    Indoor Boomerang

    Designed by:

    Ritchie Kinmont

    About this project:

The indoor boomerang is a great project for all ages, built from inexpensive and easy tofind materials. Patterns for Boys and Girls are provided for both right and left handedboomerang pilots. With a little practice, youll be able to throw and catch yourboomerang in an average sized room. Younger kids may have difficulty throwing theboomerangs, but will enjoy watching them fly.

These Boomerangs are light weight and safe to fly indoors. My favorite isthe P-47, but the Flower Power boomerang is a close second.

Using a sharp pair of scissors, roughly cut out the

boomerang, leaving about around the printedpattern. (fig. B)

    Step 2

Choose the boomerang design you would like tomake. Boomerang patterns are provided forright and left handed pilots. Using an adhesivefull sheet label(8 1/2 x 11), print the pattern inan ink jet or laser printer. Be sure to print infull scale. (fig. A)

    Step

    fig.A

To get the best flying results from yourboomerang, choosing the correct cardboard isvery important. Select a flat piece of cardboard

from a cereal box or heavy poster board. Thethickness of this type of cardboard is just rightfor this design. Cut a piece about 10 x 10 andlay it on a flat surface. Carefully remove theadhesive backing from the pattern. Begin withthe tip of one wing, gently apply the pattern tothe cardboard, moving your fingers back andforth, working all the bubbles out. Work from thetip of the first wing to the center, then work

your way out to the next tip, then from thecenter out to the last wingtip. (fig.C)

I like small scissorsfor getting aroundtight corners.

Sticking the patterndown flat with nowrinkles takes a littlepiloting skill.

Use a work surface with a sharp edge, like a

counter top or desk top. Carefully align the aileronfold line with the edge of your work surface.

Holding the wing securely, crease the aileron alongthe fold line. Carefully bend the aileron down

about 20odegrees. Repeat for all three ailerons.(fig. F)

    Step 6

On all three wings, carefully cut on the aileroncut line, stopping at the fold line. (fig.E)

    Step 5

To make the final trim easier, roughly cutaround the boomerang leaving about extracardboard around the outside. Make the final

cut around the boomerang, cutting carefully onthe solid outside line. (fig.D)

    Step 4

    fig.D

Be sure the aileron isflat and bent down thesame amount all the wayacross.

Locate the Aileron Deflection Gauge pattern(see fig. A) and roughly cut out, leaving about around the gauge. Remove the backing and applyto a scrap piece of cardboard. Cut around thesolid line of the gauge. Place the gauge undereach wing to check for the proper aileron angle.Adjust the aileron angle to match the gauge asnecessary. (fig. G)

    Step 7

Check each wing for any twist. The wing must becompletely straight and flat. If you see any

twist in the wing, gently twist in the oppositedirection making small adjustments until the

    twist is gone.(fig. H)

    Step 8

Now check each wing to make sure it is notbowed up or down. Each wing should be flat andon the same plane with each other.(fig. I)

Hold the boomerang between your thumb and

index finger in you right hand with the printedside facing you. Bring your wrist back with the

boomerang almost touching you forearm, be sureit is vertical. You arm should also be cocked back

about even with the side of your head. This is yourtake-off position. (fig. 1 and 2)

    Step

    Flying Your Boomerang

Get ready for flying lessons! With alittle practice, youll be soloing beforeyou know it. These instructions are forright handed pilots. If you are lefthanded, you will need a left handedboomerang. Use the same flyingtechniques, but everything will beopposite.

Throwing your boomerang is a combination of a

throwing motion of your arm and a very quicksnapping motion with you wrist. The throwing

motion gives the boomerang some forwardmotion, and the wrist snap give the necessary

    rotation. (fig. 3)

    Step 2

Begin your throw slightly to the right, and yourboomerang will return from the left. With thecorrect amount of forward motion and spin, yourboomerang should fly in a circle about 8 to 10 indiameter. Although the boomerang starts itsflight vertically, as is progress around itscircular path, it will come back to you in ahorizontal orientation. The best way to catch itis to hold your hands apart horizontally, thenclose them together quickly, stopping theboomerangs flight. (fig. 4)

    Step 3

    fig.3

    point

    Direction of rotation

Remember that a good fastsnap is more important than ahard throw. The speed ofrotation is key to a goodBoomerang flight.

Just like learning to fly, throwing aboomerang requires some practice. Its worth it! Pretty soon youll bethrowing and catching like a pro!
