Brent Sikh Centre Sikligar Sewa

For many Sikhs, today, there is little difference between being Punjabi and being Sikh. But this is not the case. Sikhi has a rich and vibrant history outside of the Land of the Five Rivers and it is a legacy the Panth is only beginning to take notice of.

The travels of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, but also of Guru Amardas, Guru Hargobind, Guru Har Rai, Guru Harkrishan, Guru Tegh Bahadar and Guru Gobind Singh, the spread of Sikhi was not restricted to Punjab but instead extended from Kabul to Burma, from Tibet to Sri Lanka.

Guru Hargobhind Sahib Ji needed weapons for his army and he called for the best weapon makers from Marwar, Rajasthan. These Marwari men followed the guru and his teachings. When peace prevailed, these craftsmen returned to Marwar but were disowned by their brethren and became Vanjare - roaming artisans. Then during Guru Gobhind Singh Ji’s time weapons were required once more and they were called again. Guru Gobhind Singh Ji gave them the name Sikligar meaning ‘Polisher of weapons’ in Persian.

Today these non-Punjabi Gur Sikhs who live across India, with significant populations in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi need support.

After watching a documentary about the needy Sikligar Sikhs on TV our President S. Avtar Singh Hoonjan contacted the British Sikh Council to find out how we could help. He was told about the Sikhs of Atoot Khas(near Sanawad) in Madhya Pradesh. 15 years earlier they had been living in an area where the Indra Sagar Dam is now situated. Their land was needed for the dam and they were relocated to Atoot Khas. 7 years ago, they used some of the Government compensation for relocation to buy land to build a much needed Gurdwara. They never received the balance of the compensation from the Govt and have not been able to start.

In April 2016 a visit was made to see if it was a feasible project that Brent Sikh Centre could help with. With the grace of Waheguru on 16th October work was started on a 100 x 50-foot building comprising of a basement and ground floor. This building will provide much needed support for over 100 Sikh families in the area. A place to worship, meet, celebrate and hold classes. Completion is planned for May 2017.

Guru Gobind Singh, 1666-1708

We celebrate the Gurpurb on 5 Jan 2017

Guru Gobind Singh was the last of the ten Gurus, the one who transformed the Sikh faith. In 1699 he created the Khalsa (Pure), a community of the faithful who wore visible symbols of their faith and trained as warriors.

Today the Khalsa comprises all practising Sikhs.

Guru Gobind named the Guru Granth Sahib his successor. He succeeded his father Guru Tegh Bahadur at the age of 9. He spent his childhood years studying Persian and Sanskrit, and was skilled in the art of war. His mission was to uphold right in every place and destroy sin and evil.
