Waterford Harbour Sailing Club ❙ Sailing Programme 2014 01

2013 was a year we will remember for many years withthe fantastic weather we had. Many of us had glorious days onthe water and sometimes the weather was so glorious that therewas not even a breeze to move us forward. We won’t complainabout these days too much as there was always the terrace for a few beers, a relaxing time at the mooring with some friends in the cockpit, or just a leisurely spin in a kayak.

This year’s programme will be illustrated with some photographsof 2013 which will help you to recollect those fabulous days andhelp you look forward to a new season on the water. This yearwill be action packed if it depends on the committee; all it needsis for you to get involved, get on the water and take up thechallenges on the water or to simply join in the functions that we will have during the season.

This programme has useful information on what has beenarranged for this year. However, dates could change due toweather and we urge you to stay fully up to date via the clubwebsite (www.whsc.ie) which will be regularly updated withadditional information on events that have been moved.

In this programme you will find information on all sailing, the“Selfie Competition” and “Come Dine with Me” which will take place during the winter in the club house.

This season again, we expect more visiting yachts again toDunmore East – let us give them a warm welcome. Any visitors or potential members to the club should be issued with a programme to take home. You may never know on whosetable it lands; it is like a message in a bottle…

A special thanks to Conor O’Nolan, Rodney Regan and Dave the Sailor Power who contributed to the programme with somemarvellous photographs.

The diggers have been in DunmoreEast for over a year now and they have still notgone. Much has been done and much more is stillto happen.

The first thing completed was our pontoon forvisiting yachts. Last year it welcomed 197 visitingyachts and this excludes the yachts that were onthe swing moorings. Many languages were spokenon the visiting yachts from as far away as Norway,Holland and France.

The safety railing on the harbour walls now allowsfamilies with children to walk and see the activitiesat sea from ships, trawlers, half deckers, dinghiesand sometimes cruiser racing, now from a safe place.

The new slip is finished and it allows bigger boatsto be launched with a spacious turning circle tomanoeuvre boats and trailers. This year the TopperNationals have been attracted to Dunmore to usethe new slip which has been doubled in size to 12meters. This will see a vast improvement in launchingand retrieving boats from the water. The slip willbring additional users with trailers etc. and

consideration regarding parking will be required by all.

A new walkway has linked up the clubhouse withthe village. Have you seen the planting that the TidyTowns group did to make this a beautiful descentfrom the village to the sea?

The diggers are still in action this year building thenew waste water system for Dunmore East. Thisnew scheme will ensure that Dunmore East can boasta blue flag status for the foreseeable future whichis good news for everybody who loves the water.

And we are not finished yet… August will see thedredgers arriving in Dunmore East. This will bringthe harbour up to modern standards and bring lifeback into the synchro-lift allowing trawlers to beonce more be repaired in Dunmore East. Theharbour will allow bigger trawlers in and perhapseven tall ships but certainly larger yachts.

The future looks brighter and we are looking withinterest to the ideas of the Local Fisheries ActionGroup (FLAGS)

I was delighted to get theopportunity to spend Summer2013 teaching sailing in Boston. The company I worked for had three sites aroundBoston. One was on the Charles River overlooking thecity of Boston. The second site was at a teenagesummer camp on Long Island and the third was on alake on the outskirts of the city which is where I workedmost of the time.

Sailing instructorship is a fantastic asset to have as itmakes you easily employable in many countries. I would

recommend travelling abroad to teach sailing to anyone. Apart from the obvious advantage of the

sun, it’s a great way to meet new people, learn new skills and get to see places while making money and having fun!

I started working in WHSC thesummer I turned 16. It’s pretty great getting paid to drive motorboats aroundin the sun, sailing all day and essentially getting paidgood money for something you’d easily do for free. Yousuddenly look at your watch and find yourself askingwhere the day has gone – something that people don’tusually ask themselves in other jobs. When I compare that to my friends who were stuck inside for long days in yourtypical newsagents/deli shop – it’s easy to see which isthe nicer option.

Sailing experience is like a free pass to anywhere in theworld! If you have the qualifications, the world is youroyster, and you’ll have no problem getting a job as wellas expenses paid, wherever you wish.

The summer after my first year of college I worked as asailing instructor in Toronto while last summer I worked inSan Francisco. I had my job arranged and contract signedmonths before I left Ireland. I earned a higher wage andhad better working/social hours than many of my friendswho worked in non-sailing jobs and I also had my rentpart subsidised.

Besides the practical benefits work doesn’t feel like work.Taking the kids out on a J-boat to watch the start of anAmerica’s Cup race start – yes, please!

Last summer I decided to try something a bit different. Following four great summers sailing instructing in Dunmore East, I took a job working in a summer camp teachingsailing in Cape Cod. I lived in the dorms with the campers and taught all levels of sailing during the day. Workingthere doesn’t feel like a job – staff have just as much fun as the campers do and I think that is what makes the wholeatmosphere so magical. When I compare the work I was doing to the jobs that lots of my friends had there’s nocomparison. Only a crazy person would prefer to be slogging in a restaurant or sweating it out with a movingcompany instead of messing around in boats out in the sunshine all day. I’ve had the chance to do so many newthings and meet so many fantastic people through sailing, both through instructing and college racing, I can’trecommend keeping it up and getting qualified as an instructor highly enough.

I moved to Scotland five years ago to study medicine. . Last year, I decided to get more out of University and join a club. So with a background of both dinghy instructing andyacht racing, I decided to join Glasgow University Sailing Club. As a result, the last two years of college have beenabsolutely amazing! I’ve made friends with students in universities all over the UK and we’ve travelled to lakes and citiesas north as the highlands and as south as Cardiff.

Thanks to my training in Dunmore East, I was even chosen to sail for the Scottish Student Squad, and have been doing sofor the past two years. Sailing has given me the chance to experience a completely different side to university, and tobroaden my social network across the whole of the UK. With one year of university left, I’m already trying to rally mysailing friends to make an Old Boys Team. Its addictive!

Last year we saw the Flying Fifteens visitDunmore East and beforethat the lasers paid us avisit on national level. It was interesting to see that there were people young and old participating.

We start off every season at St Patrick’sday – the sound of young people enjoyingthemselves outside is like the first sounds ofsummer. New young sailors appear on the waterevery season and it seems that we are doingsomething right at Waterford Harbour SailingClub as we now have a number of young peopleparticipating at national and international level. In this programme you can read about someexperiences from our sailors who becameinstructors abroad.

Not all of us wants to be an instructor or workabroad – some of us just like to learn to sail while

others just like to race locally. So how doesone get started? Easy!

Waterford Harbour Sailing Club offers “TasterSailing Classes" for all ages, starting fromseven years old. For older people we offeradult sailing classes in cooperation with theAdventure Centre. These classes will give youan idea if you like sailing or not. In July weoffer the full range of sailing courses frombeginners to Kite and Wires Course. The latter will certainly get your adrenaline levels up a bit.

Most children begin in the Optimist as this is a reliable cost-effective boat to start in. If youlook after your boat well you will find it easyto sell it on when you get older and moreaccomplised and you need to move up tolarger or faster boats with your gainedexperienced. It is always good to be in a clubwhere there are ready buyers and sellersavailable. The club website offers a section in which you can advertise the selling andbuying of boats. In the club you will find manypeople to help you find the right boat and tohelp you get in touch with people who mightbe looking for a boat.

Our Junior Organiser Julie Finnegan will assistyou in sourcing the right course for you oryour family to get you started. Once you havethe hang of sailing it is time to get racing! There is no reason to be afraid – it is all goodfun! With racing you will very quickly improveyour skills as you strive to keep up with yourfellow competitors and before you know it you will not be at the back but you will be in the middle of it …

On the water we have our safety boats tokeep an eye on you and all other competitorswill help you on the way together with theinstructors.

Come on, give it a go.

I am still a beginner and made a fool out ofmyself on a number of occasions and eventuallylearned what starboard or port was on a boat afterclaiming rights in a race against one of the big boys. One looks really cool when you are claiming

starboard tack whilst you are on a port tack.

These are things that can happen in

the heat of the race and you learn from

them. Every cruiser in the club is nearly always looking for crew.

Now what is the definition of good crew? You would think that it is experienced

crew but this is not always

the case. On a boat there are about 6-7 positionsand with some common sense and interest andlistening to the fellow crew you can get the basics ofone of those positions in two or three races. If youwant to know a little more before you go to a boaton these positions I suggest you Google “Basics ofSailing by Captain Kangaroo”. It will explain to youin brief and in layman’s terms, some of thesepositions in a funny way, but I suggest you do notstudy them too much before your first sail.

So what is it in a good crew member that a skipperis looking for …? All you need is to be regularlyavailable so that you can start getting better at oneor two jobs on the boat. Turn up when you haveagreed to be available for sailing as not turning upat the last minute will leave the boat short-handed.Skippers have lots of time for crew that are eager toimprove and are good team workers and have acompetitive streak in them. A bit of anti-fouling with the owner is always appreciated too.

So if you would like to get a taste of sailing, want tofind out if this is something you like, all you need todo is get in touch with the Cruiser Captain or turnup on a Thursday evening at 18.30 or Sundayafternoon at 14.30 with a lifejacket, pair ofwellington boots and some wet gear and we willnot leave you standing on the quay. You are welcome on board.

For many the step to go on a sailing

boat is still a big step; I know it as I did

it only a few years ago … but I am still

grateful to the skipper who invited

me on board.

It could be you!
