The World Bank Legal Vice Presidency looks forward to welcoming you to Law, Justice and Development Week 2019. Each year, Law, Justice and Development Week gathers leading voices in the field of law and development around some of the most important conversations to help define our shared responsibility towards a better world for all.

The Law, Justice and Development Week annual conversations reflect on what has been accomplished to date, and just as importantly, discuss how we can effectively build measurable development outcomes to benefit those who need them the most.

It is a reality that much of the innovation driving the Fourth Industrial Revolution is powered by disruptive technologies. From the digitalization of goods and services, computing, to artificial intelligence, FinTech, and RegTech, public and private sector actors have access to a plethora of means to help improve economies and livelihoods. While leaders in innovation generally come from the private sector, governments can deploy technologies to increase efficiency, transparency, and accessibility. These can be seen in countless examples of technology helping facilitate the delivery of services such as personal identification, land registry, voting, and traceability among others.

Rapid technological advances come with risks and challenges to traditional legal frameworks which are often unable to adjust as rapidly. As development and legal professionals, it is essential that our conversations help anticipate how law and the legal community can proactively and positively shape the evolving agenda.

This year’s theme of “Rights, Technology and Development” is at the forefront of our current engagements as development practitioners. How can technology help us reach the most remote places on Earth to make sure livelihoods are transformed for the better? How can technology help promote greater access to justice for all?

As you join us from all parts of the world and from different sectors, we look forward to the influx of novel ideas that will build on the existing work to continue positively shaping our development work. I hope you will make the most of the knowledge sharing experience we are offering at Law, Justice and Development Week 2019. We are thrilled to expand our collaborative work between the World Bank Group, multilateral organizations, governments, court systems, NGOs, and the private sector around rights, technology and development.

An ethically provocative interactive installation that enables public participation in the de-batearoundethicsandArtificial Intelligence.Participantsare invited tohave their facephotographed and witness the reveal of their psychometric analysis, including attributes such as aggressiveness, weirdness and emotional instability. Ultimately, a personalized sce-narioofalgorithmicdecision-makingisshowninordertostimulateindividualreflectionontheethicalapplicationofartificialintelligence.

Biometric Mirror is a research project to explore attitudes towards facial analysis and automated decision-making.

Data captured by the cameras and displayed on the screen is anonymised and securely transmitted. All data is erased irreversibly upon terminating interactions. Data cannot be used to personally identify you or passersby. You can step out of the camera frame to make all information disappear from the screen immediately.

The research is being conducted by researchers at Interaction Design Lab at the Uni-versity of Melbourne, with support from Science Gallery Melbourne.
