HIGHLIGHTSPakistan Reading Project:

UNICEF - Long Term Agreement (Year 3):

PRP - Balochistan: Under component I (Improved Classroom Learning Environment for Reading) the major activities performed in July included enhanc-ing Teachers competency through the Module “Print concept”. The teachers shared their experiences by performing their interim tasks and implemented newly learnt techniques of teaching reading and reading assessment at classroom level. Some of the mentors conducted volunteer visits to classrooms and facilitated teachers where needed. The active involvement of education officials indicated the gradual pace of sustainability and ownership of the project. The Reading Improvement Strategies (RIS) framework was also approved for further execution under component 2 (improved policies and systems

for reading) of the project.PRP - FATA: During the month of July, the establish-ment of Agency field offices was in progress in Mohmand and Bajaur agencies and coordination meetings were held with the field level education officials i.e. AEOs and AAEOs of both agencies. Rele-vant data was collected, including EMIS codes, student’s enrollment and details of teachers / head teachers etc. Consultative meetings were also held with the Political Administration of Mohmand and Bajaur agencies. Detailed presentations were made to the Additional PAs of both agencies on the objec-tives of the proposed PRP interventions and its expected positive impact on the students and teachers of the region.

IRM has been awarded Long Term Arrangement (LTA) once again by UNICEF Pakistan for the year 2017-19 to create an efficient system of training services required by all the sections of UNICEF through one window operation. IRM will organize and conduct training for the Communication Network (COMNet) field staff at district, union coun-cil and community levels.During the Month of July, the PDP team coordinated with UNICEF and prepared and submitted the budget for next roll out which includes 44 field events and one Training of Trainers (TOT) event in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and FATA.

HIGHLIGHTS

The IRM Summer Internship Programme (SIP) was launched once again in June, 2017. The purpose of this programme is to provide an opportunity to young and energetic university graduates to maxi-mize their potential through training and learning sessions. This six-week long internship programme is a distinctive learning experience that allows students to acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical field experience in research and other scholarly investigations. 11 Interns from various universities and fields of study graduated under SIP-2017.

During the month of July, 75 participants graduated in Tailor-ing, Balochi Embroidery and Motorcycle Repairing trades. The overall project aims to provide vocational trainings to 4,884 targeted beneficiaries of 26 UC (17 UC of Lasbela 70% and 09 UC of Gwadar 30%).

IRM has been certified once again by Pakistan Center for Philan-thropy (PCP) for meeting the desired standards and requirements in the areas of Internal Gover-nance, Financial Management and P r o g r a m m e Delivery. The certification has been renewed for the next three years.

The youth of Sindh are being provided with voca-tional skills training in different trades including Electrician, Auto CAD, and Motor cycle repairing under the six month long NAVTTC funded training programme at IRM Sindh. The current batch of 75 participants graduated in July 2017. IRM Sindh is also in discussion with NAVTTC for the introduction of new trades in the upcoming training cycle.IRM Sindh has recently signed “YES I DO” project with Plan International. The aim of this project is to provide vocational skills training to women of District Umar Kot and Sanghar. During the month of July, 16 participants graduated and the next event on Tailoring for 23 women will commence from 1st August, 2017. IRM Sindh has also initiated a three month training programme in collaboration with Research & Development Foundation (RDF). The aim of this programme is to provide Skill Develop-ment Training to youth and Market Driven Training to Women. During the month of June, 79 partici-pants were enrolled and will be graduating in Sep-tember 2017.IRM Sindh has also initiated the activities under the SEF funded Adolescent and Adult Learning and Training Program (AALTP). The AALTP aims to

provide accelerated formal primary education for vulnerable adolescents and basic functional literacy for adults together with a certified Skill Develop-ment / Vocational Training course for each learner so as to enable their socio economic growth. During the month of July, a project staff orientation event was conducted at the IRM Regional Office in Jams-horo. Furthermore, six AALTP centers have been established in Manjhand, Sewen Sharif, IRM Jamsho-ro Office, Digri, Mirpurkhas and Jhudoo with a target enrollment of 1200 adults and adolescents. IRM Sindh has currently enrolled 900 target beneficiaries and the remaining enrolment will be completed next month.The new phase of the Sustainable Livestock Development for Rural Sindh Project funded by JICA, has also been launched. Running in its fourth year, IRM will be implementing the series of capacity building training for 155 men and women staff of Sindh Livestock department, under Sustainable Livestock Development Project, to enhance the specialized theoretical and practical knowledge of the beneficiaries and develop and strengthen their capabilities for sustainability of resource manage-ment.

During the month of July, the Closing Ceremonies for the IBT (44 partici-pants) and LACIP (256 participants) projects were conducted by VTEC Azakhail Team.

Youth Economic Empowerment Project (YEEP), Chakwal:

YEEP Chakwal has entered its final year of phase II and under the project activities, 412 participants (Men: 172, Women: 240) successfully completed their technical training along with 38 youth with disability (Men: 22, Women: 16), as of June 2017. During the month of July, Meetings were held with PLAN Team regarding Addendum and extension of YEEP till November, 2017 and a revised Budget and Work Plan was submitted to PLAN Head Office.A new venture with Plan International is also under-way. The “Ride In Pink” project aims at giving young women/girls access to women friendly, quali-ty, safe and economical transport services through overcoming mobility barriers and also give them the skills to manage a women friendly transportation service. Pink Rickshaw and Carry vehicles will be introduced for the first time in Chakwal through which women will gain first-hand experience driv-ing carry vehicles (mini vans) providing them with a source of income. The business model is to establish

women managed transportation company/cooper-ative. Initially, a company will be established through technical backstopping of Plan country office and its partner organizations IRM & NRSP. An agreement is expected to be signed in the coming month.

The Government of Punjab and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) funded project, which was initiated in September 2014 in Districts Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Muzaffargarh and Rajanpur, has successfully completed its targets and has entered the last quarter before wrapping up in September 2017. SPPAP was designed to assist the Government to achieve its objectives of economic growth and poverty alleviation. Under Vocational Training Organization component of SPPAP, 7,233

men and 7,360 women have graduated from Sep-tember 2014 to June 2017 against a set target of 14,555. Meetings for a second extension from Octo-ber 2017 to September 2020 are currently under-way. Other activities during the month of July included coordination with SPPAP Project Director and team, preparation for P&D team visit for SPPAP Third Party Validation and follow up visits in the four target districts.
