ScenarioYou are an ICT officer in the business, Qwerty which is a marketing firm. Your lecturer will roleplay as the manager/client.

Qwerty has a team of highly professional staff that create marketing content for various businesses to help them get their name out into the wild.

Qwerty currently has a small team of 6 employees including yourself and only have a small amount of ICT equipment in place. There are 6 computers, a network printer, an ADSL router and a generic 16x port switch.

A common trend that Qwerty has identified, is the need for content to be accessible on different operating system platforms: MS Windows, Linux, mobile (iOS, Android, Microsoft Windows).

As the business is looking at expanding in the near future (more employees and computers), there is a need to create a standard operating environment that can be deployed to all computers (current and future).

At the present, employees are very comfortable with using Windows and are unsure about Linux. You are responsible in helping the staff to get a feel for Linux and to demonstrate that Linux and Windows can both behave very similar to each other.

A new MS Windows 10 and Linux operating environment will be required to be installed and configured which will represent the standard operating environment for when new computers are added to the business network.

All software applications need to be consistent between both Windows and Linux to ensure all employees won’t get confused and to help to reduce the learning curve. This is also helpful in managing all computers in the network if they are running the same software packages.

There are pre-made and pre-configured MS Windows Server 2012 and Windows-10-Old systems that you will need to use for this assessment. These two systems represent the current Qwerty’s operating environment.

Pre-existing computer systems details: Hostname: SRV1 Static IP Address: 192.168.50.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.50.1 Preferred DNS: 192.168.50.2 Hosting a website and FTP site: www.Qwerty.com Hosting an email system: mail.Qwerty.com Local account: administrator

Throughout this assessment all server work is to be done in a workgroup. There is NO Active Directory requirements.

All preconfigured passwords on both systems are: P@ssw0rd

Important: While working in the command line environment, do NOT close the window as you will be required to identify what commands you had used in Part 4 of the assessment: configurational and/or testing purposes.

If the computer needs to be powered off and hence the command line closed, make sure you take screenshots of any commands you used up to that point.

Upon reloading your assessment environment, you can continue with the tasks as needed with screenshots of any future used commands.

Linux has is more lenient when it comes to remembering all typed commands even

All testing should be documented on the Appendix 1: Testing Results Table.

All work should be done on the Old Windows 10, Linux and minor things on the Server 2012.

The Linux distribution is up to the student (Ubuntu/Fedora).

Part 1 – Desktop Preparation (Linux) (ICTNWK408 1)Planning

1. By using the Windows-10-Old PC you need to check the local intranet website for the WHS information that you must follow to ensure you are complying with safety measures. Confirm what WHS processes you will be following while undertaking this assessment.

2. Verbally and document a request with your manager about seeking what desktop applications and features are required to be implemented on the new PC installations. Take notes of the conversation with the use of bullet points.

3. Linux is required to be installed with the filesystem type of ext4. How is this different to ext3 and BtrFS?

4. How would Linux be installed in Qwerty’s network? What installation methods are available?

5. Identify the recommended system requirements that Linux needs to be able to run smoothly.

6. Qwerty is looking towards obtaining licensing for their Linux PCs. Summarise what License your Linux distribution uses or follows.

Data Migration1. Data is needed to be migrated from the old Windows 10 PC to a brand-new install. Check what

applications/user data exists old the old PC.

2. To migrate the data between the old and new PC you will need to look into what migration tool will be appropriate (e.g. Grsync, manually copying files across).

3. Conduct a backup of the old data with your migration method of choice.

4. Verbally and document a request with the manager for a potential timeframe needed to install and configure the new OS environment.

either during the installation of Linux or after Linux has been installed with the use of gparted.)e) Ethernet network connection to access the pre-existing Qwerty networkf) The user account: Joe with the password: P@ssw0rd

Software Installation

1. Install all the required software applications based on Part 1: Desktop Preparation: Planning – Q2.

2. Install all the required hardware drivers to ensure system compatibility and improve the systems performance.

3. Adjust your networking settings to ensure the new Linux can connect to the Server 2012 and old Windows 10 PC. Test this by using the different network troubleshooting tools (e.g. ping).

4. Change the computer name to: Linux-SOE (Linux - Standard Operating Environment).

5. Update the new Linux OS with updates and patches. Download and install all required system updates and package updates. Adjust your network settings as required to connect to the Internet. (Make sure you attach the proxy settings for the local repo servers if required.)

6. Restore the data migration using your migration method from Part 1: Desktop Preparation: Data Migration – Q3.

7. Test that all the data was migrated successfully.

Part 5 – Desktop Security (Linux) (ICTNWK408 5)

Qwerty is pushing for a secure work network where staff will need to comply with industry best security practices. As this is a small business, simple measures will need to be configured and implemented that should not negatively affect the staff’s ability to operate in their day-to-day work duties.

Password Policy

The security policies will need to be adhered for the new Linux PC. Refer to the Password Policy on the local Intranet in the Policies file repository.

1) Modify the local policy with the use of chage on the new Linux with the Password Rules details specified.

2) Force all users to change their passwords upon their next logon to the system.

3) Change the password for all of the local accounts to ensure they comply with the Password Policy.

Logon Legal Notice

Qwerty is looking at having an AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) that will appear upon every logon to the computers.

1) Create a logon message that will display the AUP rules from the Workstation Policy and ICT Guidelines document which will force all users to accept when they try to logon to the computers.

File Sharing (Samba)

To control which users are able to access any of the network shared folders, users must connect while using their account details.

1) Ensure password-protected sharing is enabled that will force all users to enter their account credentials when accessing any of the shared folders.

Application Security

The business is concerned about personal security and privacy and is enforcing passwords are not to be remembered in any application. This has come about where some employees had walked away from their computers without locking or logging out of their workstation and other employees had snooped around on their system.

1) Adjust the settings in the web browsers and email client software to ensure no passwords are saved.

Part 6 – Desktop Troubleshooting (Linux) (ICTNWK408 6)Troubleshooting

To ensure the new system is ready to be rolled out, you will need to ensure the system’s functionality has met all the necessary requirements. To achieve this, diagnostic and troubleshooting information will be monitored to ensure the system is performing as well as it should be.

Preventive maintenance features will be required to be enabled to help prevent any future desktop computing problems.

1. Confirm all required hardware drivers and software applications have been installed correctly.

2. Check System Logs (syslog) to check if there are any errors. If any errors are present, what are some of these?

3. If no warning or failures are present, answer the following report details: (This only needs to be answered if no errors were detected by the student for the above task 2)

a. Linux was not properly shut downb. A software package failed to install through the system package manager

4. By using the System Monitor, which process is consuming the most amount of %CPU and Memory and their values.

5. Include a screenshot of the Resources window showing the CPU, Memory and Network Histories. Do you feel there are any problems with any of these charts?

6. Conduct a backup of the system using the included backup utility and store this to the /Shared/backups folder (create this backups folder).

Documentation Qwerty’s organisational policy states that all desktop systems need to have their installed hardware and software recorded for insurance and copyright purposes. Using the following template, document the installation and configuration information for Linux-SOE
