Common Data Sources that are NOT Progress Monitoring
Data Collection FAQ
Question Answer
How often do I need to do this?
How do I do it?
Do I have to do it all?
Rotate children daily. Each child’s progress needs to be monitored weekly.
Depends on the goals. Most you can do via intentional observation. Some you will need to be at that center or activity.
Assistants can help, especially in goals you can observe (social skills, self help, etc. )
How are you currently using progress monitoring in your classroom?
How are you using it in decision making?

Measurable goals/outcomes Research-based tools
◦ Sensitive to increments of student growth◦ Efficient and effective for use in the classroom◦ Usable format
Data driven decision-making Systematic collection
Essential Elements of Progress Monitoring
You must have a plan to collect data used to document progress toward an annual goal that includes:◦ Procedure (how will you do it in your classroom?)◦ Criteria (is your annual goal so measurable that you know when a
child is making progress?)◦ Schedule (how often will you collect data?)◦ Organize (how will the data be organized for analysis?)
Planning to Progress Monitor
Keep a folder or notebook for each student. Use the Naturally Implemented Program Plan Individualized
Monitoring Form ◦ Have a tab for each month. You will complete one Naturally
Implemented Program Plan Individualized Monitoring Form per child per month. You can collect “work”, observations of play, pictures, etc. for the month in the tab as well.
◦ Observation is key. You will want to monitor about 3 children daily to make sure each child is monitored weekly.
How to Record and Maintain Data
Careful observation is the key to most progress monitoring.
Teachers should be playing with children in centers, embedding developmentally appropriate goals in daily routine and center explorations, and strategically observing children’s progress toward goals.
Observation is Key
Structured questioning for analyzing student progress◦ What patterns do the data reveal?◦ What might the data reveal about the student’s needs?◦ What adaptations may be needed to make the intervention more
effective?
