Offering 100% full-tuition, merit-based scholarships, the Recanati-Kaplan Program for Excellence in the Arts opens doors for exceptional students in greater New York City to hone and develop their creative potential as artists, musicians and dancers.

Under the guidance of 92Y’s esteemed School of the Arts faculty, students are immersed in a broad range of advanced classes as well as personalized private instruction. Students demonstrating particular excellence in their field are eligible to receive end-of-the-year awards, which can be used towards college tuition.

At the core of the Recanati-Kaplan program is the belief that individualized instruction and mentoring accelerate learning, support technical accomplishment and stimulate creative potential. This is where the journey begins, putting students on a path to reach new goals, exceed expectations and fulfill their dreams.

Do you have a student who’s passionate?

Committed? Gifted?

Recanati-Kaplan scholars thrive.

We teach our students to dream BIG.

David Alvarez, Tony Award® winner for Billy Elliot, started his musical studies at 92Y as a beginner pianist in fall 2006. He showed such potential that he was awarded a full-tuition Recanati-Kaplan scholarship to study piano privately through 2012. David also became involved with dance and went on to perform in Billy Elliot the Musical on Broadway.

Benjamin Wenzelberg has been a Recanati-Kaplan scholar in music since 2008. In the six years he has spent as a participant in the program, Benjy has received a BMI award, an ASCAP award and the Atlanta Opera’s Golden Ticket, and been an invited soloist at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. In his words, “Without the R-K program I really wouldn’t be the musician and person I am today.”

Ten-year-old Oona Laurence, Recanati-Kaplan scholar in dance, made her Broadway debut as Roald Dahl’s Matilda in Matilda the Musical. Of being on Broadway, Oona says, “It’s like you are getting your story out to a bigger audience in a more professional way.” Does she get nervous? “Sometimes, but mostly an excited nervous that feels like butterflies.”

Audrey Zhang has been drawing continuously almost every day since she was two years old. She prefers using black ink pen to draw images from her mind, and almost every picture of hers is different. The winner of many art competitions, she was most recently named national champion for Google 4 Doodle in 2014.
