Greetings from UCSF Fresno Family Medicine! What an incredible year so far! This year’s Match brought some GREAT people to UCSF Fresno Family Medicine. Check inside this issue for our new additions to the program. Congratulations also to our new Chief Residents, Aman Gill and Raul Ayala. I’m already amazed at the energy and new ideas being proposed. Our PGY3 residents are starting to oxy- genate once again, as the ABFM cer- tification exam was moved up to April this year and most residents have now successfully put that hurdle behind them. As the academic year nears its end, I’m pleased to present anoth- er group of fine physicians who will be providing care to the much needed population of the Central Valley and beyond. Special thanks to Dr. Mortimer for his years of service as Department Chief. He has been a valuable colleague and I am glad to say will be remaining with us to pursue other interests within the program. Thanks Roger! See this issue for more details on our changing of the guard. Our residency graduation celebration will be at Fort Washington on June 8th. We’d love to see our alumni and other partners there! We are on FaceBook! Check it out online. UCSF Fresno Family & Community Medicine We are making a concerted effort to develop an active alumni group that can meet at national meetings, stay in touch with us and each other to keep involved in program events and help us better prepare residents for the real world of family medicine. Many in the Fresno Family Medicine community do not know thatour residency program began in 1972 at then Valley MedicalCenter (VMC). VMC was operated by Fresno County. Ron Smith,MD, a family physician who still attends noon lectures, was our firstprogram director. Initial funding and support for the programcame from the brand new California Area Health EducationCenter Program (AHEC). The AHEC was the first University ofCalifornia health professions program in the valley. John Blossom, third of the first family medicine graduates, heads the now State-

wide AHEC Program, which providesgrant support to 15 centers throughoutthe state. The local AHEC, hosted bythe Fresno Healthy Community AccessPartners, is currently providing fundingand support for the exploration of anew family medicine residency pro-gram based in a teaching health cen-ter in Fresno. This effort is being led byour own Dr. Lydia Herrera-Mata who isalso Associate Program Director for theStatewide AHEC.

Introducing FOCUS: the new UCSF Fresno Family andCommunity Medicine Scholarly Activites insert!

Be sure to check out the new insert to the newsletter. Focus: A Publication ofScholarly Activity highlights the new journal club and outside presentations madein the last quarter. The format of our journal club now has a resident take a clini-cal question, search for the best evidence-based answer, and summarize thefindings. Our first four residents to go through this process are represented here. The abstracts for the most recent presentations are all from the UCSF FCM JackRodnick Colloquium. We had a large group in attendance with 3 poster presen-tations and Dr. Sherriff’s talk based on a study completed with the help of UCSFLIFE medical student Alecia Greenlee.

UCSF Fresno Family and Community Medicineawarded Innovations Grant

The Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators Innovations Funding WorkingGroup awarded UCSF Fresno Family and Community Medicine nearly $30,000 tofurther Faculty Development. Dr. Ivan Gomez developed the proposal titled“Using a Dynamic Objective Structured Teaching Exercise (DOSTE) in aLongitudinal Model for Faculty Development.” This project will build on what thedepartment learned in the last HRSA training grant, using structured exercises withstandardized patients to teach residents about psychosocial issues. Funding is forthe next academic year. Open to all faculty in the School of Medicine, theseintramural grants serve as a catalyst for the development of curriculum thataddresses the constantly changing ways in which physicians practice medicine.

Happy Spring Everyone! We are pleasedto have matched 11 great interns. Andwith the new year approaching we arealso preparing to say goodbye to our cur-rent third years. The three years here havebeen an adventure and I cannot believeit is almost over. It is crazy to think that myfellow graduates and I are almost donewith our training. To think that roughly 11years ago most of us were finishing highschool and then starting college. It hasbeen a very long 11 years of work andstruggles to get to our dreams of beingdoctors, but it is finally here! All of ourpatience and dedication has finally paidoff and in a few months my fellow class-mates and I will enter the world as FamilyPractice Physicians. I would like to thankall of our families that have supported usthrough each of our journeys and all thefaculty of the UCSF Fresno Family andCommunity Medicine Program in facilitat-ing our growth as physicians. It has beena long road, but a fulfilling one.Graduation here we come!
