Program

In may 2008,S4S and Osiris teamed up. Sharing the same goals of

making sustainability a core value of both students as well as teachers as the Delft University of Technology, they started brainstorming about making it more accessible as well as more interesting. The outcome of this brainstorm was the plan to

organize one week totally filled with sustainability. This week was quickly named the “Sustainability Event.” Members of Students 4 Sustainability, Osiris as well as enthusiastic independent students went to work to make sure this first week would become a success!

Sustainability EventThe Delft University of Technology made a statement in 2007: as a large

university, it decided to take a global lead and inspire (future) engineers to have a sustainable focus in their approach of technological problems. In a world so full of controversy with regard to sustainability, a world in which Al Gore and his opposites fight each other through media using harsh words, this is a brave vision. A vision that should actively be put into action. A university holding such ambition cannot go without activities organized around this globally important theme. Therefore, we organized the Sustainability Event.

The Event is spread throughout the University as broad as possibly. Just look around at the Aula after a lecture, visit one of the associations

participating, have a drink during any of the drinks organized... Whether you are only little inspired by sustainability, you can join in our easily accessible activities such as drinks and dinners. If you’re an experienced greeny, join in our debate or visit the T.O.P. Forum, and if you are already thinking about your life after the TU Delft, visit our “Duurzaam Daten.” The program has been set up as such that students can actively participate to the extend they desire – just as we envisioned

Sustainability, of course, should be key during this week. Activities are focused towards all students and employees of the TU Delft, aiming at the different

disciplines and levels of interest.

Committee of RecommendationSustainability Event is recommended by:

Jacob Fokkema, Rector Magnificus, Delft University of Technology

Lian Merkx, Municipal Councillor sustainability of the city of Delft

Wubbo Ockels, Professor Sustainable Technology, Delft University of Technology

Students 4 Sustainability

Students 4 Sustainability was founded at 28 February 2008. It had a clear goal from the start: Students 4 Sustainability invests in projects in which

sustainable technology is put to action in developing countries. This results in a dual approach: In Delft, Students 4 Sustainability tries to show that sustainability can be a cool way to innovate. In the developing countries we focus at investing in feasible sustainable technology set up by TU Delft students.

Ambitions are key to success, as demonstrated by S4S: Within the first year, 300 sponsors had been attracted, and three projects were in the portfolio.

To date, we have nearly 400 sponsors and support 5 projects. It also holds an interesting internship list, composed of internships from throughout the TU Delft. At S4S, we do not define success as easily handing out money and acquiring sponsors. Success can be defined as lessons learned, too. We try to gather experiences which eventually lead to student projects being successful and profitable. It could be your project!

Photo Contest Your most inspiring experience in a developing country

Leaving your comfort zone and traveling to a third world country is a marvelous experience. Watch the

beauty of nature, meet inspiring people, reflect on the life you have at home...

Many students of the TU Delft have had those inspiring experiences. We would like to know what

is yours. Hand in your most beautiful picture from such a journey, with or without your story. The pictures will be exposed at the exposition, as to inspire others. With all other people handing in their pictures, you will competing for nice prices!

Sustainability in progress

OsirisOsiris is an interactive platform, which aims to make the concept of

Sustainable Development more concrete and to increase support for it. Not just for students, but surely with the student at it´s foundations. Sustainable Development is a very broad concept and an unachievable goal when one limits itself to one discipline. Hence we want to involve ourselves in interdisciplinarity and sustainability. Together they offer opportunities, on their own they´re not more than concepts.

Osiris is a network for people in- and outside of the TU Delft, student or non student, in the name of Osiris. A network that shows the importance

and the appeal of Sustainable Development. We are the fertile ground for discussions resulting from Sustainable Development. In this way we want to gather people, transform the most fantastic ideas of students into concrete plans and to untie the hands of the practical men or women.

Duurzaam Daten

This part of the program delivers both students as well as companies with a sustainable focus

the opportunity to meet each other. Students can learn more about the sustainable side of different companies and the opportunities they can have as an entrepreneur or engineer. Showing the importance of responsible business to students as well as the talent available at the Delft University of Technology, we hope this gathering will be fruitful for both parties present. Please let us know if you are keen to participate in the Duurzaam Daten by sending an e-mail to [email protected]. This activity will be held in Dutch. Time: November11th, 15:00hLocation: Foyer Aula TU DelftTickets: Free, registration needed

Grand Opening

The official start of the Sustainability Event will be the grand opening. This opening will be lead by Prof. Dr. Wubbo

Ockels, who will introduce the topic of sustainability in his speech. Following this speech, the second edition of the Osiris Magazine is presented. Grasp one for your journey home, or more to hand them out to your friends and family. Stay a little longer to watch our exposition in the Aula and talk to the organizations exposing.

The opening will be followed by a joined dinner (costs E7,50). If you wish to attend this dinner, please inform

the organization in advance by sending an email to [email protected].

Time: November 10th, 17:15hLocation: Foyer Aula TU DelftTickets: Free, no registration needed (register for the dinner!)

Greendrinks XL & DebateEvery month people who work in sustainability or an environmental field meet up for a beer at an informal gathering known as Green Drinks. A lively mixture of people from NGOs, academia, government and business regularly attend. Come along and you’ll be made welcome. Just say, “are you green?” and we will look after you and introduce you to whoever is there! It’s a great way of catching up with people you know and also for making new contacts. Everyone invites someone else along, so there´s always a different crowd, making Green Drinks an organic, self-organising network. The evenings are very simple and unstructured, but many people have found employment, made friends, developed new ideas, done deals and had moments of serendipity at Green Drinks. It’s a force for the good and we’d like to help it spread to other cities. Osiris is the host organisation of Green Drinks Delft. A possibility to have dinner at the greendrinks is integrated. If you want to join the dinner (€4,-), please subscribe: [email protected].

During this XL version of the Green Drinks there will be a debate at 20:00h. The debate will focus on sustainability at the TUDelft. The debate will be a very interactive and will focus on what the TUDelft is doing about sustainability and what it should be doing.

Time: November 11th, 17:00hlocation: K.S.V. Sanctus Virgilius, Oude Delft 57, DelftTickets: Free, no registration needed (register for the dinner!)

Exposition

Many students have dedicated time to develop sustainable solutions, either in compulsory

courses or during an internship, summer project etc. Look around to see what yóú can do as an engineer, and find out what drives your fellow students. The exposition can be visited throughout the week, on Wednesday responsible students will be present.

Eneco & Excursion WKC

As an engineer, it is always interesting to learn more about the field of your study, or learn about other disciplines. Several study

associations have planned to organize a lunch lecture which is open for any student or employee interested to attend. A special lecture is organized by Eneco on Thursday. Our head sponsor will talk about heat, and how this can be used to our purposes. The lecture will we followed by an excursion to the warmth power station at the campus. Both activities are open for participation, both in combination as well as stand alone activities.

Time: November 13th, 12:30–13:30hlocation: to be announced, be sure to check our websiteTickets: Entrance for free, no registration needed

After the lecture we will visit the WarmteKracht Centrale (WKC) of the TU Delft. The TU Delft will explain what the university does in

the field of sustainable development and how the WKC contributes to the campus. During the excursion the heat net of the university will be explained as well as the system.

Time: November 13th, 13.30h and 16.00hlocation: WarmteKracht Centrale, Leeghwaterstraat 36Tickets: Entrance for free,no registration needed

Mini SymposiumDesigning for Developing Countries

Sustainability is not only about energy and emissions. One of the most important aspects is “people” in the broadest

sense. People are key in everything: they use products, they live on the surface of this earth, need food, produce waste... In western countries, it is relatively easy to understand needs. How about people in developing countries? How to suffice their needs? This interesting symposium addresses successes and pitfalls of designing for developing countries.

Time: November 12th, 15:00–18:00hlocation: TU Delft AulaTickets: Entrance for free, no registration needed

AssociationsOsiris and Students4Sustainability want to thank the study

and student associations involved in the Sustainability Event. We need each other to put sustainable development into practice!
