To all - The program Feb 2nd is on the current trend toward Mirrorless cameras. Bessie & I have made the transition and are enjoying the benefits of less weight to carry around. We chose Fuji, but there are many other brands out there.
Also - KEH is here to buy photographic equipment from you. Current club members may come between 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm on Feb 2
nd to reduce the conflict with our
regular meeting time.
Quick Pix - Check out the Quick Pix instructions. Must be submitted by Feb 1st.
Redlands Camera Club is 158 members strong - This includes those who have joined just to take one of our Photography Classes.
It is easy to sit back on a Monday night and say, “I’m too tired. I’ll attend next time.” And next time and next time and next time…. Well, the time is this Monday so let’s see every one there – standing room only!
Those new members currently taking a class are especially encouraged to attend a regular meeting. If time is limited while taking the class, try to squeeze in at least one regular session to see what we are all about.
Details for the current month’s programs may be found in the Programs article, starting page 2

Steve Oberholtzer We know what we are, but we know not what we may be. William Shakespeare.
Have you seen the tee shirt that says, “Bomb Technician- If you see me running, try to keep up”?
Keeping up with feature creep can be tough. Feature creep happens in all manufactured items. Do
you remember how barren the early Volkswagens were? Crank windows, no A/C, only AM radio.
The cheapest VW today is much, much safer and nicer than that early model. The same effect goes
on in cell phones, TVs and vacuums. We should not be surprised that it goes on in cameras and
photo editing software too. My vacuum is probably 20 years old. When it was new, I apparently
bought a 20 year supply of vacuum bags. Very soon now, I will be buying a replacement vacuum.
The point of this is that you can embrace change as much or as little as you would like. I like
changes in cameras that improve low light performance, make them easier to use, and easier to
understand. I don’t want a camera feature menu that is five layers deep. Because I don’t use my
camera every day of the week, I am not familiar with every obscure menu setting; I just want to
remember that there is something in there for this particular backlit situation, and know where to look
to find it. My camera is pretty good that way. And in truth, manufacturers at the same price point try
and provide the same features, but put their own flavor on naming them.
Photo editing software is not nearly as simple as a camera menu. I use the same brand of software
that I have used for the past 15 years because I am familiar with it. They may have made
improvements to how the software handles color depth, and the variety of tools available to make
selections, but I don’t care, I want the tools I am familiar with to be in the same spot on the toolbar,
and function in the way I am used to. Some of the images that have won best of show have only had
a few tools applied to them, but the cumulative effect was great. Learn what works for you, and apply
it.
The camera and the editing software are tools the image make uses to create an image. Do you
think anyone asked Michelangelo what brand of hammer and chisel he used to sculpt his statue of
David? Use the tools that work for you, don’t let the tools direct your work.
To all members’ night contributors, well done. And thanks to our commenters also.

Quick Pix – “Reflections” With the topic for our first February meeting being “Mirrorless Technology,” why not get back to Quick
Pix with the theme “Reflections”? This could be anything from a mirror image to a reflection in a
lake, or even a place to reflect on what your next competition entry might be. Be creative. Submit just
one image at no cost on our website to be shown at the beginning of the February 2 meeting.

We’ll try to use titles again this time, so be sure to include a good one, not just the file name. See the
Competition article, below, for hints on titling images.
The website form for Quick Pix will be available from January 26 until Sunday evening, February 1,
2015. The form will be coming down from the website early to avoid conflict with the entry form for the
Spring Competition which goes up on February 2.
Image One Camera and Video, “Mirrorless Technology Update”
Single lens reflex cameras have been around for a long time, as have the necessary mirrors and
prisms to get the through-the-lens image to our eyes. Wouldn’t it be great if we could eliminate that
heavy and noisy mirror and take the image right off the image sensor and present it on the back of
the camera or in the eyepiece? Oh, wait – that’s already been invented and adopted by some fine
professional photographers and not a few of our members. If you would like to know more about the
mirrorless technology that is becoming very popular in the photographic world, be sure to attend this
meeting. Robert Meeks from Image One Camera and Video in Riverside will visit to bring us up to
date on the latest in mirrorless technology.
Also on February 2nd, KEH will be there to buy your used gear. See KEH article, below.

Movie Night – “Finding Vivian Maier” One of the greatest street photographers of the 20th century is someone you’ve possibly never heard
of, Vivian Maier. She was a very private person who worked as a nanny, but spent her spare time
taking thousands of wonderful pictures on the streets of Chicago. She saved everything, and when
John Maloof discovered some 100,000 examples of her work at a storage locker sale, he knew he
had to learn more about her. Maloof went through the boxes of negatives and 8mm film she had
saved, and interviewed people she had known to produce the fascinating documentary, Finding
Vivian Maier. The film made a very short trip through Southern California theaters last year, and a few
of our members were lucky enough to get to see it, and highly recommended it. If you have an
interest in street photography you are sure to learn a lot from this movie to be shown at our February
16th meeting. To see some of Vivian’s work, visit www.vivianmaier.com
March Programs:

Bitsy Bernor
We are up and running with 158 members.
Please greet our newest member – Gary Jefferson
Gary attended a photo school for two years (many years ago) and has been a professional
photographer for a number of years. About 25 years ago he was active in the Pomona Camera Club.
He shot for Roma Stock in Burbank for about five years; however, did not make a living at it.
Gary has been an active poster on Facebook for about three years, and has met many new friends
there. Shooting with a Sony A7r, He says that he is looking forward to meeting other photographers
and participating in the field trips. Gary enjoys taking landscapes, wildlife, people and interesting
things along the way as he travels with his family.
Gary is retired, and enjoys traveling with his wife and five grown daughters. They travel about 35% of
the time, mostly by RV. In the last year they put about 30,000 miles on their vehicle traveling the US
and Canada. Bitsy
Wayne (Woody) Wood
Hi, Everybody,
Several members have requested that the various document downloads we have on our website be
put in one place. Check out the links on the menu bar at the top of every the page and you will see a
link titled "Downloads". All documents are available for download from this link. You will also see a
link to various camera instruction manuals. I will be placing new manuals in this link as I obtain them.
If you have a request for a model that is not on the site, please let me know and I will try to find it.
After several requests we now have a search engine on our website. It can be found on the far right
of the menu bar which is located at the top of every page. Please give it a try.
Surely there must be some members out there who have photography related videos on You Tube
or Vimeo? If so, send me the links and I will place them on our web site. I think some of our
members are getting tired of looking at mine! Woody

February 21st
– La Jolla
Thanks to those who came out for the Salton Sea field trip. We found a lot of new places and got
some very nice shots, even without a lot of bird photo opportunities, along with a great sunset for
those who stuck it out.
The next scheduled field trip for the club will be Saturday, February 21 in La Jolla. There are lots of
Seals and Pelicans in the area along with a lot of very scenic rock formations along the shoreline and
water. It is especially nice for sunset shots. Seals are often lying right on the beach so they are very
close. There are lots of restaurants nearby to grab lunch or dinner too. Anyone interested, contact me
for carpooling ([email protected]). I will most likely be planning on staying for sunset if conditions
are anywhere near good. Torey Pines State Reserve is also nearby. I am going to be watching the
weather conditions during February for any good, cloudy days along the coast and may be making a
trip out sooner if conditions are good.
That weekend, 19th-22nd, is also the 2015 Nature Photography Summit and Trade Show for NANPA,
North American Nature Photography Association in San Diego. They will be having lots of classes,
workshops and presentations which people can register for along with a portfolio review (also for a
cost). The Exhibit and Trade Show is free public entry on Saturday the 21st with lots of vendors and
sponsors represented. You can get more information at their web site nanpa.org. So, if people are
interested, they could go to the Trade Show in the morning then over to La Jolla afterwards for
photos.
Other suggestions for February: For those who might be interested in Civil War re-enactments,
there are two locations during February that will be holding them, Calico Ghost Town on February 14-
16 from 9-5 and Strathearn Museum Civil War Encampment in Simi Valley on February 21-22, 10-4
on Saturday and 10-3 on Sunday. Both stage battle re-enactments during the day and have
encampments which you can visit to see the living conditions of that time period.
Planning ahead: March is usually a good time for photos at Descanso Gardens in La Canada.
Thousands of tulips are blooming along with lots of other plants. That is the plan for the March field
trip at this point. I usually call to make sure they are blooming before going out. Rick

Regular Club Meeting Jerry Reece
Club members, friends and guests again have an opportunity to sell their unused photographic
equipment taking up valuable storage space at home or office. KEH will be at our Feb 2nd regular
club meeting early from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Club members will have priority from 5:00 pm to 7:00
pm. So come early so as to lessen the interference with your enjoyment of the regular program.
Remember photographic stuff only. The plaid bow tie your mother-in-law gave you for Christmas will
not be considered for purchase.

Additional Classes in Photography
The club’s educational program is in full swing. Here are the upcoming courses:
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom - beginning Tuesday, Feb. 17
While it is not a complete image editing program, Lightroom offers extensive capabilities to manage,
access and optimize digital photographs. It is often used in conjunction with Adobe Photoshop or
other image editing software, and can bring greater efficiency to the user’s workflow. This one comes
up soon, and there are plenty of seats still available. Register now by clicking here to assure your
place in the class!
Tuition is $60. Class sessions are held from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Redlands First United Methodist
Church, 1 E. Olive Ave. Additional meetings of this class will be Feb. 24, Mar. 3, 10, 17 and 24.
Advanced Image Editing - beginning Tuesday, Mar. 31
For students using either Adobe Photoshop Elements or Adobe Photoshop software. In addition to
more advanced capabilities of the Adobe software, third-party plugins will be surveyed.
Tuition is $60. Class sessions are held from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Redlands First United Methodist
Church, 1 E. Olive Ave. Additional meetings of this class will be Apr. 7, 14, 21, 28 and May 5.
Field Photographic Techniques - beginning Tuesday, May 12 at 6:00 p.m.
This course consists of an introductory classroom meeting and 4 field shooting sessions, each of
which is followed by a classroom critique of that week’s student photographs. Field sessions will be in
photogenic locations in and around Redlands, on days and at times arrived at by mutual agreement
of the class members. Students will photograph a variety of subject matter in differing lighting
conditions, putting into practice the principles learned in earlier lecture and discussion courses.
Because of the extensive one-on-one coaching involved, enrollment is limited to 15 students.

Member Survey Coming Up Frank Peele
RCC’s success and growth over the past several years has been due to many things, but high on the
list is the club’s eagerness to meet the needs of our members. In that light, we periodically conduct
surveys to find out what’s on members’ minds. There will be such a survey in the near future, and we
want you to know that the success of this effort depends entirely on how well our members respond.
We want to tailor programs, workshops, classes, field trips, competitions, members’ nights and all our
efforts to maximize your participation in the club and the benefits you gain from it. We don’t want the
direction of RCC to be determined by a minority, and you shouldn’t either. So when the survey is
announced, please give it your best shot. And remember, if you don’t vote, don’t gripe later! Frank
Russ Trozera Redlands Camera Club Spring Competition reminders:
Remember your file titles and actual image names have specific formats for our competitions.
Title: Format of file name:
1. Spring on the Prairie springontheprairie.jpg
2. Old Time Shadows OnThe Wall oldtimeshadowsonthewall.jpg
Note the file name is identical to the Title; however, the file name is in all lower case and has no
spaces or punctuation. File names need to match the tile of the image with no caps spaces or
punctuation. For example: a title Sunrise Over The Ocean does not equal file name DSC_0313.jpg
Titles should not be longer than 32 characters Old Time Shadows On The Wall is almost exceeding the limit. This will cause the scores to slip off the ribbon label.
All this information can be found on the Redlands Camera Club web site under Competition.
Good Luck - Russ Any questions call my cell: 760 486 5269
