Teacher’s Text

You are going to listen to some information about the Fernandez family.

Andreas is a thirty-seven-year-old German. He has a daughter named Anna. Some years ago, he went to Brazil during his holidays. That’s where he met Maria who is Brazilian. She has a son named Pedro. When Andreas was in Brazil, he fell in love with Maria. One year later, Maria and her son Pedro moved to Germany. Andreas and Maria got married. Andreas and his daughter Anna took Maria’s family name Fernandez. Maria and Pedro have lived with Andreas and his daughter Anna as a family in Germany for three years. Recently, Andreas’ company asked him to move to England, to work in the aircraft industry.

Andreas and his family boarded a plane from Munich airport in Germany. The pilot welcomed them. A stewardess offered them food and drink. Andreas chose a sandwich and a cup of coffee, whilst Maria chose water only. Pedro had a lemonade and Anna had water like her mother.

When they arrived at London Heathrow airport they were met by Dave Miller who also worked in the aircraft industry. He took them by car to Filton to see their new home.

Dave drove the family to a small town outside London where they were going to live. On their way to their new home they passed a high school which was near the house where the Fernandez family were going to live. It was going to be Anna and Pedro’s new school. They also saw a train station, a post office, a few shops and a cinema.

When they arrived at their new house they thought it was beautiful and really liked it. It had a back garden with a swing in it. The next day their friendly neighbours, Mr and Mrs Jones, organised a house-warming party for the Fernandez family. They cooked dinner and gave them some presents. The neighbours’ children, Jack and Ruby, made friends with Anna and Pedro.

It was going to be great living in England.

Read the following passage.

Shark Attack

Bethany has been a surfer since the age of five. At the age of 13 she ranked 8th in the world for under-eighteens and her future looked bright. However, on 31st October 2003 terror struck. It was a beautiful day and like most other days 13-year-old Bethany went surfing with her friends at Tunnels Beach in Hawaii. She was waiting to catch a wave when she suddenly felt a sharp pain in her arm and saw the sea turn red. She quickly realised that she was the victim of a shark attack! Her friends carried her back to the beach and rushed her to hospital.

Bethany lost 60 per cent of her blood but she managed to escape death. Bethany is lucky to be alive. But perhaps the most amazing thing of all this is that just three weeks after losing her arm she was surfing again! It wasn’t easy for her, though. She had to find a way to pull herself up onto the board with only one arm. Her father, Tom, also a long-time surfer, helped her. He fitted most of her boards with a special handle which she uses to pull herself up.

Bethany has promised herself not to let anything stop her from doing what she loves most. Soon after the shark attack, she entered a local surfing competition and surprised everyone by taking fifth place. In 2005, she won the National Scholastic Surfing Association Nationals. Bethany hasn’t returned to the beach where the accident happened. However, the young American surfer is a very strong person. She says, “I think anyone can overcome obstacles if they try.”
