Guinness World Record-Holder - The oldest officiallyrecognizedpupilwas90yearsold.HisnamewasKimaniNgangaMaruge,agreat-grandfatherwhohadneverhadthe opportunity to attend school in his poverty-strickenvillage...untilhereachedtheageof84.Atthattime,Kenyainstituted free schooling inprimary schools, according toBBCNews,andKimaniwasanxioustolearnhowtoreadanddomath, sohecould read theBibleandkeep trackofhissmallpension.Hebecametheoldestpersonevertoenrollinaprimaryschool.

HedidsoatKapkenduywa,wherehemaintainedastellarattendance record as he worked toward his dream ofbeingaveterinariansomeday.NothingcouldkeepKimaniawayfromlearning.Notthefirethatdestroyedhishome,causinghim tobe relocated to thecity.Not theviolencethatsometimesshatteredthepeaceofhishomeland.Notthecancerthatwasdiscoveredmonthsbeforehisdeath.

Kimanibelievedthat,“it’snevertoolate”.Nevertoolateto achieve a dream; never too late to challenge yourselfbeyondyourcomfortzonetoforceyoutostretchyourselfandlearnmarvelousnewthings;nevertoolatetocommityourselftothepursuitoflearning,asKimanididthroughhomestudyingwhenhewasstrickenwithhisfatalillness.Hewastwoyearsawayfromcompletingelementaryschoolwhenhedied.

Lifelonglearning—istheconsistent,dedicatedpursuitof knowledge throughout our lives, no matter thefieldorintensityofthelearning.Weengageinlifelonglearningforvariousreasons:toupdateourprofessionaljobskills;topursuehighereducationforcareeradvancement;toswitchcareersandgointoatotallydifferentfield,asthecurrenteconomyisforcingmanypeopletodo;tokeepourmindssharp,soastowardoffdementiaandotherphysicalweaknessesthatcomewithaging.

TakeRotaryforinstance.Theoccurrenceoflifelonglearningnowadaysisaneverendingstory.IrememberedthoseyearsinRotary,thethingswethink,sayordowerecomplexandcomprehensive.Forexample,thoseyearstakingachairmanpostorevenapresidencypostthen,wasaseasyas“ABC”.Today, before becoming a Club’s President you have toattendPrePETS1,2&3.ServiceAvenueDirectors,Club’sHon.SecretaryandHon.TreasurerneedtoattendSECTS,TETSandworkshopsatDistrictAssemblybeforetheytakeoffices.

Of late, therewasabitofconfusionwithregardstotheweeklyregularmeetingvenue. Itwasofcoursenofaultoftheclubratheroncircumstances.OurofficialvenueistheShangri-LaHotel,KLbutsometimesthehotelneedtherequiredmeetingroomsbacktocaterfortheircorporatecustomerwhohasbookedtheentireconferencevenueasapackage.Ourmeetingvenuehas tobesacrificed. Wecannotblamethehotelmanagementastheyneedtodobusinessandmaximisetheusageoftheirassets. Inanycase,theytelluswayinadvancesothatwecanprepareforalternativevenue.

Thus the confusion especially the visiting Rotarians orguests. it is therefore imperative for our SecretariattoinformthedistrictandtorotaryclubsaroundtheKlangvalleythattheywouldbeachangeofvenuefor our regular meeting for the affected monday.NeverthelessitisprudenttostationsomeoneatShangrilato inform the innocent visiting Rotarian or guest and toissuethenecessarymakeupcard.ImaginecomingsofarawaytoShangrilaanddoesn’tknowwhat’sgoingon.

We have held meetings at alternative venues like at theRoyal Selangor Club, Royal Lake Club, Holiday Villa KLandevenOlympicHotel.onewouldnoticethattheseareprestigiousplacesandmostofthetimewehavetopayapremiumforthelunch.AnewRotarianmightnotunderstandwhyweneedtodothat.Someofthereasonsareasfollows:

1) Weneedtomaintainthatrotaryisarespectableorganization and therefore has to meet in arespectableplace.Afterallwealwayssaythatwearean internationalorganizationandweneed toprojectandprotectthatimage.

2) With a respectable meeting place we can attractsenior corporate members and therefore furtherenhancesourimage.Thereisadualroleinthisasitisbothaninclusiveaswellasanexclusivepolicy.Inclusiveas it isanattractiontoseniorpeopleandexclusiveasitkeepsoutthosewhocan’taffordthepremiumlunchtab.

3) With a respectable venue, one need to dressappropriatelyandwedokeepadresscode. Infactwe have a club jacket which some members proudlywearweekinweekout.

4) Mindyou,asaserviceorganizationweneedtoraisefundsfromthepublic/orthecommunityandimageisimportantandweneedtoprojectatrustworthyone.

There are many other advantages of meeting in acongenialvenue. Most importantly itmustbeaccessibleandaffordable.OurpresentvenueattheShangrilaHotelareboth,andthat’swhymembersarehappyhere.

FellowRotarians,

Last week was indeed a very eventful one. The eventshappeningwerebacktoback.LastSaturdaymorning,onthe10thApril2010,attheDistrictRotaractAssembly’sOpening(DRA)at9.00p.m.atSriPetalingHotel,PuduRotaryClubwaswellrepresentedbyalargedelegationledbyRotaractChairman, PP Michael Tung. The delegation consisted ofDGELimKokBeng,PPGaryLim,PEChoyYing,RtnPatrickLee,AGVeivenGoon,andyourstruly.12RotaractorsfromPuduparticipatedintheAssembly.

It was a record, never before in any District RotaractAssemblies,itwasattendedbytheDistrictGovernor,DistrictGovernorElect,andtheDistrictGovernorNominee.ThetriowerethereattheOpeningCeremony,DG’sBanquetDinnerandtheClosingCeremony.WhatasupportfortheRotaractmovement.

I was one of the panelists at the President’s workshop.Though, the session was very interactive, surprisingly

and with great sadness, there were no Rotarians presentat the session there to assist the Rotaractors in resolvingcertainissuesregardingRotaryandtheRotarian.Foryourinformation,theRotaractscenarioisalsochangingrapidly,whilst theRotaractorshaveexpressedtheirhopestohavemoreRotariansparticipatingintheirworkshopsinthenearfuture.

Thank you, PP Michael Tung for making us proud at theDRA.

Intheevening,asearlyas5.30p.m.OCforSpouses’Night,IPP Michael Yeow, and his team - Rtn Lawrance Annies,andRtnBrendaLeewereatNewOrleansRestaurant,PlazaKelana Jaya to oversee the setting up for the evening’sfunction.

IamsurethoseRotariansandcharmingRotaryAnnswhowere there at the Spouses’ Night agreed with me that itwas themost spectacular, very entertaining anddramaticeveninginourPuduSpousesNight’shistory.Theeveningwasattendedby15couplesand5singles.

Pudu Rotary Club was presented by RtnJames Proheptt, Honorary Secretary, Rtn Alex Chang,DistrictRotaractRepresentative (DRR),RotaractorSanjeet,hisgirlfriend,MsEmmy,andyourstruly.

At the same table, the other participants were AG Dr.Khrisna, IPP Pushpa, PDG Dr. Joe, Rtn Steven Gan andhis son. This eventwasgraciouslyofficiatedbyGOH,YBDatukSeriDr.MaximusJohnityOngkili,MinisterofScience,TechnologyandInnovation.

FellowRotarians,thisFriday,16thApril2010willmarkthebeginningofthe76thDistrictAssemblyatSunwayLagoonResort Hotel & Spa. At 2.00 p.m., our club will have 2BlowingTeamstorolloffatSunwayBowlingCenterledbyPPKURajah.PleasecometosupportourBowlingTeamatthisBowlingFellowship.

On the 26th April, they will be visiting us at our WeeklyMeetingandIhopeandurgeallPuduRotarianstocomein full force to show them our unique and profoundfellowshipandhospitality.OnthesameMondayevening,Iamhostingthe“WelcomeDinner”.OnceIhavefinalizedthe venue, I will inform you personally and via email. TheHaitiEarthquakeReliefFundadonoradvisedfundsetup by The Rotary Foundation, has raised US$1.3 millionto help rebuild the country’s infrastructure, which wasshatteredby the12 Januaryearthquake thatkilledup to300,000peopleandleft1.2millionmorehomeless.

“Wearenowatthecrossroadsaswemovefromimmediaterelief mode to sustainable development,” says Past RIDirector Barry Rassin, an account holder for the fund.“Whatisimportantisthatweworkwiththeneedsdefinedby Haiti and always keep in mind that our help shouldstrengthentheireconomyandnotdetractfromit.”

District 7020,which includesHaiti, has flownmore than100 planes filled with medical equipment, food, water,clothes,toys,andtentsintothecitiesofPignonandPort-de-Paix. The district’s own account for recovery effortshasreached$400,000,whichwillbeusedforsustainablerestorationprojects.

WhiletheHaitiTaskForceoverseeingrecoveryeffortsisstillformulating long-term plans, committee members haveidentified three areas of major need: rebuilding schools,providing prosthetic limbs to amputees, and equippingthousandswithadequate shelterbefore the rainy seasonarrives.

The17RotaryclubsinHaitiaredevelopingaplantorestoreatleastoneschoolbacktooperatingcapacitywithdesks,books,supplies,andothernecessities.Schoolsareaprioritybecauseinadditiontoeducatingchildren,theyprovideatleastonemealadayandhelpkeepthestudentsoccupiedandoutoftentcities.

Theneedforprostheticsisalsogreat.Anestimated4,000people have undergone amputations from earthquake-related injuriesandrequireprosthetic limbs.District7020appointed a committee to coordinate with organizationsinterested in helping to provide prosthetics. The districtis lookingtosetupthreeclinicsatanestimated$50,000each.

With the hurricane season approaching, district leadershavealsoappointedacommitteetoinvestigateappropriateways to provide shelter than can withstand storms andearthquakes. The district has considered creating villagesthatwouldhaveallthenecessaryinfrastructure,includingwater, sanitation facilities, and a clinic, school, andcommunitycenter.

District leaders say theywill providemore information toclubsanddistrictsabouthowtheycanworkwiththedonor

advised fund as soon as specific details of the recoveryplan are approved by the Haiti Task Force and clearedwiththeHaitiangovernment.Thoseinterestedinapplyingforagrant fromtheHaitiEarthquakeReliefFundshouldcompleteagrantapplicationform,whichwillbeavailableontheDistrict7020website.

TheInteractClubofLaJollaHighSchool,California,USA,ismakingadifferencebyhelpingtobuildnewhomesforsomeofthepoorestresidentsofTijuana,Mexico.

Interactors and the sponsor Rotary Club of La Jolla havecollaborated with Project Mercy, a San Diego-basednonprofitthatbringsgroupstoMexicoforadaytobuildsimplesingle-familyhouses.

“Thisisauniqueopportunityforthestudentstounderstandthe incredible difference they can make in communitiesin need,” says Rotarian Calvin Mann, the La Jolla club’syouth service committee chair. “It’s a universally goodexperience.”

ThroughProjectMercy,Interactorshavebuilt11homesforfamiliesinthelastthreeyears.Agroupofabout15to20Interactors, parents, and -Rotarians can build a home inoneday.Interactorsraise$3,500perhomethroughschoolfundraisingactivitiesandRotariancontributions.

Project Mercy works with communities to identify needyfamilies,manyofwhomliveinflimsyshackswithdirtfloorsand tarp roofs. The organization hires local constructionworkers to pour concrete foundations, then brings involunteerstobuildthehomes.

TheprojectisjustoneoffivestorieshighlightedonthenewInteract promotional DVD, Interact: Make a Difference,designed to inspire young people to join Interact and tomotivateRotarianstosponsoraclubintheircommunity.

Rotarians inHaitiare layingthegroundworkfor thenextphase of the recovery process: sustainable restorationprojectsthatwillenablelong-termrehabilitationtobegin.

TheHaitiEarthquakeReliefFundadonoradvisedfundsetup by The Rotary Foundation, has raised US$1.3 millionto help rebuild the country’s infrastructure, which wasshatteredby the12 Januaryearthquake thatkilledup to300,000peopleandleft1.2millionmorehomeless.

“Wearenowatthecrossroadsaswemovefromimmediaterelief mode to sustainable development,” says Past RIDirector Barry Rassin, an account holder for the fund.“Whatisimportantisthatweworkwiththeneedsdefinedby Haiti and always keep in mind that our help shouldstrengthentheireconomyandnotdetractfromit.”

District 7020,which includesHaiti, has flownmore than100 planes filled with medical equipment, food, water,clothes,toys,andtentsintothecitiesofPignonandPort-de-Paix. The district’s own account for recovery effortshasreached$400,000,whichwillbeusedforsustainablerestorationprojects.

WhiletheHaitiTaskForceoverseeingrecoveryeffortsisstillformulating long-term plans, committee members haveidentified three areas of major need: rebuilding schools,providing prosthetic limbs to amputees, and equippingthousandswithadequate shelterbefore the rainy seasonarrives.

The17RotaryclubsinHaitiaredevelopingaplantorestoreatleastoneschoolbacktooperatingcapacitywithdesks,books,supplies,andothernecessities.Schoolsareaprioritybecauseinadditiontoeducatingchildren,theyprovideatleastonemealadayandhelpkeepthestudentsoccupiedandoutoftentcities.

Theneedforprostheticsisalsogreat.Anestimated4,000people have undergone amputations from earthquake-related injuriesandrequireprosthetic limbs.District7020appointed a committee to coordinate with organizationsinterested in helping to provide prosthetics. The districtis lookingtosetupthreeclinicsatanestimated$50,000each.

With the hurricane season approaching, district leadershavealsoappointedacommitteetoinvestigateappropriateways to provide shelter than can withstand storms andearthquakes. The district has considered creating villagesthatwouldhaveallthenecessaryinfrastructure,includingwater, sanitation facilities, and a clinic, school, andcommunitycenter.

District leaders say theywill providemore information toclubsanddistrictsabouthowtheycanworkwiththedonor

advised fund as soon as specific details of the recoveryplan are approved by the Haiti Task Force and clearedwiththeHaitiangovernment.Thoseinterestedinapplyingforagrant fromtheHaitiEarthquakeReliefFundshouldcompleteagrantapplicationform,whichwillbeavailableontheDistrict7020website.

TheInteractClubofLaJollaHighSchool,California,USA,ismakingadifferencebyhelpingtobuildnewhomesforsomeofthepoorestresidentsofTijuana,Mexico.

Interactors and the sponsor Rotary Club of La Jolla havecollaborated with Project Mercy, a San Diego-basednonprofitthatbringsgroupstoMexicoforadaytobuildsimplesingle-familyhouses.

“Thisisauniqueopportunityforthestudentstounderstandthe incredible difference they can make in communitiesin need,” says Rotarian Calvin Mann, the La Jolla club’syouth service committee chair. “It’s a universally goodexperience.”

ThroughProjectMercy,Interactorshavebuilt11homesforfamiliesinthelastthreeyears.Agroupofabout15to20Interactors, parents, and -Rotarians can build a home inoneday.Interactorsraise$3,500perhomethroughschoolfundraisingactivitiesandRotariancontributions.

Project Mercy works with communities to identify needyfamilies,manyofwhomliveinflimsyshackswithdirtfloorsand tarp roofs. The organization hires local constructionworkers to pour concrete foundations, then brings involunteerstobuildthehomes.

TheprojectisjustoneoffivestorieshighlightedonthenewInteract promotional DVD, Interact: Make a Difference,designed to inspire young people to join Interact and tomotivateRotarianstosponsoraclubintheircommunity.

Last week was indeed a very eventful one. The eventshappeningwerebacktoback.LastSaturdaymorning,onthe10thApril2010,attheDistrictRotaractAssembly’sOpening(DRA)at9.00p.m.atSriPetalingHotel,PuduRotaryClubwaswellrepresentedbyalargedelegationledbyRotaractChairman, PP Michael Tung. The delegation consisted ofDGELimKokBeng,PPGaryLim,PEChoyYing,RtnPatrickLee,AGVeivenGoon,andyourstruly.12RotaractorsfromPuduparticipatedintheAssembly.

It was a record, never before in any District RotaractAssemblies,itwasattendedbytheDistrictGovernor,DistrictGovernorElect,andtheDistrictGovernorNominee.ThetriowerethereattheOpeningCeremony,DG’sBanquetDinnerandtheClosingCeremony.WhatasupportfortheRotaractmovement.

I was one of the panelists at the President’s workshop.Though, the session was very interactive, surprisingly

and with great sadness, there were no Rotarians presentat the session there to assist the Rotaractors in resolvingcertainissuesregardingRotaryandtheRotarian.Foryourinformation,theRotaractscenarioisalsochangingrapidly,whilst theRotaractorshaveexpressedtheirhopestohavemoreRotariansparticipatingintheirworkshopsinthenearfuture.

Intheevening,asearlyas5.30p.m.OCforSpouses’Night,IPP Michael Yeow, and his team - Rtn Lawrance Annies,andRtnBrendaLeewereatNewOrleansRestaurant,PlazaKelana Jaya to oversee the setting up for the evening’sfunction.
