INTRODUCTION

Control Panel window Allows you to change the properties of an object and

customize the Windows XP environment

You must have Administrative privileges if your computer is connected to a network.

Administrative privileges are granted to all users who have an administrator account and temporarily to other users when they obtain permission.

OPENING THE CONTROL PANEL WINDOW

Use the Control Panel to change an object’s properties.

Click the Start button and then click Control Panel on the Start menu

Then click a category in the Control Panel window.

PICK CONTROL PANEL ICON

Pick a Control Panel icons include: Game Controllers icon – allows you to add, remove, and configure

game controller hardware, such as gamepads and joysticks Keyboard icon – allows you to customize the keyboard settings, such

as the cursor blinking rate and the character repeat rate Mouse icon – allows you to customize the mouse settings, such as

the button configuration, double-click speed, mouse pointer, and motion speed

Phone and Modem Options icon – allows you to configure your telephone dialing rules and modem settings

Printers and Faxes icon – allows you to view a list of installed printers and fax printers and add new printers

Scanners and Cameras icon – allows you to add, remove, and configure scanners and cameras.

CLASSIC VIEW CATEGORY VIEW

Category View – there are 10 categories that display in the right pane of the window

Classic View – was common in previous versions of the Windows Operating System. Displays individual Control Panel icons instead of categories.

Click Switch to Classic View or Switch to Category View in the Control Panel Area

Keyboard Properties Dialog Box Speed Sheet

Keyboard Repeat Delay – is the amount of time that elapses between holding down a key on the keyboard and seeing the character repeated across the screen

Set the Keyboard Repeat Delay by using the Repeat Delay slider and text box in the Keyboard properties dialog box. Dragging to the left lengthens delay Dragging to the right shortens the delay Text box is used to test any adjustments.

Keyboard Repeat Rate – is the speed at which a character repeats across the screen when you press and hold down a key on the keyboard.

Set the Keyboard Repeat Rate by using the Repeat relay slider and text box in the Keyboard properties dialog box. Dragging to the left decreases the repeat rate Dragging to the right increases the repeat rate Text box is used to test any adjustments.

Cursor Blink Rate – is the speed at which the cursor (insertion point) blinks Makes it easier to see the insertion point on the desktop

Set the cursor blink rate by using the cursor blink rate slider and a blinking cursor in the Cursor blink rate area Dragging to the left decreases the cursor blink rate Dragging to the right increases the cursor blink rate Dragging to the left end of the slide stops the cursor from

blinking

The Hardware sheet allows you to view the keyboard devices attached to the computer and their properties and to troubleshoot these devices.

Changing the Mouse Button Configuration Click the Mouse icon in the Printers and Other Hardware window.

Mouse Properties Dialog BoxButton Sheet

Right-handed button configuration assigns the mouse operations of selecting and dragging to the left mouse button and the mouse operations of right-clicking and right-dragging to the right mouse button.

Left-handed button configuration assigns the mouse operations of selecting and dragging to the right mouse button and the mouse operations of right-clicking and right-dragging to the left mouse button.

The Double-click speed determines if Windows XP recognizes clicking the mouse button twice as a double-click or two single clicks. Move the slider to the right increases the time interval

between clicks. Move the slider to the left decreases the time interval

between clicks. Test area is used to test any adjustments.

ClickLock feature allows you to lock a mouse button and select or drag text without continuously holding down the mouse button

Pointer sheet allows you to change the mouse pointer scheme.

The following are determined by the Mouse Pointer Scheme Desktop (block arrow) Wait of operation to complete (hourglass) Point to border or corner of a window (two-headed arrow) Enter text in word processor (I-beam) Draw in a graphics program (pencil)

Click the Pointers tab in the Mouse Properties dialog box

Mouse Properties Dialog BoxPointer Options Sheet

Pointer Options sheet allows you to adjust the pointer speed , turn on Snap To, display pointer trails, hide the mouse pointer while typing, and show the location of the mouse pointer when the CTRL key is pressed

The pointer speed is the speed at which the mouse pointer travels across the desktop when you move the mouse across a flat surface

Click the Pointer Options tab in the Mouse Properties dialog box. Dragging to the left decreases the speed Dragging to the right increases the speed

Settings are immediately change. Do NOT have to click the apply button.

Enhanced Pointer Precision check box – gives you more control over the pointer when moving small distances on the screen and provides quicker deceleration of the pointer when you slow down or stop the mouse.

The Snap to feature allows the mouse pointer to automatically move to the default command button when a dialog box displays.

Displaying Pointer Trails improves the visibility of the mouse pointer on the desktop as you move the mouse.

Click Display pointer trails in the Visibility area

Display a pointer trail Trail of mouse pointers Hide pointers while typing - allows you to hide the mouse

pointer when you begin to type and display the mouse pointer when you move the mouse.

Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key - allow you to press the CTRL key to display the position of the mouse pointer on the desktop.

The wheel sheet will not display if your mouse does not have mouse wheel,

ACCESSIBILITY FEATURES

Accessibility wizard – allows you to select the best setting for your use (change the font size, switch to a lower screen resolution, use Microsoft Magnifier, and disable personalized menus) permits you to specify your impairments (mobility, hearing, or visual) and then turns on the appropriate options.

Magnifier – makes the screen more readable

Narrator – is a text-to-speech program

On-Screen Keyboard – displays a virtual keyboard on the desktop

Utility Manager – allow users to schedule operations such as launching the magnifier, narrator, and on screen keyboard

Customizing for People with Physical Challenges Accessibility features Mobility impaired people can use MouseKeys Hearing impaired people can have Sound Sentry

Sound Sentry generates visual warnings when the computer makes a sound

ShowSounds causes an application program to display captions when a program speaks or makes sounds

Visually impaired people can have High Contrast High Contrast changes the desktop color scheme to the

High Contrast Black (Large) Color scheme.

MouseKeys allows you to use the numeric keypad to move the mouse pointer, click, double-click, and drag. 2, 4, 6, or 8 moves the mouse pointer down, left, right, or up 1, 3, 7, or 9 moves the mouse pointer diagonally down and to

the left, down and to the right, up and to the left, or up and to the right

5 selects the object to which the mouse pointer points

The high contrast feature changes the desktop color scheme to the High Contrast Black (large) color scheme. Increases the size of the text on the desktop improving the ability to read the text.

Daylight Saving Time (DST) – is a one hour time adjustment made in the United States in the spring and fall to provide more usable hours of daylight for outdoor activities in the late afternoon and evening. (Spring forward, Fall back)

INTERNET TIME SHEET Internet Time Sheet contains settings to

synchronize automatically the time and date on the computer with the time and date on the Internet time server using the time.windows.com Web page

Synchronization occurs weekly if you have a continuous Internet connection

REGIONAL AND LANGUAGE OPTIONS DIALOG BOX

The regional setting determines the manner in which numbers, currency, date, and time display on the desktop and on printed documents English (United States) setting – is the default setting

for a computer manufactured and sold in the United States.

Click Change the format of numbers, dates, and times in the Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options window

Connect the hardware first, according to manufacturer’s instructions

Adding a Printer

Local printer – is a printer directly attached to the computer.

Network printer – is a printer attached to another computer or directly to the network

Newer printers are usually supported by Plug and Play

Add printer wizard – must have administrator privileges, know the port to use to connect the printer, and decide whether the printer is the default printer

Port – is a socket on the back of the computer used to connect a hardware device to the system unit

LPT1 printer port – is used to connect a printer to the system unit

Default printer - is the printer to which all printed documents are sent

Interrupt request (IRQ) – is a signal that indicates the transmissions of data between computer memory and a hardware device is complete

Microsoft Management Console (MMC) – contains tools you can use to administer networks, computers, services, and other system components

Computer Management tool – allows you to manage local and remote computers and contains the System Tools, Storage, and Services and Applications items
