Project 13 Keeping memories alive is so important and while, in the past, items may have been tucked away in drawers, people are becoming more switched on to memorabilia being attractive pieces of decorative art as well as a respectful way of keeping memories alive. Careful choices of design, colour and proportion can give the past a contemporary feel, even making it suitable for a modern environment. In this project planning is all: spending time at that stage of a project, considering the 3D necessities and the various proportions / weightings of borders, layer by layer make the execution of the project so much easier. Knowing exactly what to do at each layer means that you can even treat it as a series of mini projects all housed in one frame. The choice of black was partly to add a bit of gravitas to the grouping but it also shows off the strong colours of the medal ribbon and the golds of the badge. The unifying triple mount takes the colour choice from the medal ribbon Project 13 uses: Moulding: Deep Rebate Moulding (rebate depth 27 + mm) Mount: Arqadia – Black, Black core, Football Red, Light Blue Spacer: 5 mm foam core, 3 mm foam core Glass: 2 mm float Tapes: PH70 hinging tape, masking tape; Eco Kraft tape; double sided tissue tape Hardware: d-rings; screws; 15 mm v-nails Sundries: bumper pads; hanging cord; needle & thread; silicone adhesive Relevant courses: Basics of Framing: frame construction; mount cutting Mount Cutting & Decoration: layered mount cutting; spacers; multiple aperture mounts 3D (Box Framing): spacers, sewing in Planning & Design 1. When planning this project, there are two stages: Glass size: this is similar to any multi-aperture piece. In this case I was able to print scanned copies of the photograph and of the post-card from POW camp. This means that the originals are safe and I can resize the images to make the grouping work. Depth behind the glass: this takes account of the make up and spacing of and between each of the layers and has a major impact on the list of materials needed. 2. GLASS SIZE. Remember that groupings work best where the majority of the outside edges of the group of apertures sit along (inside) a notional, rectangular perimeter. 3. Also remember that the design should be planned in mirror image as all markings and cutting will take place on the reverse of boards Never Forget Glass size width Glass size height In this diagram you can see a mirror image view of the plan. Add the various borders and apertures left to right for glass size width; bottom to top for glass size height
