Use WSIB guidelines as a minimum:• Written standard outlining expectations• Step by step instructions for particular task or

process• Roles and responsibilities (who does what, when)• Workplace rules • Clear and concise information• Reasonable expectations that are measurable• What is required to implement the policy

Step 1 - Set Standards

• Goal of the program• First Aid Procedures– First aid Station – include what equipment is available e.g.

first aid boxes, room, stretcher, blanket, personal protective equipment, etc

– Inspection – assign responsibility– Training – what level of training is required as per Reg.

1101– Record – how to ensure records are maintained

• Post in case of injury poster near the first aid station and other conspicuous area in the workplace

• Post valid first aid certificates• Communicate information to all staff at meetings,

memos, etc.

Step 2 - Communicate

• Train to the appropriate level– 5 or less workers per shift – emergency first aid– 15 or less workers per shift – standard first aid– 200 or less workers per shift – standard first aid– 200 or more workers per shift – nurse or dedicated first aider

• Must be trained by WSIB recognized training provider• Ensure trained personnel available to assist employees• Consider evening shift, locations with less than 5 employees,

vehicles, etc.• Maintain records of all training & certificates• Post near firs aid station• Keep copies in the SG binder (optional)

• Quarterly inspection of first aid boxes• Annual review of program– Review trends– Is the element actually implemented and working– Is training up to date

• Keep track and document these evaluations

Step 4 - Evaluate

• Recognize everyone who contributed by meeting and/or surpassing the element goals

• Make changes and improvements• Can be completed by:– Letter/memo from president, health & safety awards,

public recognition, i.e. coffee & donuts for JHSC and/or employees, staff meeting, newsletter article, bulletin board display

Step 5 - Acknowledge Success & Make Improvements

• Written standard that include roles and responsibilities for – Training– MSDS– Labels or identifying controlled or consumer

products

• Inform employees about standard• Post on bulletin board, newsletter , etc.• Discuss at team meetings• Ensure products are labelled or identified• Ensure MSDS are available and unexpired (less that 3

years)

Step 2 - Communicate

• Who needs to be trained• What information is required• How will training be done• Who will conduct the training• What resources are available• Keep a record of training material, date and

participants• Train in all locations

Step 3- Training

• Review program annually in consultation with JHSC– Number of incidents involving chemicals– Concerns from staff– Inspection reports– Number of staff trained

Step 4- Evaluate

• Recognize everyone who contributed by meeting and/or surpassing the element goals– Issue certificate of attendance

• Make changes and improvements– Follow-up on concerns from staff– Publish achievements in newsletter article, bulletin board,

JHSC minutes etc.

Step 5 - Acknowledge Success & Make Improvements

• Meet or exceed legislative requirements• Meet or exceed requirements from SG guidelines– Complete 5 steps for 5 elements– Attend 3 meetings– Participate in validation audits

• Keep record of all activities (See sample training matrix)

• Implement all elements to all sites/ branches/ locations• Accept PSHSA consultant visit
