Last Week’s Program Law Day Honors

By Lee Coggin The American Bar Association

and the Muskegon County Bar Association celebrated May 1 as “Law Day” with an essay, speech, and art contest for area element-ary, middle, and high school students. This year’s theme was “Realizing the Dream: Equality for All.”

Contestants were challenged with topics designed to stretch their understanding of the constitution and the hurdles to achieving equality. Essay contestants had to discuss the fairness of Michigan’s midnight curfew for students below the age of 18. Speech contestants had to discuss the constitutional appropriateness of using race-based, affirmative action criteria in college admissions standards.

Allison Rolewicz, from Whitehall, was selected as the first

place winner in the essay contest and was on hand to read her winning

essay, “As the Sun Sets.” Allison’s essay argued that curfews can theoretically address the problem of unsupervised youth being out too late by imposing a routine and time restriction upon them. However,

she said the Michigan law does not achieve that goal because it has too many exceptions and is not applied consistently by all municipalities. Therefore, it only adds more uncertainty and does not provide

any real benefits. Allison was accompanied by her mother Carey Rolewicz to the Club meeting.

Hayley Mohr, from Calvary Christian

School, was the first place winner in the speech contest. Hayley was accompanied by her mother Beth Zelenka. Hayley delivered her speech challenging the appropriateness of race-based criteria standards in college admissions. She argued that fairness requires the use of objective, merit criteria alone. Hayley’s has two adopted brothers from Ethiopia. She believed that race-based criteria would be seen as demeaning and insulting to her brothers who want to be judged on the quality of their work alone.

Other essay contest winners included third place winner Marissa LeVasseur, from Whitehall. Other speech contest winners included second place winner Tessa Jazdzyk, from Ravenna, accompanied by her mother Marla Jazdzyk; third place winner Megan Beals, from Calvary

Christian, accompanied by her mother Julie Beals, and fourth place winner Emma Davis, from Ravenna.

Montague Social Studies teacher Dave Vermeulen thanked the Club for helping to sponsor a contest which fosters critical-thinking skills and true scholarship. DJ Hilson, Jerry Conrad, John Noling, and Peg West also thanked the Club for its financial support of the Law Day contests. They also honored Troy Love from Whitehall Middle School, with the Golden Apple Award; Kevin Eaton, from the Juvenile Court Probation Office with the Frank D. Scott Award, and Kyleen Gee, from the Child Abuse Council, with the Liberty Bell

Award. The Muskegon

County Bar Association will be sponsoring its golf outing on June 5, 2013, at 1:00pm, at the Old Channel Trail Golf Course. The cost is $75 per person, and proceeds will help support scholarships for next year’s Law Day contest. Contact Kevin M.

Huss at 231-724-4320 for more information about entering.
