The {Re}HAPPENING is a creative collaboration set within the historic and inspirational second campus of Black Mountain College, known as Lake Eden. Every year, on the first Saturday in April, artists come together from various genres and disciplines to cross-pollinate and draw energy and inspiration from this historic and beautiful mountain setting. Now in its sixth year, the {Re}HAPPENING has organically grown and developed as an innovative art-based fundraising collaboration between the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center and the Media Arts Project.

The {Re}HAPPENING is part art event, part fundraiser and part community instigator. The event invites collaboration and experimentation among artists of all disciplines. Bonds between the artists and the historically rich location are created and strengthened throughout the weekend. New collaborations produce work that expands the ability of each individual, combining talents, strengths and ideas in the spirit of Black Mountain College.

About Black Mountain CollegeBlack Mountain College (1933-1957) existed for a mere 24 years, but in that short time this small experimental college produced a legacy that makes it central to American culture in multiple ways. While often thought of as an art school, in actuality the arts were just one important aspect of an overarching liberal arts education emphasizing the broader area of the humanities. The college’s influence on the arts and education continues to this day. From the centrally important teachers such as John Andrew Rice, Josef Albers and Charles Olson through other important figures such as Robert Creeley, Mary Caroline (M.C.) Richards, Buckminster Fuller, Merce Cunningham and John Cage, to the important students such as Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, Francine du Plessix Gray, Arthur Penn, Dorothea Rockburne, Jonathan Williams and Suzi Gablik, Black Mountain College influenced American culture through advances in educational practice, the visual and performing arts as well as literature.

About Black Mountain College Museum + Arts CenterThe Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center (BMCM+AC) preserves and continues the unique legacy of educational and artistic innovation of Black Mountain College. We achieve our mission through collection, conservation and educational activities including exhibitions, publications and public programs.

About the Media Arts ProjectThe Media Arts Project cultivates innovative arts & technology in western North Carolina. The MAP provides exhibition programming, professional development, outreach and education. We are driven by the belief that the media arts are integral to the vibrant cultural and economic life of the region.
