WelcomeScotland has shown itself to be a
powerhouse of creativity across
the ages, punching well above its
weight in the fields of architecture,
design and invention. The Festival of Architecture offers
an exceptional opportunity to interest and involve people
and communities all around Scotland and to display
what our exceptional built environment has to offer
to the world. This ambitious, nation-wide programme
of activities will enable people at home and visitors to
Scotland to immerse themselves in the wealth of our
architectural heritage, to discover hidden gems and to
interact with the Festival in very many creative ways.
The celebration of our nation’s architecture is an
important part of government’s responsibility for the
promotion of culture and we are pleased to support The
Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS)
during its centenary year, along with the wide range of
partner organisations contributing to the Festival.
The Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016
is timed to coincide with the Festival. The themed year
is a celebration of Scotland’s beautiful built heritage,
culture and environment, alongside the contemporary
and cutting-edge designs of today. The Festival forms
a key part of this year, highlighting the many ways in
which architecture enriches our lives. Importantly, the
Festival will interest and involve young and old and will
leave a legacy of tools and resources for communities,
exemplifying the shared aims of the RIAS and our
national policy on architecture and place.
Fiona Hyslop MSP
Cabinet Secretary for Culture,
Europe and External Affairs
