WELCOME BACK TO CINCINNATINPTC 2019 ANNUAL EDUCATION

MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION

On behalf of the NPTC Board of Directors, the NPTC Institute Board of Governors, the ConferencePlanning Committee, and the entire membership of NPTC, we are pleased to extend a personalwelcome, greetings, and thanks for attending NPTC 2019.

You are among some 1200 of the nation’s best private fleet professionals who are registered for this event.Over 160 of the industry’s toptier supplier/vendors have exhibit booths in our worldclass Exhibition andTrade Show Exhibit Hall which, as one of the largest associationsponsored events of exhibitors in thetrucking industry, is an enormous learning experience in itself and a great resource for fleets in helping shapetheir buying decisions.

Thanks to the leadership of some 45 Fleet and Allied/Supplier company member representatives serving onthe Conference Planning Committee, nearly three dozen workshops and breakfast roundtable discussionsare offered. Over the next three days, some 60 expert private fleet practitioners will serve as speakers andpanelists showcasing the latest, most innovative “best ideas” and stateofart business practices in theprivate fleet community.

A strong takeaway message from NPTC 2019 is that private fleets are a huge competitive advantage, particularly in the current market of booming demand for truck freight services, skyrocketing outside carrierrates, tight capacity, and extreme driver shortages. Conference presenters on numerous critical topics ofinterests will show while there never has been a better time to “sell” the justification of a private fleet, fleetmanagers must constantly “make the case” to upper management with current data documenting thecomparative cost and customer service advantages of the private fleet versus alternative outside serviceproviders.

Reward and recognition ceremonies highlight NPTC annual conferences and 2019 will be no exception.

At the KickOff Brunch on Sunday, April 14th, opening general session, NPTC will recognize ProfessionalLeadership award winners for the year following by the graduation ceremony of the CTP Class of 2019—morethan 85 new Certified Transportation Professionals. Driver Hall of Fame and Fleet Safety Award honorees willbe recognized at the luncheon ceremony held on Monday, April 15th.

NPTC 2019 is a great opportunity for networking. Our slogan, “You Must Be Present to Win” sumsup the essential value proposition of being at theconference in person and experiencing firsthandthe culture of mutual trust and confidence. Youwill meet hundreds of private fleet practitionerswho, like yourself, are on a careerlong journey ofcontinuous improvement for their companies andprofessional development for themselves.

Thanks for being here. We greatly appreciate yourparticipation. Best wishes for a most productiveand enjoyable experience.

The $100,000-a-year truck driver is coming to a fleetnear you. Although for the majority of truck drivers, pay remains well below competitive levels, In fact theBureau of Labor Statistics lists the median annualwage for truck drivers at just $41,000. That’s notenough to attract and retain the best drivers on themarket. In fact, fleets are considering hefty compensa-tion packages, innovative pay structures, incentives and bonuses, advanced career placement strategies and other non-traditionalassistance including strategies to cope with the Tax Cuts and JobsAct enacted in late 2017 that swept away the allowance for truckdrivers to take an income deduction for daily expenses on mealsand incidentals, aka the per diem deduction. Preparing for the Invasion of theMillennial WorkforceShelli Fridenstine, Corporate Director of Human Resources,Ross Environmental Services, Inc.

As we scour the market-place for new talent, weincreasingly face the multi-generational workforce. Many privatefleet managers complain about the relatively new challenge ofmanaging millennials, those workers born between 1982 and2004. These workers are typically more tech-savvy than previousgenerations, yet they are often perceived as markedly independ-ent and stubborn. Whether in the cab or in the office, how canwe work with this latest generation to support their goals, lever-age their strengths and create excellence in the private fleet?
