk Time
Day 4: Starter
Compare your design to a partner’s. How is your design the same, and how is it different?
Do you think your raft would still float with a real gingerbread cookie on it?
SHARING TIME:
• If you are in school you are going to share your raft with the
class and teacher and talk about the materials you have used
to make it.
• If you are at home you can share your raft on class DOJO so
the teachers can see your fantastic work.
