A LETTER FROM THE CHAIRS
Dear SPAWC 2016 participant,
On behalf of the organization committee, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University, in Edinburgh UK, for the 17th IEEE International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications, SPAWC 2016. We are looking forward to hosting the world leading experts in signal processing for communications and networking who will share the very latest research advances with you during the event.
Building on the tradition and success of previous SPAWCs, the workshop features an exciting three-day program of tutorials, poster presentations and plenary talks on timely topics. The workshop program spans a diverse set of exciting topics related to signal processing for communications including many emerging enabling topics. This trend is reflected in the plenary talks, in the tutorials, in the special sessions as well as in the regular sessions.
The community has shown great interest to contribute to SPAWC 2016 with a total of 170 submitted papers to the open track and special sessions, of which 97 have been accepted into the program, along with 86 invited special session papers. Based on this, we have composed a high quality technical program and we wish to especially express our gratitude to our Special Session Chair Chandra Murthy, for his help in putting together many high quality special sessions, with help from the many Special Session Organizers. We also thank all of the Plenary Speakers, the Tutorial Speakers, and all authors who have contributed to the program. We also wish to acknowledge the reviewing work by the members of the SPCOM Technical Committee, and the hard work of all the organizing committee members and in particular Christos, Faheem and Sudip.

We currently have a total of 188 registered participants joining us to make this a successful event. Several people and organizations have stepped up to support this year’s SPAWC. We are very grateful to InfoVaya for providing the Online Access System for SPAWC program delivery and for organising a career event site for attendees. A special thanks goes to the Lord Provost, the City of Edinburgh, who very generously offered to host a Civic Welcome Reception in the City Chambers in additional to the Edinburgh Castle Welcome Dinner Reception. Device-Centric Cooperation in Wireless Networks

Summary
Conventional cellular architectures have long promoted a network-centric view, whereby communication with a user device is almost always placed under the tight control of an element of the infrastructure such as a base station and where the optimization of global spectral resources is managed centrally from the network itself. This situation is changing with the new opportunities offered by direct device communications in 5G and beyond.
When suitably exploited, direct communications between devices can enable a powerful collective intelligence among user terminals, allowing them to cooperate effectively in view of improving the link quality, the spectral density or the power efficiency. Because device cooperation is carried out on the basis of partial and noisy channel state measurements, a framework for robust decentralized decision making is essential. This problem is rooted in so-called coordination and team decision theories, which have GAINED IMPORTANCE LATELY and attracted interest from industrial and academics due to wide-reaching applications, even beyond telecoms.
This tutorial is dedicated to device-centric cooperation and their application in 5G and beyond. As an introduction, we will introduce some key challenges of wireless communication and show how fundamental limitations of wireless networks can be addressed via DEVICE-CENTRIC COOPERATION. This includes wide ranging issues such as interference management, MIMO feedback design, Massive MIMO coordination.
As a second part of the tutorial we will give an introduction to the general fields of COORDINATION AND TEAM DECISION THEORIES. We will present an overview of the different approaches, their main principles, advantages and limitations. This section provides the fundamental tools used in the rest of the tutorial, showcased in a didactic manner. Importantly, coordination and team decision theories are transversal topics which are useful to other fields as well (such as artificial intelligence, control and robotics). This cross-disciplinarily will be briefly touched upon.

In the third part, we review practical applications of DEVICE-CENTRIC COOPERATION to the problem of wireless network optimization and we show how this new way of looking at the problems can provide STRONG IMPROVEMENT and NEW INSIGHTS. Considering the most common and practically relevant scenarios (including resource allocation problems such as power control, scheduling, and beamforming), we show how RECENT PROGRESSE in the understanding of device-centric cooperation have permitted to overcome the obstacles initially formulated.
Biographies
David Gesbert (IEEE Fellow) is Professor and Head of the Mobile Communications Department, EURECOM, France. He obtained the Ph.D. degree from Ecole Nationale Superieure des Telecommunications, France, in 1997. From 1997 to 1999 he has been with the Information Systems Laboratory, Stanford University. In 1999, he was a founding engineer of Iospan Wireless Inc, San Jose, California, a start-up company pioneering MIMO-OFDM (now Intel). Between 2001 and 2003 he has been with the Department of Informatics, University of Oslo as an adjunct professor. D. Gesbert has published about 250 papers and several patents all in the area of signal processing, communications, and wireless networks. He was named in the 2014 Thomson-Reuters List of Highly Cited Researchers in Computer Science. Since 2015, he holds an ERC Advanced grant on the topic of "Smart Device Communications". D. Gesbert was a co-editor of several special issues on wireless networks and communications theory, for JSAC (2003, 2007, 2009), EURASIP Journal on Applied Signal Processing (2004, 2007), Wireless Communications Magazine (2006). He served on the IEEE Signal Processing for Communications Technical Committee, 2003-2008. He was an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications and the EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking. He authored or co-authored papers winning the 2015 IEEE Best Tutorial Paper Award (Communications Society), 2012 SPS Signal Processing Magazine Best Paper Award, 2004 IEEE Best Tutorial Paper Award (Communications Society), 2005 Young Author Best Paper Award for Signal Proc. Society journals, and paper awards at conferences 2011 IEEE SPAWC, 2004 ACM MSWiM workshop. He co-authored the book “Space time wireless communications: From parameter estimation to MIMO systems”, Cambridge Press, 2006. In 2013, he was a General Chair for the IEEE Communications Theory Workshop, and a Technical Program Chair for the Communications Theory Symposium of ICC2013. He is a Technical Program Chair for IEEE ICC 2017, to be held in Paris.
Paul de Kerret (IEEE Member) is currently a research Engineer at EURECOM working on the ERC funded project on Smart Device Communications. He graduated in 2009 from Télécom Bretagne and obtained a diploma degree in electrical engineering from the Munich University of Technology (TUM). In 2010, he has been a research assistant at the Institute for theoretical Information Technology, RWTH Aachen University. He obtained in 2013 his Ph. D. degree from EURECOM under the supervision of David Gesbert and then pursued its work there for one year as a post-doctoral researcher. From December 2014 to July 2015, he was working as an assistant Professor at Télécom Bretagne. He has been working in several key European projects focused on the cooperation of transmitters in future networks. He is co-author of several articles in prestigious IEEE journals and has published 20 articles in highly selective IEEE conferences. He was co-presenter of a tutorial at ICASSP 2014, ICC 2015 and Eusipco 2015.

Signal Processing Tools for Big Network Data Analytics

Summary
We live in an era of data deluge, where pervasive interconnected sensors collect massive amounts of information on every bit of our lives. Accordingly, propelled by emergent social networking services as well as high-definition streaming platforms, communication networks have evolved from specialized, research and tactical transmission systems to large-scale and highly complex interconnections of intelligent devices that carry massive volumes of multimedia traffic. While Big Data can be definitely perceived as a big blessing, big challenges also arise with large-scale network data. The sheer volume of data makes it often impossible to run analytics using a central processor and storage unit, and distributed processing with parallelized multi-processors is preferred while data themselves are stored in the cloud. As many sources continuously generate data in real time, analytics must often be performed “on-the-fly,” without an opportunity to revisit past entries. Due to their disparate origins, the resultant network datasets are often incomplete and include a sizable portion of missing entries. Overall, Big Data present challenges in which resources such as time, space, and energy, are intertwined in complex ways with data resources. As "netizens" demand a seamless networking experience with not only higher speeds, but also resilience to failures and malicious cyber-attacks, ample opportunities for data-driven signal processing (SP) research arise. This tutorial seeks to provide an overview of ongoing research in novel models applicable to a wide range of Big Data analytics problems arising with e.g., dynamic network monitoring, as well as algorithms and architectures to handle the practical challenges, while revealing fundamental limits and insights on the mathematical trade-offs involved.
Biographies
Georgios B. Giannakis (IEEE Fellow) received his Diploma in Electrical Engr. from the Ntl. Tech. Univ. of Athens, Greece, 1981. From 1982 to 1986 he was with the Univ. of Southern California (USC), where he received his MSc. in Electrical Engineering, 1983, MSc. in Mathematics, 1986, and Ph.D. in Electrical Engr., 1986. Since 1999 he has been a professor with the U. of Minnesota, where he now holds an ADC Chair in Wireless Telecommunications in the ECE Department, and serves as director of the Digital Technology Center.

His general interests span the areas of statistical signal processing, communications, and networking - subjects on which he has published more than 390 journal papers, 660 conference papers, 23 book chapters, two edited books and two research monographs (h-index=115). Current research focuses on learning from Big Data, wireless cognitive radios, and network science with applications to social, brain, and power networks with renewables. He is the (co-) inventor of 25 patents issued, and the (co-) recipient of 8 best paper awards from the IEEE Signal Processing (SP) and Communications Societies, including the G. Marconi Prize Paper Award in Wireless Communications. He also received Technical Achievement Awards from the SP Society (2000), from EURASIP (2005), a Young Faculty Teaching Award, the G. W. Taylor Award for Distinguished Research from the University of Minnesota, and the IEEE Fourier Technical Field Award (2015). He is a Fellow of EURASIP, and has served the IEEE in a number of posts, including that of a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE-SP Society. He has delivered plenary and tutorial talks in multiple IEEE Conferences.
Gonzalo Mateos (M’12) earned the B.Sc. degree from Universidad de la Republica, Uruguay, in 2005, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, in 2009 and 2011, all in electrical engineering. He joined the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY, in 2014, where he is currently an Assistant Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, as well as a member of the Goergen Institute for Data Science. During the 2013 academic year, he was a visiting scholar with the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Mateos received the Best Student Paper Award at the 2012 IEEE SPAWC, and was also a finalist of the Student Paper Contest at the 2011 IEEE DSP/SPE Workshop. His doctoral work has been recognized with the 2013 University of Minnesota's Best Dissertation Award (Honorable Mention) across all Physical Sciences and Engineering areas. His research interests lie in the areas of statistical learning from Big Data, network science, decentralized optimization, and graph signal processing, with applications in dynamic network health monitoring, social, power grid, and Big Data analytics. Dr. Mateos currently serves as Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing and EURASIP Journal on Advances on Signal Processing. He has delivered tutorial lectures in IEEE ICC 2013 and ICASSP 2014, 2015, as well as in EUSIPCO 2014, 2015.

Summary
Since Marconi demonstrated the feasibility of radio transmissions, researchers have endeavoured to fulfill the dream of flawless wireless multimedia telecommunications, creating the impression of tele-presence - at the touch of a dialling key. However, making this dream a reality required 'quantum' leaps both in digital signal processing and in its nano-electronics based implementation, facilitated by advances in science both in Edinburgh and farther afield. This process has been fuelled by a huge consumer market. Moore's law has indeed prevailed since he outlined his empirical rule-of-thumb in 1965, but based on this the scale of integration is set to depart from classical physics obeying the well-understood rules revealed by science and enter into a new world, where the traveller has to obey the sometimes strange new rules of the quantum-world. The quest for quantum-domain communication solutions was inspired by Feynman's revolutionary idea in 1985: particles such as photons or electrons might be relied upon for encoding, processing and delivering information. During the last three decades researchers and engineers often considered a pair of open problems. Firstly, classic systems relying on the efficient processing capability of quantum-search algorithms were considered in the area of quantum-assisted communications, while the branch of quantum-domain communications relies on quantum channels.
In wireless communications we often encounter large-scale search problems, some of which may be efficiently solved with the aid of bio-inspired random guided algorithms or quantum-search techniques. For example, Grover's algorithm is capable of searching through an N-element
data-base with the aid of 𝑁1/2 cost-function evaluations. Commencing with a brief historical perspective, a variety of efficient quantum-assisted solutions will be exemplified.
Biography
Lajos Hanzo FREng, FIEEE, FIET, RS Wolfson Fellow, received his 5-year Master degree in electronics from the Technical University of Budapest in 1976, his doctorate in 1983 and his Doctor of Sciences (DSc) degree in 2004. During his career in telecommunications he has held various research and academic posts in Hungary, Germany and the UK. Since 1986 he has been with the School of ECS, University of Southampton, UK, where he holds the Chair in Telecommunications. His current research interests are featured at (http://www-mobile.ecs.soton.ac.uk).

Summary
Social networks are pervasive and encompass interactions over online social media, human links in epidemic processes, terrorist cells, and collaborations among researchers. The value in understanding and predicting complex network behavior cannot be understated, thanks to the growing role of search engines, cyber warfare, online marketing, and social recommendation tools. Real-world social networks are fraught with unique challenges that limit the efficacy of contemporary tools. For example, such networks are big (billions of nodes), evolve over time, and are often not directly observable. Viewed through a statistical learning lens, many network analytics problems boil down to (non-) parametric regression and classification, dimensionality reduction, or clustering. Adopting this point of view, this talk will put forth novel learning approaches for network visualization, anomaly and community detection, prediction of network processes, and dynamic network inference. Key emphasis will be placed on parsimonious models exploiting sparsity, low rank, or low-dimensional manifolds, attributes that have been shown useful for complexity reduction. The merits of the novel schemes will be demonstrated on both simulated and real-world social networks.

On The Optimality Of Treating Interference As Noise: A New Link Scheduling And Power Control For D2D Communications

Summary
For single-antenna Gaussian interference channels, we consider the problem of the Generalized Degrees of Freedom (GDoF) region achievable by treating Interference as Gaussian Noise (TIN). We show that the TIN power control problem can be cast into an assignment problem, such that the globally optimal power allocation variables can be obtained by well-known polynomial time algorithms (e.g., centralized Hungarian method or distributed Auction algorithm). Furthermore, a previously known expression of the TIN-Achievable GDoF region (TINA region) can be substantially simplified with the aid of maximum weighted matchings. We also provide conditions under which the TINA region is a convex polytope. Building on the above insights, we consider the problem of joint link scheduling and power control in wireless networks, which has been widely studied as a basic physical layer mechanism for device-to-device (D2D) communications. The idea is to select at each scheduling slot a subnetwork for which the TINA region is a convex polytope, and then optimize the transmit power of the selected links in order to maximize the corresponding weighted sum rate. We propose a low-complexity GDoF-based distributed link scheduling and power control mechanism (ITLinQ+) that improves upon previously proposed schemes, including the powerful heuristic approach of Qualcomm known as FlashLinQ. More notably, the energy efficiency of the newly proposed ITLinQ+ scheme is substantially larger than that of FlashLinQ. This feature is particularly desirable for D2D networks formed by battery-powered devices.
Biography
Giuseppe Caire was born in Torino, Italy, in 1965. He received the B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Politecnico di Torino (Italy), in 1990, the M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University in 1992 and the Ph.D. from Politecnico di Torino in 1994. He has been a post-doctoral research fellow with the European Space Agency (ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands) in 1994-1995, Assistant Professor in Telecommunications at the Politecnico di Torino, Associate Professor at the University of Parma, Italy, Professor with the Department of Mobile Communications at the Eurecom Institute, Sophia-Antipolis, France, Professor of Electrical Engineering with the Viterbi School of Engineering, University of Southern California, Los Angeles and he is currently an Alexander von Humboldt Professor with the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department of the Technical University of Berlin, Germany. He served as Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions

on Communications in 1998-2001 and as Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory in 2001-2003. He received the Jack Neubauer Best System Paper Award from the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society in 2003, the IEEE Communications Society & Information Theory Society Joint Paper Award in 2004 and in 2011, the Okawa Research Award in 2006, the Alexander von Humboldt Professorship in 2014, and the Vodafone Innovation Prize in 2015. Giuseppe Caire is a Fellow of IEEE since 2005. He has served in the Board of Governors of the IEEE Information Theory Society from 2004 to 2007, and as officer from 2008 to 2013. He was President of the IEEE Information Theory Society in 2011. His main research interests are in the field of communications theory, information theory, channel and source coding with particular focus on wireless communications.

Summary
Studies of the degrees of Freedom (DoF) of wireless communication networks often focus on clever ways to exploit an abundance of channel knowledge which is rarely available in practice while ignoring topological aspects that are the basis of most robust interference management schemes. Topological interference management refers to a complementary perspective where the focus is on exploiting network topology under limited channel knowledge. Progress in this direction includes the discovery that optimal interference avoidance is essentially the index coding problem, that interference alignment plays a central role in this problem even though no precise knowledge of channel realizations is available, a new set of conditions for the approximate optimality of treating interference as noise, novel outer bounds based on aligned image sets, and connections to network coding problems such as distributed storage repair, multiple unicasts and private information retrieval. This talk will summarize the advances in topological interference management and highlight some of the key open problems.

Playfair Library Hall is one of Playfair’s masterpieces, with its barrel-vaulted neo-classical interior ceiling and running to more than 190 feet in length, it is regarded as one of Scotland’s finest public rooms. It was used as a working library from the 1820s right through until the 1960s, when the University’s main collection was moved to George Square. It is now used to host events and prestigious lectures.
