Welcome SHAPE Vermont Members, Conference Attendees, and Vendors,

I would like to welcome you all to the 2018 SHAPE VT Conference, “Teach. Play. Learn.”

You all work so hard developing healthy and physically active students within your school communities. You create rich physically active experiences, foster healthy habits, teach crucial health and physical education standards, organize after school activities, coach sport, and much more.

I encourage you to take time over the next day or two, to step away from all that work in order to teach, learn, and play together. So many of you are isolated within your schools, as the only health or physical education teacher. I hope you seize this opportunity to connect with professionals from around the state.

I would like to welcome our keynote speakers Mike Martinez and Molly Creamer. We are very fortunate to have both Mike and Molly and I am excited to hear these two amazing individuals speak about their passion. In addition, both keynote speakers will be presenting a session(s) and Mike will be interviewing conference attendees on his live podcast. Make sure to check it out!

A warm welcome and big thank you goes to US Games for sponsoring the keynote and to GOPHER for sponsoring the awards recipients. An additional thank you goes out to all of our vendors, we appreciate your support and hard work. Thank you to all presenters for taking time to share and provide quality sessions for conference attendees.

Wether this is your first SHAPE VT conference or your twenty-first, I want to thank you for making this professional development opportunity a priority. It is not easy for every teacher to get time off in order to attend conferences or workshops. Therefore, an additional thank you goes out to your schools and administrators. I think it is so important for us, as teachers, to continue to better ourselves in and outside of the classroom. In order to best serve our students, we need to understand and experience the student role ourselves.

A special thank you goes out to the President-Executive Board: Wendy Johnson, Geoff Bloomer, Kali Harris, Kelly Spreen, Catherine Patch and Soren Pelz-Walsh. Thank you for all your efforts and volunteer work to help make this organization what it is. Thank you to Chris Shackett, Glenn Steinman and Greg Carpenter for their continued volunteer contributions to SHAPE-VT. Thank you to our executive director, Lisa Pleban, for providing outstanding direction and support to the executive board. A big shout out goes to the conference committee, Phil Chaput, Kate McCord (& myself), for putting together our 2018 program. We are excited and hope you enjoy it.

In addition, I want to thank Phil Chaput, past-president, for his unwavering support and guidance over the past three plus years. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for the past presidents that came before me, Phil, Mark Weikert, and Betsey Caldwell, all of whom took me under their wing, showed me the path, and supported me all the way. I can not speak enough about how much I have appreciated this opportunity to serve as SHAPE-VT President. It has been an unbelievable experience, opening new doors, teaching me new things, and introducing me to so many amazing health and physical education professionals. It has been my honor to serve as your 2018 SHAPE-VT President and I know you are in good hands with Kate McCord taking the reins. The future is bright for SHAPE Vermont. Thank you and enjoy the conference.

Best Wishes, Matthew Bristol2018 SHAPE-Vermont President

Concussions in our classrooms: a return to

play for P.E

Northstar 1Kate Harney-

Norwich University

Concussions are a hot topic in sports in our society today. Schools and athletic departments are putting together return to learns and return to plays

to benefit our students, but they are pulling them out of PE. Current research suggests that starting light cardio that will not exacerbate current symptoms

improves patient outcomes. This presentation will outline how current research like this and the combination of a return to play and learn impact

how we can integrate students with a concussion into our classrooms.Increasing skill

competencies in health education: Helping students show what

they know!

Northstar 2Heidi Pound - The Children’s Health Market

This session focuses on the essential need to address the National Health Education Skill Standards of analyzing influences, accessing information,

communication, decision-making, goal-setting, self-management and advocacy. Moving beyond just acquiring information to demonstration of

health skills is our goal for students! Come learn how THE GREAT BODY SHOP, a K-8 comprehensive health education curricular resource provides

students with multiple opportunities to practice skills, specific to the standards, and in a variety of situations. Participants will enjoy an interactive

session which will overview the 2018-2019 curriculum and engage participants in several skill-based activities.

Martial arts in P.E. Gateway 1 & 2 This lesson would be a movement based seminar and is a unit/lesson that I teach in my PE classes. This is a unit I currently teach in my PE classes. It is appropriate for all levels but the proposed levels are 1-12. I do not teach it to

K in a school setting. It is a movement based martial art with a lot of punching and kicking. It is called Moo Duk Kwan Soo Bahk Do. It is a South

Korean Martial Art. The unit isn’t primarily this martial art but it is the influence for the unit. I use it to teach students there are alternatives to lifetime fitness other than your traditional activities. It is an individual

activity that teaches discipline, respect, self-worth and teaches you about your body. It is primarily a self-defense unit. There are basic techniques like

blocks, punches, and kicks. Those can be learned/taught very easily.

Children and Teachers (CATs) on the Move, an aerobic physical activity program designed for use with young children, has separate curricula for K-3 (CATs), and preschool (Kiddie CATs) children, respectively. Each curriculum promotes children’s engagement in structured, moderate-to-vigorous activity and teaches children the importance of being physically active throughout their lives. CATs sessions are approximately 30 minutes in duration, and Kiddie CATs sessions are approximately 32 minutes; both can be used in various contexts before, during, or after school. The goals of this 50-minute presentation are to provide attendees with (1) an overview of the research underlying the programs; (2) knowledge of how the programs are consistent with the Comprehensive School Physical Activity Programs (CSPAP) approach; (3) a review of each program’s structure and implementation; (3) specifics on how to utilize each program’s curriculum; and (4) information on program training opportunities.

PATCH for Health Education: Help Empower Teens to Access Healthcare They Need & Deserve

Gateway 1 & 2Nathaniel Waite, VT Dept of Health, & Dr. Michelle Shepard, UVM Medical Center

Despite initiatives to improve adolescent healthcare, only 40-60% of VT teens attend annual well visits. More than just a physical, well visits include discussions on nutrition, exercise, mental health, sexuality, safety, and strengths. Lack of relationships with providers, confidentiality concerns, and uncertainty around their rights may prevent teens from accessing healthcare. Health Education classes provide opportunities to address these barriers. The PATCH program, is designed to “educate and empower youth to become responsible managers of their own healthcare”. Using a positive youth development approach, this program aims to engage, educate and empower teens to improve their health by partnering with providers. The PATCH classroom edition covers multiple National Health Education Standards allowing health educators to meet curriculum requirements while providing teens skills to manage their own health. We’d like to partner with schools to support use of this curriculum.

Population-Level Prevention Education - Join EVERFI’s Prescription Drug Safety Network

Northstar 2Jessica Donovan - EVERFI

The U.S. opioid epidemic has put our country in a state of public health emergency. So far, many of the efforts to address this crisis have been focused on increasing response and expanding access to treatment. EVERFI, a leading education technology company, created the Prescription Drug Safety Network (PDSN) in 2017 to bring together partners committed to getting ahead of the problem through population-level prevention. A first-of-its-kind public-private partnership, the PDSN is national coalition of healthcare organizations, pharmaceutical manufacturers, distributors, pharmacies, foundations, and state leaders. Our mission is to raise awareness at a national level and bring an evidence-based curriculum to students at scale. Thanks to the support of our network's sponsors, EVERFI can deliver the one-hour high school curriculum to schools at no cost. In the session, we will share what we learned last school year with The PDSN and provide attendees with access to the curriculum.
