the news assigns relevance to a certain number of days. But this is an illusion. the events lead an afterlife of their own. the year 1990, the lines of development of which were con-tinually being disrupted, has cast its shadow far into the present. the history of the NsU terror cell and the role that government officials played in this series of murders will not be fully understood until the year 2134 – in five generations. The German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has sealed the files for 120 years – a level of secrecy that goes beyond that of military secrets or nuclear technology. the massive amount of trust in the state that will be lost as a result of the decision to shroud this case in secrecy for so long is having an effect on the present. “The past is never dead. It’s not even past. We detach it from us and pretend it has nothing to do with us.” (Christa Wolf)

The 8th edition of the Festival for Photography f/stop Leipzig is titled “Broken Bonds”. The festival’s curators, Spector Books editors Anne König and Jan Wenzel, see photography as a tool for observing and reflecting on society. This technical storage medium holds time in place and thus allows general societal dynamics to be explored in both their everyday mani-festations and their lines of conflict. This year the main exhibition will be spread over three different locations and will showcase the medium of drawing alongside photography as an equally worthy artistic genre. as a corrective to photography and its counterpart, capable of combining fact and imagination in a very different manner, the medium of drawing is assu-ming increasing importance. f/stop Print will present two books that examine the everyday operations of a hospital—a representative location for society. as in the past, this year the festival will strike out into the city itself: the image-text essay “Exposing the Year 1990” with photographs by Andreas Rost, text collages by Elske Rosenfeld and notes from the year 1990 by Christian Borchert will be put on display on Wilhelm Leuschner Square. A wide-ranging programme including a symposium, artist talks and film series in addition to the exhibition itself and the events of our f/stop satellites and accomplices will complement the festival.

On the Aftermath of Images. Plenum on political debate and visual participation practices

post-democratic crises require new spaces for political participation where opposing posi-tions and movements can encounter one another. the plenum—or parliamentary full assem-bly—is currently losing its significance in the political realm. Agreements are increasingly being made behind closed doors and truth is being warped for the purposes of winning votes.

the symposium of the 8th Festival for photography f/stop leipzig has been organized in three plena and conceived as a space for public debate. it is closely connected to the ques-tions posed in the festival exhibitions regarding the “broken bonds” of society and the role of photography in communication and mediation processes. artists, activists, sociologists, journalists, representatives of grassroots organizations, etc. will come together on 23 and 24 June to debate with one another and with the audience. Focus will be placed on politi-cal image practices, from work with archives, to digital image creation and distribution, to artistic research with image documents as media of knowledge production, to photography as a collective memory element and corrective, to strategies of visual and discursive partici-pation.

Dwelling on the boundary between classic documentary and so-called “fictional film”, the works selected by Leif Magne Tangen and Sarah Schipschack for f/stop Film 2018 reveal insights into the “broken bonds” of society, potentially initiating discussions that a society needs in order to view itself critically and continue to develop. three evening programmes will explore different thematic domains. The first evening will examine political resistance, enclaves, and social life under precarious conditions. The second evening will take an unnostalgic look at the former East Germany. The past and future perspectives will be deba-

ted in what can be described as a kind of historicization of what once was and what might be. The third evening will explore surveillance, espionage and weapons. Yet the subject mat-ter of the three evenings will also overlap, as “it’s better and easier to utilize individual parts than entire structures”, as Christa Wolfs put it in her first letter from the year 1990 in which she refuses to speak publicly about Germany. Nicolas Siepen will be on hand on the final evening to talk with the audience about films, the year 1990, Godard, Deleuze & Guattari, and everything in between.

Workshop in Cooperation with the Kupferstich-Kabinett der Staatlichen Kunstsammlun-gen Dresden, 28 June 2018, 15:00–18:00

Exposing the Year 1990

This workshop will focus on the interim and transitional period after the collapse of the East german state in autumn 1989 and the photographic traces that were left behind. three introductory lectures and a panel discussion with individuals involved in the historic events will attempt to explore how photographers accompanied, recorded and helped process the societal changes by means of images and other resources. at the centre of the discussion is the question in what ways and to what extent photography can be utilized to render more comprehensible the vast upheaval that began in 1990 and affected all areas of life for that and succeeding generations. We will also consider the question as to what role photogra-phic images and image archives can now play in understanding the causes, structures and manners of dealing with present societal tensions.

Guided Tours in Cooperation with the Institute of Art History of the University of Leipzig

Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Tanja Zimmermann and in the framework of the project module “Broken Bonds. Art and Democratic Processes”, students of the Institute of Art History of the University of Leipzig will offer tours of the main exhibition. Participants in the project group are Anna Magdalena Bohley, Jana Faro, Daria Frei, Sally Frey, Leonie Ken-nedy, Adelina Lohaj, Isabel Matschoke, Therese Mausbach, Jan Eric Scheel, Marie Charlotte Seidel, Lisa Wachter, Leo Wedepohl and Marie Christine Wickern. These students will also write short academic texts that will later be published on this website. the texts will examine above all social, ecological, ethical and politically engaged artistic positions.

The Festival

f/stop is one of the most important photography festivals in germany. it was organized for the first time in 2007 by the Centre for Contemporary Photography Leipzig and was held annually until 2010. Since 2012 f/stop has taken place biannually. Exhibitions and symposia conceived by guest curators offer a platform for artistic, curatorial and academic work that explores social issues utilizing the resources and potential of photography.
