WELCOMEIn times of rapid change, leaders need to build orga-nizations that are capable to continuously recognize, evaluate and execute on promising opportunities. This often requires certain mental agility, imaginative foresight and a set of skills that accompany innova-tion processes. It is clear that a focus on optimizing the present by relying on past experiences is not enough to participate in shaping the future. Leaders of companies of all sizes are realizing that they need to rethink past drivers of success and rediscover their entrepreneurial spirit.

Our Executive MBA Program offers an opportunity to deepen your understanding of the intricacies of the entrepreneurial and innovation processes and develop your personal potential in leading them. The learning is deep and social – spending a year with like-minded, yet diverse and driven professionals and faculty creates powerful insights and bonds. BUSINESS DESIGNIn the project modules of the Executive MBA in Innovation and Business Creation, you will learn how to push forward your innovation or startup idea. Nowadays companies and start-ups operate in highly competitive markets. In order to survive, they have to be innovative and realize new business.

UnternehmerTUM’s Business Design approach supports you in identifying, developing and re-alizing sustainable business. It uses proven prin-ciples of design and strategic management to open up new perspectives and give answers to questions that may not yet even have been asked – supporting you and your team in de-veloping a more target-oriented and profound commitment to your project.

Whatever impulse you will get for an innovation or a startup – may it be a new technology or simply a gut feeling about market needs – a huge field of unknowns makes it difficult to validate entrepreneurial opportunities. If you are looking to expand an existing business or set up a new one, you will need to identify these unknowns and find ways of dealing with them as quickly as possible. This is where methodologies from the world of design can help.

Business Design helps you find answers – quickly and cost-efficiently. When creating new products and services, designers explore the real needs and desires of their customers while at the same time considering technological feasibility and profitability. Applying design prin-ciples in a business context successfully sup-ports the development and optimization of products, services, business models, process-es and strategies.

Benefits:– Evaluate entrepreneurial opportunities more

accurately

– Eliminate as many unknowns as possible in the innovation or startup process

– Enhance the fit to market and reduce the cost to market and time to market

– Gain a common understanding of the direc-tions of your future business

INNOVATION AND STARTUP PROJECTSStudents' Project Cases

Christian Dollworked at Siemens IT Solutions and Services while he was join-ing the EMBA program. His idea was to develop a business con-cept for Siemens that aimed at engaging and managing exter-

nal service providers throughout customer proj-ect lifecycles.

“We took advantage of the innovation processes and tools recommended by our project advisors. Methods like mood-boards, storytelling, brain-storming and especially the use of prototypes as an integrated innovation approach worked extremely well together.”

Most of the methods Christian applied were new to Siemens, especially the 3D LEGO proto-type, which helped him and his team to work out and present the main ideas of the new business concept. “Prototypes of this kind are incredibly effective in making abstract and virtual concepts transparent and understandable to all the impor-tant stakeholders.” This approach allowed Chris-tian to come up with a detailed model in only five months using just half a man-year of a team of eight employees. “We generated several new ideas and most of them were implemented by three different departments within Siemens IT Solutions and Services.”

Catharina van Delden is founder and CEO of innosabi. Innosabi uses Web 2.0 technol-ogies to enable active coopera-tion between companies and their customers in the early phases of product development.

This is how new products and services can be brought to market with a higher rate of success.

The learnings and tools from the Executive MBA in Innovation and Business Creation have been a major success factor in innosabi’s develop-ment. “The program helped me to make our whole business concept way more scalable. We developed our company from a consulting busi-ness to a technology driven business.”

Founded in December 2010, innosabi already looks back on successful product and service developments for companies like Coty Beauty, Continental, Messe München and LIDL. In 2011, it was named the best German ITC startup by the German Ministry of Economics and Technol-ogy. By the end of 2013, innosabi launched two new platforms to support B2B and B2C innova-tion processes – and is already working on the next projects.

Five years after her graduation, the EMBA pro-gram is still influencing Catharina’s work: “The connections I made have proven invaluable: I still profit from the networks I formed and from the frequent exchange with my fellow class-mates and other alumni.”

Jan Philipp Hinrichsis founder and CEO of Captcha-Ad. CaptchaAd is the first com-pany to combine enhanced spam protection with interactive video advertising in order to in-crease website security, facili-

tate the user’s visit and ensure a more conscious perception of advertising by the user. Captcha-Ad invented this kind of spam protection and captcha advertising. The technology is patent pending.

“I wanted to prepare CaptchaAd for the diverse challenges that lie ahead and for continued business development, while at the same time developing myself on a personal level“, says Jan Philipp describing what he hoped the MBA would help him achieve. The program’s Busi-ness Design approach supported him with its structure and system while his project advisor reflected with him on the different areas of the CaptchaAd business model. They reflected on the strategic development of CaptchaAd fo-cused on important skills for the future, next strategic steps and other issues. They also con-sidered how the company might grow over the coming years and what markets CaptchaAd could enter.

During his time at the Executive MBA program, Jan Philipp gained seed funding for CaptchaAd, also thanks to the communication strategies he had developed in the numerous Unternehmer-TUM workshops and courses on pitching. “Live-ly discussions and exchanges with other stu-dents, business founders and entrepreneurs really helped me evaluate and implement some important strategic decisions“, he says.

Individual Innovation and Startup Advisory

Every innovation and startup project is different and needs individual support. During the project work you will be paired with a project advisor, who will be your first point of contact for ques-tions about your individual innovation or startup project. All project advisors are experienced ex-perts from UnternehmerTUM – the Center for Innovation and Business Creation at TUM. They have wide-ranging ex perience in building up young companies as well as market expertise and additional skills in strategy, finance, product and service development, marketing, sales and HR. The project advisors have worked on inno-vation projects with a large network of industry partners (including many DAX-listed corpora-tions) for a number of years.

The Project Advisors will… – Guide the students through their innovation

and startup projects

– Support the students in developing the proj-ect roadmap and managing the project

– Advise on the project progress

– Faciliate expertise, i.e. topic related at UnternehmerTUM or external experts

– Offer access to the UnternehmerTUM infra-structure, i.e. rapid prototyping tools, inno-vation labs, meeting rooms, and the recently opened MakerSpace, a 1500-square-meter high-tech workshop providing members with access to machines, tools and software as well as a creative community.

Denise SchusterClass of 2013

“Before the EMBA program I led a medium sized company as CEO for six years and parallel

started an own company. However, I didn’t have a vision or a plan how to actually establish a real startup. This knowledge, brought to me by great professors with great experience combined with the spirit of UC Berkeley and Silicon Valley start ups, introduced me to a totally new way of thinking. In the class I found amazing people who also had that spirit and we took the chance to found our own startup UnserParkplatz.de. I am very proud and happy since I developed myself and my company greatly while being a part of the EMBA Class of 2013.”

“Years ago, I joined an innovative agile US-based startup that grew fast and became one of

the world’s top three network companies. I left this company to build my own startup or to lead innovation in an exciting startup. During this pro-cess of change, I enrolled for the EMBA in In-novation and Business Creation to complement my practical experiences with theoretical knowl-edge and enlarge my entrepreneurial network. Inspired by the EMBA program, I made contact with a Munich based startup called MYBEST-BRANDS. Finally, I was offered the leadership role and became CEO of MYBESTBRANDS in January 2013. Looking back, the Executive MBA played a major role within my pivotal change process.”

Frédéric StrassClass of 2015

“I have been working at a typical German mid sized company for the last 10 years, becoming an

outdated creature of habit. But failing to adapt your business model in a rapidly changing envi-ronment will definitely cause trouble. I therefore opted for the EMBA as it enables you to gear up with the latest toolkit and apply this outside the classroom. But most importantly, the great-est experience took place outside the class-room with fellow team members. Exchanging positions with professionals from totally differ-ent backgrounds, will definitely enrich and re-fresh you on a personal level as well as make you want to leave comfort zones and explore new things.”

Aylin Koca GüleşirClass of 2014

“I chose to attend this EMBA program after deciding to co-found my high-tech startup in

Munich and before I moved here from the Neth-erlands. This turned out to be perfect timing: The program provided me with practical insights into entrepreneurial management, the relevant network, links and entry points to the German market. Also, while letting me experience the best of Silicon Valley within a great team of fel-low MBAs and benefiting from endless support from the program organizers in everything I did. Especially enjoyable for me was the diversity in the class, the well-seasoned professionals in-volved helping to immediately form an invaluable and accountable network. Highly recommended!”
