Newsletter of Tennis Seniors New South Wales. November 2017
D ear Members,
We had another eventful
year starting with the
Teams and Individual
events in Adelaide. All players
performed admirably with NSW
players winning many Events again.
Our Tournaments in coastal areas are
still going strong, and it is pleasing to
see that our numbers are slowly
increasing at our inland Country
venues. We still need members to
encourage a friend or team mate to
participate then it would certainly
boost the numbers further, I can assure
you that these events are great. Dubbo
was a great success with Karen &
Glenn Armstrong at the helm, making
us all feel very welcome.
The State Championships were a huge
success at Pennant Hills. With fine
weather it was a great weekend and the
standard of play was exceptional.
Once again Tennis NSW have been
very supportive and our thanks go to
them for an excellent working
relationship. We thank Tennis Ranch
Gladesville, Merchant of Tennis
Beecroft, Bunnings, and especially
Strathfield Sports Club for their
generosity and support. Eastwood-
Thornleigh District TA is looking at a
few improvements for 2018, with
Mary Baker taking over the
President’s role.
I must congratulate our Tournament
Committee Robyn Castle, Arthur
Olsen and Steve Longworth for the
outstanding job they did in running our
Championships, they had everything
working out to perfection.
Our representatives travelled at
different times to Florida this year –
the Super-Seniors won a GOLD
medal, in the Bitsy Grant Cup (M75),

Our next Big Event is the Australian
Championships to be held at the Gold
Coast in January. We have 28 Teams
entered from NSW and I wish everyone
in the Teams and Individual Events the
best of luck.
The Committee has worked well
together over the past year, and it has
been a pleasure working with them.
We welcomed Brian Loader when
Craig Edwards moved to Tasmania.
We are committed to improvement so
your suggestions are always
welcomed.
I wish all our members a safe and
happy Christmas and hope to see
everyone on the Court in 2018.

AGM - at Cintra Park, Gipps Street Concord
Sunday December 10
In September a merry band of
NSW Seniors set out for Brussels
to support the Aussies in the Davis
Cup semi finals against Belgium.
The group comprised Mary &
Gerry Baker, Jenny Gerardis (and
husband Ross), Clare Wagemans &
Judy Halbedl.
Having allied ourselves to the “We
the People” organisation, we
donned our bright green shirts,
learned all the appropriate chants
(well, most of them, anyway!)
and attempted to spur our boys on
to victory and a coveted place in
the finals.
Although we were ultimately un-
successful in getting them over
the line, the experience was ex-
tremely satisfying as our team
certainly “gave their all” in a
thoroughly entertaining encoun-
ter. Unfortunately the opposition
played “out of their heads”, no
doubt inspired by the electric at-
mosphere that the thousands of
Belgian supporters created and
which grew in intensity over the
course of the tie. Our crowd con-
tingent of roughly five hundred
Aussies was somewhat vocally
overwhelmed, especially during
the reverse singles on the crucial
last day.
One of our fans made a lasting im-
pression, though, assuming the
guise of a kangaroo. He was un-
surprisingly very popular with
Aussie and Belgian fans alike with
regard to “photo opportunities”.
Altogether the experience was a
very positive one with a lot of good
-natured banter being exchanged
between the two sets of supporters.
We're looking forward to more of
the same next year!
Judy Halbedl

2017 Super Seniors -
La Nona, FLORIDA
The ITF World Championships were played in
Miami Florida, which included Teams and
Individuals. From Oct 8 - 21. Australians won
GOLD in the Bitsy Grant Cup (M75) - Our Kitty
Godfree (W70) won Bronze. The Team consisting
of Bob Howes (VIC), Bruce Rehn (SA), Don Biddle
(NSW) and John Mansfield (VIC) showed how
much they thrive on the big stage by winning
their second ITF Super Seniors Bitsy Grant Cup
in Florida USA, having previously won the event in
Turkey 2014.
With a No 1 seeding in a field of 15 nations, they
were on a mission for a repeat success.
In the final against the Netherlands and with the singles
rubbers even, the match came down to the doubles, which
was won in straight sets by Australia and therefore THE
TROPHY!! (DB)
Julie Pratt reports:
It’s always such an honour to play for one's country and this
year at the USTA NATIONAL CAMPUS, it was just as
honourable.
This fabulous centre was only officially opened this year and it did not disappoint.
All tennis was played on 32 HAR-TRU courts (American Clay) and the surface was superb. Matches were
played in great spirit. The camaraderie amongst all countries is always brilliant and it is a buzz being part
of that atmosphere. It is so hard to describe but I feel that these World Cup events have no equal in our
schedule of Super Senior Events.
Also, the US officials were very professional and nothing was ever too much trouble. This same scenario
applies to all the staff at our accommodation, the Residence Inn. They were always there to help and no
request went unfulfilled.
I believe the World Super Seniors are back in Umag, Croatia next year and by golly, they also do a
tremendous job.
Start building your points fellow players!!
If you are one of the chosen few and it is your "maiden voyage", I promise you will not be disappointed.

NSTA Report
N orthern Suburbs Tennis Association held its inaugural
tournament on Sept 9/10 with 95 competitors which received
positive feedback from players. Paul Francis (Humpty Dumpty
CEO) indicated that he is keen to make this an annual event.
According to Tennis NSW, Paul runs the largest most successful tennis
business in the state, so this will be a welcome addition to our calendar.
Some improvements for 2018, will be made to increase the numbers. A few
improvements can be made which will boost the number of players in 2018.
There was no Saturday afternoon play and this can be remedied with better
planning next year. Paul put on a free bbq lunch with drinks on the Saturday
to partially make up for this.
Two of the biggest clubs in the
district, Kooroora & Lane Cove
moved their annual challenge
match to the Sunday of the
tournament taking probably 20
players away from our event. This won't happen next year with earlier
advertising of the event.
A number of players asked if next year's tournament could be a ranking
tournament. Given the lack of ranking tournaments in Sydney this
would also boost numbers. G Sticka

T he October Long
Weekend was blessed
with sensational sunny
days and players found
it quite warm on the court. There
were some surprises in the Men’s
Singles especially Tim Fraser, who
made it to the Final – giving Robert
Kilborn a run for his money too!
Ivan Stride had a 3-setter to
defeat Chris Gillis, as did Steve
Myers over Wayne Pascoe, Tony
Grana defeated Mike Clayton and
Gordon Waygood had his first
victory over Dennis Bindon after
letting Dennis choose the court on
his third attempt.
Nicole Pinchbeck and Mel Legend
battled it out in the 35-50WS.

the tennis was most enjoyable
to watch.
Doubles in M45, M50 and M55

narrow margin. Exciting tennis!
Elliott & Stride 10-7, Vickery &

Owen Morgan and Nev Rodwell
who defeated Graeme Sticka
and Geoff Banner 10-8. Ian

Mike Pyne and John McCullah 7-

Sisters Nicole Pinchbeck and
Monique Wakefield went down
fighting in W35 to World

defeat in the Mixed as well,
playing with Edward Catusanu (a
new recruit to Seniors) to Antony

match to watch – observed by
many supporters on “the hill” above

“What is a Nonogenarian”? In Tennis Seniors’ terms the person is a LEGEND! Ninety years young!
To name the four who have attained that grand age of Ninety years in the past 12 months:
2016 - Doug Corbett on November 19th; Beryl Rocavert on Dec 12th
2017 – Colin Luck on March 11th and Jim Willett, June 20th
We also have the former Treasurer Marge Luck (being cared for by husband Col) who is 93! Marge is no longer
able to play tennis, however Col receives respite and is able to play tennis several times a week.
Frank Pitt from Forster turned 95 on Sept 14 this year, still going strong, although no longer playing tennis. He
was scooting around on his “ride-on - “gopher” – terrorizing the neighbourhood, until his son took him “under his
wing” and relocated Frank to Newcastle!
Doug Corbett plays tennis several times a week with a group of friends who are a few years his junior, and he
keeps them on their toes!

C ongratulations to Adrienne Avis on receiving accolades from Tennis NSW for 2017 Outstanding 35+ Senior.
Adrienne was also selected in the Final three for TA’s Newcombe Medal for Over 35s. This included a paid trip to Melbourne to attend the glittering Function on Monday November 27, in front of Tennis Greats. There is also a “glittering ceremony” - on the same night, called “The Champions of Sport” at Rosehill Racecourse Function Centre. Ady needs TWO of herself! Luckily Arthur & Robyn can attend to accept the award on her behalf , it will be our pleasure! A “Dress-Up” night to remember!

Our Vice President Ian King was recently diagnosed with an aggressive
cancer in his oesophagus. Merilyn is supporting him through the
treatment - (radiation and chemotherapy), which seems to be giving him
some relief - their new apartment is a haven for them with views to
Wollongong’s ocean beach. We wish them both well.
Kristan Renneberg is on the road to recovery - after suffering an
episode which had the doctors dumbfounded. All sorts of tests were
carried out, and it seems that his medications were “acting up”. Myra was
Queen of the ward at John Hunter Hospital while Geoff and Louisa kept
Kris under control.
Paul Carpenter has been recovering from knee surgery, and is hoping to
get back into tennis very shortly. Rumour has it that he’s looking for
partners in the New Year. Aust Open perhaps Paul?
Hi there once again,
Everyone is gearing up for the
Gold Coast with enthusiasm, which
is great to see! As for this year’s
State Dinner, there will be a list
circulated of those who have paid
- so I ask that you check the list
and let me know if you are not on
it and should be!!!
The TWO new Country
tournaments were highly
successful, Dave Ridley and his
Goulburn volunteers excelled
themselves, and Natasha Kersten
conducted Tweed Heads in June in
a very professional manner.
Thanks everyone!
NEW shirts will be available soon
for those who have ordered them.
Please note: it is NOT necessary
to purchase new ones if you
already own the original shirts and
are happy with them.
