I’m not so sure about the colour of the writing though. 2. http://popsop.com/wp-content/uploads/schweppes_fluorescent_cans_01.jpg I quite like the use of white for the background in these soda cans. I think it very visually appealing and the matching coloured ring pulls make it even nicer. To me, the nicest ones are the green and black, although I don’t agree that lemon should be green. I think the white also allows you to make a range of flavours as it is a colour that goes with anything.

Design Report

The Design Brief:

Using the techniques of polygon modelling, texture mapping and digital imaging; design an energy drink can and present the design in the form of an advertisement.

Limitations: The “can” model is to be produced in 3D Studio by following a modelling guide.

A series of sketches of a range of “logos” and “labels” should be developed with a final “label” design produced using neat pencil sketching.

The appearance of your “energy drink can” will attempt to simulate the visual texture and appearance of aluminium.

Create a unified whole to your completed drink can label and advertisement design by using a particular colour scheme.

The “label” of your energy drink can be created using Photoshop and/or Illustrator and will contain typical information seen on an energy drink.

The advertisement will contain a slogan and a supporting tag line.

An A4 print of your completed advertisement will be produced.

Background Research:

1. http://productnutrition.thecoca-colacompany.com/products/fanta-orange I have always liked the writing used on this can. I also like the green and orange used. I think they are bright colours that would attract people and make them want to buy it. I’m not so sure about the colour of the writing though.

Again, I like the white background and the coloured top. I think the bright colours look good on white, but could look just as good on black. 4.http://www.dionlabel.com/tl_files/dion/images/Dion%20Blog%20Images%202/pepsi_cola_throwback_new_03062009.jpg I think the writing and the colours used on this can are interesting.

5. http://lovelypackage.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/go2.jpg With these cans, I really like the black. I think it goes well with the other colours. I especially like the yellow. 6. http://www.looks.gd/media/CreativePackageDesign_13.jpg I think the way they’ve written the name on this can is great. It is quite a plain design but I really like how they’ve incorporated the wink face into the name. It’s different but very interesting.

Design Development

So I came up with a lot of ideas for what my brand could be and what it would look like. Some of the names I came up with that I considered using were Zest, Verve, Vitality and Navitus Potus which is Latin for energy drink; my decision for a name came down to which one would be the easiest to create a slogan for and which one would sell the best. Here are my concept sketches:

Idea 1: Idea 2:

Idea 3: Idea 4:

After this I decided that I liked idea 2 and thought it’d be a good design to work with as it suited the concept of an energy drink so I came up with more ideas related to this design and managed to

come up with 2 ideas from that including a more defined version of the original. These are the sketches:

Idea 1 (as a can): Idea 2 (as a can):

Idea 1 (as a label): Idea 2 (as a label):

In the end I decided to work with Idea 2 as it was what I thought of to begin with and I felt also showed a little bit of my personality because I like to see bright colours in designs and the idea of the blocks was really based on the idea of pixel based images and the fact that I quite like that kind of image especially in games.

Production:

Modelling of can:

The image above shows the can before the ring pull was added. I created it in 3ds Max, an Autodesk program which was great for what I was doing. As you can see in the picture on the right, there are a lot of options for you to choose from to make things such as this can. I used range of polygons to create this, for example I started with a cylinder which you can see is an option and basically manipulated it using tools like bevelling and extruding to change it into the shape of a can. The ring pull can be seen in the finished image of the can below and was created separately using the same techniques then simply moved to sit on top.

Creation of label:

The image above is of the scan of my sketch in Adobe Photoshop which I used to help create the label. It helped me to define where to place everything. Although I didn’t follow this exactly, it helped a lot.

These images show the creation process of the can label and the use of layers to help separate parts of the label; for example the design on the back of the can (the left side) was a separate layer to the design on the front. Each colour was also in separate layers and so was the text. The picture on the right shows each of these layers and by simply clicking on the eye icon, I was able to make different parts of the design visible or hidden. The program used to create the label was Adobe Illustrator.

Applying the Label to the Can:

The image above shows the process of applying the label to the can and adding cameras and lights to create a good image for the final render. This is the same program used to create the can itself. As you can see I changed the colour of the can to silver and wrapped the label around the can.

Adding Water Droplets and Condensation:

In this image you can see the finished result of adding water droplets and condensation to the can. Although it isn’t that clear in the image, it looks like blue blobs, the finished result of the water droplets and the condensation is quite visible and looks quite realistic and really adds to the look of the can.

Final Product:

The image to the right shows 3 views of the can. This image is purely to show off all aspects and details of the can without having to go into 3ds Max and move the view of the object. I chose to place the cans like this because I thought it worked well and managed to show off even the little things I included to improve the look of the can.

The image to the left is a sketch of how I thought I would make my advertisement look. As you can see from looking at the image below, it isn’t exactly the same as the ad but it follows the same principle, focusing on the fact that it is supposed to be “explosive energy”.

The image to the right is the finished product in an advertisement. The process of doing this was completed in Adobe Photoshop and involved mostly just a lot of copy and pasting and editing of elements to create the effects of the blocks exploding from the can.

Evaluation:

Throughout the process of creating this can I used techniques such as polygon modelling, texture mapping and digital imaging. I feel that I was quite thorough as I created a can in 3d Studio by following the guides and taking it slowly so I didn’t leave anything out. I also created a large number of sketches and ideas for what sort of drink it would be, different ideas for cans, different variations of my idea and the advertisement. I also researched cans other people and companies have created to help me come up with my own. I felt that it simulated the appearance of an aluminium can quite well and I was quite happy with the finished product which was the advertisement. I don’t feel that I came across many problems whilst making my can but I did encounter the issue of finding a font that I felt suited my brand. I wanted something that followed the concept of block or pixel images but still had some form of flow to it; I solved this issue by continuing to look and eventually I settled on two fonts called ‘Shaky Hands Some Comic’ and ‘Earth’s Mightiest’ which I am quite happy with. Through the process of making this can I have learned how to use a range of new software that I had never used before including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Autodesk 3ds Max which I think would come in handy in any field of work. A part of my work that I felt was good would is the fact to me, it wasn’t really most energy drinks that you see for sale, it was bright and colourful which is something I like to see if I’m buying a product such as a drink as it draws my attention more than something with dark and dreary colours. Something I felt could be improved were the name and the slogan. I felt ‘zest’ was a little clichéd and I could have come up with something better, and my slogan I felt was a little boring and it would have been nice to have something funny as humour appeals to everybody. It may have also been better if I’d included a backstory as it is sometimes nice to see what companies come up with. Overall though I am quite happy with what I have created.
