elcome to the 15th Annual Keyboard Wellness Seminar founded and presented by pianist and renowned pedagogue Sheila Paige. Ms. Paige has over 35 years

of experience in the Taubman Approach and an extensive background in Alexander Technique. In 1995, Sheila Paige began presenting workshops on the Taubman Approach; over the years demand for her workshops and private lessons grew. In 2000, Ms. Paige realized her dream of organizing an annual seminar based on a multi-disciplined approach to learning and began the Piano Wellness Seminar. It became the Keyboard Wellness Seminar in 2009 with the addition of organ, and now computer use is also included.

What sets this seminar apart and makes it unique from other conferences and festivals is the inclusion of many supportive and synergistic disciplines. Better use of the body helps all pianists to play with more ease, gain a better technique, and achieve the goal for which all musicians strive: a technique so comfortable that it leaves the performer free to think only about the music. Sessions given by Ms. Paige on the Taubman Approach and her other innovative strategies are complemented with Alexander Technique sessions given by Phyllis Richmond, MSTAT. But because the body is connected to the mind and the emotions, or, if you will, the spirit, these areas are also explored. Developmental Fitness, presented by Vicki Conway, is a performance enhancement and stress reduction program based upon the principle of neural plasticity. Our early childhood experiences, along with thirteen developmental skills, establish the neural wiring patterns upon which we base all

future learning. However, these patterns can be modified and improved upon throughout life. Using integrative movements and simple manipulatives, this program makes the entire body the instrument of learning. If you know how your brain, body, and emotions are interrelated, you can rapidly improve your rate of learning while reducing stress and anxiety. Participants have access to a week of biofeedback training, presented by Robert Bonham. The training uses HeartMath technology to demonstrate the intimate connection between feelings and the physical heart and brain. FreezeFrame then teaches techniques to stay in the zone and reduce performance anxiety. We also have sessions on Meditation, Reflexology, Nutrition, Reiki, iPad for pianists, T’ai Chi, Peaceful Warrior Workout, Tune-up Tips to Optimize Your Day, and Memorization. Disciplines in other years have included Bodymapping, Egoscue Method, Massage Therapy, and Pilates. Of course, there are also master classes, private lessons with an experienced faculty, concerts, and the energy, camaraderie, and support that one expects to experience at piano festivals. Sheila Paige and the Keyboard Wellness Seminar faculty are dedicated to helping today’s pianists “create a wellness legacy for the future.” Join us for a week of playing, learning, performing, inspiration, and excitement!

ROBERT BONHAMheArThmATh And FreezeFrAme

Do our thoughts and feelings affect our performance? Of course they do, and often in ways that compromise our clarity and focus. Can we do anything about these disruptive challenges? Yes. The intimate connection between feel-ings, thoughts, and the physical heart and the brain can be easily demonstrated with HeartMath, a biofeedback program. A recent doctoral dissertation amply proved that consistent practice with an emWave heart monitor can be effective in reducing performance anxiety. FreezeFrame teaches techniques to help you stay in an optimal zone. This is good for all pianists, anytime, on and off stage.

Developmental Fitness is a performance enhancement, sensory-motor integration, and stress reduction program based upon the principle of neural plasticity. Our early childhood experiences, along with thirteen developmental skills and dominance profiles, establish the neural wiring patterns upon which we base all future learning. However, we continue to elaborate and modify our neural connections and patterns throughout our lives. The Developmental Fitness program makes the whole body the instrument of learning. It uses integrative movements, with and without manipulatives, to stimulate our kinesthetic sense and enhance the neural network communication system between the brain, the senses, and the muscles of the body. The role of emotions is also addressed as our emotions monitor all our thoughts and actions, releasing neurotransmittersaffecting both the mind and the body.

nATure’s sunshine/reFlexology

Tom Greenfield has two degrees from TCU, a B.A. in English and a Bachelor of Music in theory and violin. He has played professionally with both the San Antonio and Fort Worth symphonies. One of the reasons that he stopped playing many years ago was pain. It gradually increased from a sometime annoy-ing ache in the left shoulder and neck to a full time, painful muscle contraction that resulted in the left shoulder being elevated almost two inches above the other. The cessation of professional playing stopped a lot of the pain but not all of it. Next came low back and sciatic nerve pain that was occasionally devastating. Mr. Greenfield was driven to find alternative solutions to surgery and was pleased to learn of the tremendous benefits of massage, reflexology, yoga breath-work, particular exercise routines like Somatics, nutrition, and herbs and vitamins. The self-application of all these disciplines gave Mr. Greenfield a virtually pain-free existence that he enjoys sharing with his clients. He uses this knowledge to help his violin students avoid the same mistakes that he made.

Janie Keys received training in all 3 levels of Reiki in 1998, and has since used it in her daily life for self healing and to help friends and family. Reiki is a Japanese word that can be translated as universal life force energy. It is a source of stress reduction and relaxation which can improve health and restore a sense of well-being. In the session, we will cover the development of the practice of Reiki in the US, the nature of the healing energy and how it is transmitted, and how the effects of Reiki are experienced by both recipient and practitioner.

Ms. Keys has two degrees from the University of Texas at Austin - a Bachelor of Arts in French and a Master of Music in Piano Pedagogy.
