Col. Jim Eskew, Arena Director THE ARENA DIRECTOR
The Arena Director is the man who is respons ible for the clockwise precision and smoothness of each performance of the Rodeo, as unfolded to the spectator. This is no small task, for it must be borne in mind that the Rodeo is truly an im-promptu performance and completely unrehearsed.
It takes executive ability to handle the hundreds of cowboy and cowgirl contestants and at the same time look ·after many hundred head of stock And it takes great showmanship to make up a program consisting of a series of contests and arrange it in such a manner that it r esults in a smooth presentation and thoroughly thrilling en-tertainment.
CoL Jim E skew, the- Arena Director , is a well known Texas rancher, a former contes tant, and seems to be a born showman. He knows cattle, horses a nd the Rodeo game in its entirety and definitely proves his qualifications for his important post with the performance you are about to witness.

WESTERN LINGO By Ramon F. Adams
Alkali~d-Acclimated to the country. Most old-timers have lived in the country so long "they know
the lizzards by their first names, 'cept maybe the young set."
Bedding Out - A term often used in speaking of the round-up season, as at this time the cowboy does all his sleeping in the open,
Belly Rope-When the roper's loop slides over the shoulders of the roped animal and tightens around the belly. This act is always funny to everyone except the man doing the roping, and is the, result of using too large a loop.
Black Spot-What the cowboys call a piece of shade. Used in another sense, I heard one cowman speak of a man's reputation by saying "His past is full o' black spots."
Bronco-A wild or semi-wild horse; often con-tracted. into "bronc." From the Spanish broncho, meaning rough, rude.
Bucking Roll-A roll of blankets tied across the saddle, just behind the fork, to help wedge the rider in the saddle and make it more difficult for the horse to throw him. Sometimes it is a leather pad, stuffed with hair.
Cayusec-The name of the wild horse of Oregon. so · named after the Cayuse Indian tribe, · an eques-trian people; synonymous to mustang. Commonly used by the northern cowboy in referring to any horse. At first the term was used as a contrast of the western horse as . compared to horses brought overland from the east.
Chinook-A warm wind in the northwest; also the term for the universal Indian language under-stood by all tribes of the northwest, The word is from the Indian.
Chuck Wagon-T he mess wagon of the cow country and claimed by some to be the original cafeteria.
Cimmaron-The Mexican name for an animal, either horse, bovine, or even human, which de-serted by all his . friends, runs alone and has little

to do with the rest of his kind. The original mean-ing of the word is "wild."
Contract Buster-A man who makes his living by his ability to sit a bucking horse. He travels from ranch to ranch, breaking horses. He does most of his work at so much per head and finds employ-ment on the smaller ranches which are unable to maintain a first-class rider throughout the year. The larger ranches usually have enough top riders to do all the breaking the ranch needs.
Corral-As a noun it means an enclosure built of wooden rails which are supported by posts set firmly in the ground. The rails are usually lashed to the posts with green rawhide, which contract when they dry and make the entire structure as strong as though made of iron. As a verb, to drive into a corral. The word is from the Spanish verb corralar, meaning to drive into an enclosure.
Covered His Dog-When the rourid-up captain has gathered all the cattle in a given region he is said to have "covered his dog."
Dally-To take a half-hitch around the saddle horn with a rope after a catch is made, the loose end being held in the roper's hand so that he can let it slip in case of an emergency, or take it up shorter. Also called by the slang names of 'daled," "vuelted," "dale-vuelted" and "dolly welted"-each derived from the Spanish phrase dar la vuelta, which means to take a turn or twist with a rope.
Ear Down-The. act of distracting a horse 's at-tenfion by holding- its head down by the ears while the rider mounts. Sometimes man doing the earing will catch the tip of the ear that is above his hand with his teeth. This will cause the horse to stand very still to avoid the pain .
Four Flusher-Slang for one who bluffs. It is a poker term, meaning to draw to fill a bobtail flush and to bet after failing to fill, hence bluffing; to make a pretense of competence when incompetent.
Hackamore-A halter; corrupted from the Span-ish word jaquima (the ] pronounced like h; the qu

as k; and the accent on the fi r st syllable). It is usu-ally an ordinary halter used as a rein stead of a leading rope.
Lariat-Originally a horse-hair or grass rope used in picketing animals. The term is ofteri used in the southwes t for a cowman's rope. The name comes from the Spanish la reata, the literal meaning of which may be expressed as "the tie back." It is also called a "reata," "rita" or ''lass rope."
Mecate-(Generally pronounced "Mecarty"). A hair rope used as saddle reins with a hackamore, or as a tie or lead rope. Because a hair rope for this purpose has long been traditional there is now a tendency to call all hair ropes mecates.
Mustang-A wild horse, usually one which is not cross-bred. From the Spanish mesteno, which comes from mesta, meaning a group of horse raisers. The suffix eno mea·ns "belonging to" and so the horses that escaped form the early mestas and ran wild were called mestenos, or mustangs.
Op'ra House-The top rail of the corral fence where one can watch the riding of a bucking horse. It is a lso a time-honored conference place.
Pig gin' -string-A short rope used in hog-tying. Pinto - (From pintar, to paint) a piebald or
spotetd horse. Also called a "paint." Set Down-Being fired off a job without havii1g
a horse to ride away. In the early days, if a man thus fired had no private horse, this manner of firing often ended in a shooting match. Most ranchers recognized th e seriousness of "settin' a man afoot" and loaned him a company horse to ride to town.
Shadow Rider-A cowboy who rides along gazing at hi s own shadow. Mirrors are sometimes scarce on the range and some fellows must admire them-selves even though only by watching their shadow. Cloudy days have no silver linings for them.
Shindig-Probably from the old word "shindy," meaning a rumpus, as "to kick up a shindy." The cowboy uses the word exclusively as a dance term, and the old cowboy dance · really was a romping, stomping affair, not, as one stated, "'jes wigglin' your rump." A cowboy dance usually lasts all night. When it breaks up at daylight the ladie s retire to

""freshen"' up their spit curls and chalk th eir noses," and "sort the weaners that'h beginnin' to stir off the bed-ground," that is, pick up the children parked in one big bed. The old bow-legs on the dance floor pass the la st bottle around, saving a big drink for the fiddler to get him to play a final tune. Then they throw a stag dance, ''that's apt to be kinda rough and · end up in a wrastlin' match."
Show-bucker-A horse that bucks hard, straight away, with nose between front legs. Though not difficult to ride, he looks good from the grandstand in rodeos.
Skookum--An Indian term, meaning good, great. Throw Out-to stop a moving herd and move off
the trail. The expression is used as "throw out the cattle and build camp." Also, an animal cut from herd. '
Vaquero-The word comes from vaca (cow) with the Spanish suffix ero and means "one engaged in cows." Used with · reference to cowboys in the southwest, along Mexican border and sections of California.
Wave 'Round-To wave a hat or other object in a semi-circle from left to right, which is a sign language of the plains, meaning. that you are not wanted and to stay away.
Wrangler-A herder of the saddle horses. A cor-ruption of the Mexican's caverango, meaning host-ler. His job is considered the most menial in cow work and he doesn't stand very high in a cow camp. Yet his job is a training school and many good cowboys have had their start as a wrangler. Be-tween his herding tasks he is kept busy dragging wood and hustling water for the cook. He doesn't get much sleep and contends with many hards hips, hut his love of horses and his ambition become a cowboy keep him on the job. By studying the characteristics of each horse, he knows which are apt to be bunch quitter s, which are fighters and which are afrai d of their own shadow. Although it can rarely be said, the greattest praise that can be bestowed upon a wrangler is that "he never lost a horse."
Yaks-A. nickname given by cowboys catile that came from the Yaqui Indian country.

Trick and Fancy Riding In this exhibition the cowboys and cowgirls, with
agile g race, lend charm and beauty in a symphony of riding rhythm, their gentle, though spirited and perfectly trained cowponies contrasting so strangely and strongly from the vicious broncs. No prizes or titles are at stake.
All must be harmony and understanding between rider and horse. Through long practice, the horse knows every move its rider makes, and the rider knows to a split second what the horse will do. Without this perfect harmony and unison disaster would be fall at every turn.
The Rochester Rodeo only brings in the most expert trick and fancy riders. Last year this event proved to be one of the most popular on the pro-gram.

The Why of a Cowboy's Wearing Apparel The cowboy of the rangeland has a garb as
distinctive and practical as the uniform of a soldier. It was made for use and each article has a definite and practical need. The cowboy is one of the most unique characters in the world. there has been more verse, paintings, . stories , movies, songs and poems on him or in which he has played a leading role than on any other character. Furthermore his dress is so distitictive, so much his own, that a man wearing a broad-brimmed sombero. chaps and boots might be flashed upon the screen in most any part of the wodd and the audience would immediatelv murmur "cowboy."
For instance the high top boots are waterproof and keep the feet dry if it is necessary to wade in shallow water , or while walking on rain soaked ground The high heels of the cowboy that have come in for much discussion and many have asked the why of them and why they slant toward the center of the boot. Their purpose is twofold. first the high heels a re to keep the foot from slipping through the st irrup. also if a rider is thrown from a horse and his foot hangs in the stirrup most times the foot will come out of the boot and thus release the thrown rider and while this does not always happen before the rider has been severely trampled. it has saved many a cowboy's life. Next the long narrow high heels dig into the ground and give the roper a good firm footing· when he has roped. on foot .

The kerchief worn .ordinarily around the neck, is used by the cowboy on the range as a kind of mask over their nostrils when riding in dust caused by driving herds. It also protects the neck from the heat of the sun .
The broad-brimmed hat s are to shade the head and eyes in the hot sun, and the cause of the ex-pression "ten gallon hat" was the · fact that often times a cowboy would ride into a stream stirrup deep and, while his horse drank, he would lean over and fill or clip up a hatful of water and drink it.
Chaps were created for the protection of the cow-boy's legs When riding after cattle at either a fast or slow gallup through brush and timber, a cow-boy's legs often-times were snagged on tree stumps, limbs, etc. These heavy leather chaps broke the force and saved him from jagging or cutting him-self. They also prevented brush from tearing the pants and helped protect and keep him warm rainy or snowy weather. Sometimes on a big outfit a rider who wasn't sure of himself or hadn't reached the top of the game would wet his chaps on the inside of each leg. This would help him with his grip and give him more confidence. Although the clothing worn by members of the cowboy trade was picturesque, it was distinctive. It was not worn for show nor did the style change from year to year just for convenience and comfort.
